Retrospective analysis of self-reporting pain scores and pain management during head and neck IMRT radiotherapy: A single institution experience.

AIMS: Head and neck carcinomas are relatively rare in the United Kingdom with an estimated 9000 cases diagnosed annually. However, pain associated with disease and treatment side effects such as oral mucositis present a major issue for therapy radiographers in providing effective care and maintaining radiotherapy treatment compliance, all factors that can compromise patient outcome if not managed appropriately. METHOD: This retrospective analysis of self-reporting pain scores collected during a course of radiotherapy aims to assess the perceived pain intensity scores in 30 patients. Data was

Acupuncture at Houxi (SI 3) acupoint for acute neck pain caused by stiff neck: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The use of acupuncture has been suggested for the treatment of acute neck pain caused by stiff neck in China. However, current evidence is insufficient to draw any conclusions about its efficacy. Therefore this pilot study was designed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture at the Houxi (SI3) acupoint for treatment of acute neck pain. METHODS/ANALYSIS: This pilot study will be a two-parallel-group, assessor-blinded, randomised controlled trial. Thirty-six stiff neck participants with acute neck pain will be recruited and randomly divided into two groups in a 1:1…

Cost-effectiveness analysis of adding dry needling to physical therapy for chronic neck pain in upper trapezius myofascial pain syndrome.

This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of adding dry needling (DN) to conventional physical therapy for chronic neck pain using a Markov model. Health outcomes were measured in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and treatment costs and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated. Combination therapy showed a higher recovery rate than standard care (70% vs. 50%) and generated higher QALY estimates (7.72 vs. 8.34), with a small additional cost (ICER: 3.48 USD/QALY). Monte Carlo simulations and sensitivity analyses supported the overall cost-effectiveness signal across te…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Head and Neck Emergencies, a Symptom-Based Review, Part 2: Ear Pain, Face Pain, and Fever.

The use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the emergency department continues to increase. Although computed tomography is the first-line imaging modality for most head and neck emergencies, MR is superior in some situations and imparts no ionizing radiation. This article provides a symptom-based approach to nontraumatic head and neck pathologic conditions most relevant to emergency head and neck MR imaging, emphasizing relevant anatomy, "do not miss" findings affecting clinical management, and features that may aid differentiation from potential mimics. Essential MR sequences and strategie

Suzetrigine for Postoperative Pain in Head and Neck Free Flap or Transoral Robotic Surgery.

IMPORTANCE: Postoperative pain after head and neck surgery frequently necessitates opioid analgesia despite multimodal pain regimens. Suzetrigine, a selective NaV1.8 inhibitor that was recently approved in the US for acute postoperative pain, may reduce postoperative opioid requirements. However, the current surgical literature regarding suzetrigine use after head and neck surgery is limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of adjunctive suzetrigine use with postoperative opioid consumption after head and neck free flap reconstruction and transoral robotic surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, AN

A rare case of spontaneous carotid sheath abscess presenting as a painful neck mass.

Infections of the carotid arteries and sheath without any underlying etiology are extremely uncommon. In this article, we report the successful open repair of a right carotid sheath abscess in a 71-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities. The repair consisted of excision of the affected carotid segment and reconstruction by interposition of a reversed great saphenous vein graft. Postoperative Doppler ultrasound examination showed patent right carotid artery, and the patient demonstrated no recurrence postoperatively. This case suggests that, although rare, spontaneous carotid sheath remains
