Development of Angiosarcoma in a Saphenous Vein Graft after Femoral to Above-Knee Popliteal Artery Bypass.

Angiosarcoma is an exceedingly rare and aggressive neoplasm. Owing to early metastasis even in low-grade tumors, it is associated with poor survival. We report a late development of an angiosarcoma in a saphenous vein graft after a femoral artery to above-knee popliteal artery bypass performed for disabling claudication. Chronic inflammation, lymphatic disruption, and thrombosis of the graft may have contributed to the malignant transformation, similar to cases described as occurring after arteriovenous fistulae creation. This case illustrates that angiosarcoma may be a rare, late complication

Cutaneous Metastases from Salivary Duct Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland.

Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive malignant neoplasm that frequently metastasises to other organs, but cutaneous metastasis is uncommon. There are only 6 cases reported in the literature with metastases to the skin and in all cases the tumour originates from the parotid gland. We present a case of skin metastases from the submandibular gland that was mistaken for basal cell carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of salivary duct carcinoma arising from the submandibular gland with cutaneous metastases.

Urachal signet ring cell carcinoma.

Urachal adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm associated with poor prognosis. We report a case of urachal signet ring cell carcinoma in a 65-year-old man. He was admitted with a chief complaint of microscopic hematuria. Cystoscopic examination and transurethral biopsy showed an urachal tumor. After undergoing radical cystectomy and intravenous chemotherapy, the patient developed bilateral hydronephroses as a result of bilateral ureteral metastases and bowel obstraction because of the Para-aortic lymphnode metastasis. He has been alive for 5 years after three courses of chemotherapy and a bypass op

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx-hypopharynx. A case report and review of the literature].

Laryngeal or hypopharyngeal localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare due to the poor distribution of the accesory salivary glands in this area. We report one case of such neoplasm on that area, with its diagnosis confirmed histologically. The required a total laryngectomy with later reoperations because of hemorrhage and pharyngeal fistula. One year after the surgery and in spite of postoperative radiotherapy multiple pulmonary metastasis were detected causing the death of the patient. We review the literature of this tumor whose prognosis is much worse than epidermoid or scamous carci

[Ductal carcinoma of the parotid gland with the clinical picture of obstructive sialadenitis].

Salivary duct carcinoma is a highly malignant tumor. Pain, facial nerve palsy, perineural and lymphatic invasion are common findings, as well as an extensive cervical lymph node involvement and distant metastasis. However, occasionally, as in the case presented, the clinical features of this tumor may resemble obstructive sialadenitis and thus cause a delay in appropriate treatment. Although salivary duct carcinoma exhibits an unpredictable clinical course and a poor overall prognosis, total parotidectomy with neck dissection and adjunctive radiation therapy appear to be appropriate for local

Maxillary sinus cancer and metastatic compression of the cauda equina: report of two cases.

Maxillary sinus cancer with metastasis outside of the head and neck is a relatively rare occurrence. We describe two cases of carcinoma of the maxillary sinus that metastasized to the spine and compressed the cauda equina. In the first case, the neurological complication happened synchronously with the primary malignant neoplasm, while in the second instance, cauda equina compression occurred several months later. The treatment of metastatic compression of the cauda equina consisted mainly of radiotherapy, with palliation being achieved in one patient. Survival was expectedly short (3 months)

Phycomycosis in a dog.

Chronic vomiting in a 2-year-old dog was suspected to be due to a neoplasm of the stomach wall. During exploratory laparotomy, a lymph node from the pyloric area was examined microscopically. Inasmuch as neoplastic cells or evidence of metastasis were not found, all visibly involved tissue was removed surgically. A diagnosis of phycomycosis was then established by histologic evaluation of the tissue removed. It was concluded that diagnosis of this disease is important inasmuch as it may be treated successfully, in contrast to the situation with malignant neoplastic conditions, which it grossly

Orbital medulloepitheliomas -- with extensive local invasion and metastasis: a series of three cases with review of literature.

Intraocular medulloepithelioma is a rare embryonal neoplasm which usually presents in childhood as a ciliary body mass. This tumor is usually confined to the orbit and rarely tends to be locally aggressive and metastatic. We describe three rare cases of metastatic malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma. The patients were males aged 7, 16 and 25 years with right eye involvement in all the cases. All patients had local recurrence (multiple in two) and metastasis to the intraparotid and cervical lymph nodes. Distinction from round cell tumors and primary salivary gland neoplasms occurring in the p

Malignant mixed müllerian tumor of the fallopian tube coincident with a primary serous carcinoma of the ovary. Case report.

