Bilateral, independent juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: case report.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign, vascular tumour that primarily occurs in adolescent males. Despite its benign nature, aggressive growth patterns can cause potential life-threatening complications. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is normally unilateral, originating from the sphenopalatine artery, but bilateral symptoms can occur if a large tumour extends to the contralateral side of the nasopharynx. This paper presents the first reported case of true bilateral extensive juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma involving clinically challenging pre-surgical planning

Considering the Ectopic Pituitary Gland in Evaluation of the Nasopharyngeal Mass.

IMPORTANCE: Extracranial pituitary ectopia is an uncommon finding characterized by all or a portion of the pituitary gland situated in an aberrant location. Often these lesions come to clinical attention only once they begin to function abnormally or increase in size significantly. OBSERVATIONS: We describe an incidentally noted, asymptomatic pedunculated nasopharyngeal lesion in a 13-month-old girl that may be an extracranial pituitary gland. Consideration of this rare anomaly cautioned against performing a biopsy and may have prevented inadvertent removal of functional pituitary tissue. We

Discovery of invasion routes for nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

The aim of this study is to discover regional invasion routes for nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (NACC) through analyses of the magnetic resonance (MR) images and comparison with keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (KSCC). Both MR results and clinical records were retrospectively reviewed for 18 patients with NACC and 182 patients with KSCC. The metastasis routes of NACC were identified by analysis of MR images of patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There were significant differences in skull base invasion and cavernous sinus invasion (p = 0.020 and 0.028, respec

Is palatal vault height a determinant for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A hypothesis?

Although environmental and genetic factors are known for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the present study is an attempt to provide a hypothesis behind the development of NPC with regards to the anatomical factor, the hypothesis being that patients with a deeper palatal vault tend to have a higher risk of developing nasopharyngeal cancers. The objective of this study was to find out the palatal vault height in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and compare it with the palatal vault height in patients with oral carcinomas. The heights of the palatal vault of 20 consecutive patients with nasophary

Inner ear deficits in irradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma survivors.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Despite the advancement of concurrent chemoradiotherapy, inner ear symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, or vertigo/dizziness are still experienced in irradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) survivors. This study utilized an inner ear test battery to assess the causes and sequence of inner ear deficits in irradiated NPC survivors with a mean interval of 10 years after radiotherapy. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Thirty-six irradiated NPC survivors were enrolled. Otoscopy and an inner ear test battery comprising audiometry were performed, as well as oc

Epstein-Barr virus-targeted therapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Despite successful primary treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the incidence of distant metastasis remains 25-34 %. Treatment options are limited, and survival is poor. Intratumoural Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was used as treatment target. In NPC, EBV is present in a latent state, expressing only few non-immunogenic viral products. Gemcitabine and valproic acid can trigger EBV to the lytic state, wherein viral kinases are expressed, making EBV-positive tumour cells susceptible for antiviral therapy with, i.e. valganciclovir, and inducing an EBV-specific immune response. Unusual coexistence of extramedullary plasmacytoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma in nasopharynx.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an EBV-associated malignant tumor of nasopharynx. As extremely rare condition, the second primary cancer of nasopharynx can occur in NPC patients synchronously or subsequently. Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare tumor and commonly originates in the head and neck region. However, there is no report to describe a collision tumor of NPC and EMP occurring in the same nasopharyngeal mass. We report here an unusual case of synchronous coexistence of NPC and EMP occurring in the nasopharynx of an old male patient. A 63-year-old male patient presented with a

Galectin-1 overexpression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: effect on survival.

CONCLUSIONS: Galectin-1 overexpression is significantly correlated with the survival rate of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Immunohistochemical analysis of galectin-1 expression might be useful for identifying patients with a high risk of distant metastasis and for prompting timely adjuvant systemic therapy for patients with aggressive NPC. OBJECTIVES: We examined the effect of galectin-1 on the survival rate of patients with NPC. METHODS: A total of 124 patients diagnosed between 1998 and 2002 with NPC without distant metastasis were enrolled in this single-center historical

Large nasopharyngeal inverted papilloma presenting with rustling tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common symptom caused by numerous diseases. The etiology is unknown in most cases; however, nasopharyngeal lesions may cause a certain tinnitus. We herein report a case of nasopharyngeal inverted papilloma which presents with rustling tinnitus as the sole initial symptom. The tympanic membrane was intact, and results of hearing test and impedance audiometry were normal. However, sonotubometry showed a complete blockage of the Eustachian tube. A large tumor was found that originated from the choana and occupied the nasopharynx which caused a rustling sound when she swallowed or sp

Comparison of sputum and nasopharyngeal swabs for detection of respiratory viruses.

Diagnostic tests for respiratory viral infections use traditionally either nasopharyngeal washes or swabs. Sputum is representative of the lower respiratory tract but is used rarely for viral testing. The aim of this study was to compare the detection rates of respiratory viruses from nasopharyngeal swabs and sputum using a multiplex real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Adults who were admitted or presented to the clinics of Gil Medical Center with acute respiratory symptoms were recruited from 1 November 2012 to 31 March 2013. Paired specimens of nasopharyngeal

TRPM7 promotes the metastatic process in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Our study observed the relationship between transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) expression and the metastatic process of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We found that TRPM7 was overexpressed in 102 out of 206 (49.5%) human NPC cases and was significantly associated with clinical stage and lymphatic and distant metastasis. The results suggested that TRPM7 promotes NPC cell migration and invasion in vitro. Further, TRPM7 was correlated with poor clinical outcome and was an independent predictor for 5-year overall survival rate (HR, 1.832; 95% CI, 1.237-4.146 [P = 0.041]). In conclu

Pneumococci in biofilms are non-invasive: implications on nasopharyngeal colonization.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the human nasopharynx asymptomatically. Invasive pneumococcal disease develops following bacterial aspiration into the lungs. Pneumococci within the nasopharynx exist as biofilms, a growth phenotype characterized by surface attachment, encasement within an extracellular matrix, and antimicrobial resistance. Experimental evidence indicates that biofilm pneumococci are attenuated vs. their planktonic counterpart. Biofilm pneumococci failed to cause invasive disease in experimentally challenged mice and in vit

Profiling plasma microRNA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma with deep sequencing.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to establish a plasma microRNA profile by use of next-generation sequencing that could aid in assessment of patient prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: Two panels of NPC patients and healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for this study. We used deep sequencing to screen plasma microRNAs. Differentially expressed microRNAs were verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis with the log-rank test was used to compare overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) between groups. RESULTS: Twenty-t

Identification of a novel methylated gene in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: TTC40.

To further explore the epigenetic changes in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), methylation-sensitive arbitrarily primed PCR was performed on NPC biopsies and nontumor nasopharyngeal samples. We have shown mainly two DNA fragments that appeared to be differentially methylated in NPCs versus nontumors. The first, defined as hypermethylated, corresponds to a CpG island at the 5'-end of the tetratricopeptide repeat domain 40 (TTC40) gene, whereas the second, defined as hypo-methylated, is located on repetitive sequences at chromosomes 16p11.1 and 13.1. Thereafter, the epigenetic alteration on the 5'

Hotspot mutations in common oncogenes are infrequent in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Oncogene mutations contribute to carcinogenesis and can provide potential therapeutic targets for clinical anticancer management. However, oncogene mutation patterns in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have yet to be fully elucidated. To gain insight into mutation patterns in NPC, a high-throughput OncoCarta panel assay was used to determine 238 hotspot mutations across 19 common oncogenes in 8 NPC cell lines and 160 NPC patient samples from southern China. Statistical analyses were further conducted to identify associations between oncogene mutations and selected clinicopathological characteris
