The authors present a review of 431 children biopsied and studied with the following histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques: 1) acetylcholinesterase activity; 2) alphanaphthylesterase activity; 3) S-100 protein immunohistochemical technique; 4) glyoxylic acid method. Two hundred forty-eight patients of our series presented different forms of dysganglionosis, 12 of them (4.8%) presenting neuronal intestinal dysplasia type B. Lung histology and immune responses were followed during a six month period of Thermoactinomyces vulgaris antigen respiratory sensitization of C57BL/6J mice. Histologically, the mice developed a picture resembling the subacute stage of human farmer's lung. Alternaria infectoria causes opportunistic human infections and is a source of allergens leading to respiratory allergies. In this work, we prepared cell wall nanoparticles (CWNPs) as a novel approach to study macrophage immunomodulation by fungal hyphal cell walls. A. infectoria was grown in the presence of caspofungin, an inhibitor of β(1,3)-glucan synthesis; nikkomycin Z, an inhibitor of chitin synthases; and pyroquilon, an inhibitor of dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN)-melanin synthesis. Loss of muscle proteins increases the morbidity and mortality of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and there are no reliable preventive treatments. We uncovered a STAT3/CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein-δ to myostatin signaling pathway that activates muscle protein degradation in mice with CKD or cancer; we also identified a small-molecule inhibitor of STAT3 (TTI-101) that blocks this pathway. To evaluate TTI-101 as a treatment for CKD-induced cachexia, we measured TTI-101 pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in control and CKD rats that were orally administered TTI-101or its diluent.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has an anti-inflammatory action in acute pancreatitis (AP). However, its mechanism of action and natural compounds/drugs to induce HO-1 in pancreas are not well understood. Cell infiltrates in sections of paraffin-embedded tissue of 36 human periapical inflammatory lesions (15 granulomas and 21 cysts) were examined by staining for acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE). Thirty-four of the lesions showed ANAE reactive T lymphocytes, plasma cells and cells of the monocyte/macrophage cell line. The present study sought to delineate the phenotypic heterogeneity of the human T-cell malignancies. Twenty T-cell neoplasms were investigated for reactivity with the OKT hybridoma monoclonal antibodies and expression of acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE), beta-glucuronidase (BG), and acid phosphatase (AP) activity. Myelosarcoma (granulocytic sarcoma) is a rare tumor seen in patients with known hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes and myeloproliferative disorders, as well as in non-leukemic patients. Invasive fungal infections (IFI) due to species in Aspergillus section Fumigati (ASF), including the Aspergillus viridinutans species complex (AVSC), are increasingly reported in humans and cats. The risk of exposure to these medically important fungi in Australia is unknown.