Malignant mixed müllerian tumors are very rare neoplasms of the fallopian tube, and treatment is not well defined. A case of malignant mixed müllerian tumor of the tube concomitant with a primary serous carcinoma of the ovary is reported. It was unclear if there were two distinct neoplasms in the same patient, or if it was a single tumor with a sarcomatous fallopian conversion of the serous component, as described for some recurrent ovarian carcinomas. Chemotherapy for ovarian carcinoma with intraperitoneal metastasis was performed, with about a three-year interval-free period of disease, as c

Ectopic pleural thymoma with T-cell lymphocytosis and bone metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic complexities that arise in radiographic distinction between ectopic pleural thymoma and other thoracic neoplasms are substantial, with instances of co-occurring T-cell lymphocytosis and osseous metastasis being exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and chest pain. Upon imaging examination, she was found to have diffuse and nodular pleural thickening on the left side, collapse of the left lung and a compression in the second thoracic vertebrae. All lesions showed significant 18F-FDG uptake on 18F-FDG PET/CT

Significance of Furin Expression in Thyroid Neoplastic Transformation.

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2), Transmembrane Serine Protease 2 (TMPRSS2), and Furin were known to be key players in the SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the thyroid gland was revealed to be one of the relevant targets of the virus. Regardless of the viral infection, the expression of these molecules in the thyroid gland and their putative role in the neoplastic transformation of the thyrocytes has not been thoroughly explored. In this work, we aimed to characterize the mRNA and protein expression pattern of ACE2, TMPRSS2, and Furin in a series of patients with thyroid lesions. Our main resul

Breast Metastasis From Cutaneous Melanoma: Beyond the Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma.

Breast metastases of extramammary origin are an extremely rare entity. Solid organ metastases to the breast include malignant melanoma, epithelial carcinoma (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the lung and gastrointestinal tract), and sarcoma. A breast neoplasm can be caused by a primary tumor, in-transit metastasis, breast metastasis, and skin metastasis. A 42-year-old female patient presented with a hyperpigmented lesion on the first finger of her left hand. An incisional biopsy was carried out, reporting pigmented epithelioid melanoma. Amputation of the finger was performed, as w

Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-7 is an unfavorable prognostic factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC) is a highly malignant neoplasm, but the prognostic factors of IHCC are not yet fully understood. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known to be related to tumor viability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of resected IHCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1996 to 2006, we surgically treated 35 patients with IHCC. Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics, including expression of MMPs, vascular endothelial growth factor, and epider

[Unusual axillary apocrine carcinoma of the skin: histological diagnostic difficulties].

BACKGROUND: Apocrine carcinoma of the skin (ACS) is a rare adnexal neoplasm presenting as an indurated slow-growing dermal or subcutaneous plaque that often occurs in the axilla. Histological distinction between ACS and cutaneous metastases of breast carcinoma may be difficult. OBSERVATION: A 64-year-old man presented with a slowly growing left axillary mass, which he had noticed for 2 years, without any other functional or clinical symptoms. Histological examination of the skin biopsy showed dermal invasion with atypical cells in an "Indian file" pattern. The pattern of the tumour and immuno

Non-small cell lung cancer initially presenting with intracardiac metastasis.

Intracardiac metastasis as the initial presentation of malignant neoplasm is very rare. We report here on a 64-year-old man with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) initially presenting with intracardiac metastasis which was identified with 18-F fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET). The patient was admitted with complaints of exertional dyspnea and vague chest discomfort that had developed a few weeks ago. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed a heart mass attached to its akinetic wall in the right ventricular chamber. CT and MRI demonstrated a large tumor involving the

Breast Metastasis From Cervical Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Mimicking Primary Breast Cancer.

We describe a case of breast metastasis originating from a small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNEC) of the uterine cervix, an uncommon presentation that can be difficult to distinguish from a primary breast malignancy. We report a 29-year-old woman treated three years earlier for FIGO stage IB2 cervical SCNEC with chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, who presented with a 1.5-cm mass in the left breast. Imaging suggested a primary breast malignancy, but her oncologic history raised concern for metastasis. Core-needle biopsy showed a high-grade small-cell neoplasm expressing synaptophysin

Periarticular histiocytic sarcoma with heart metastasis in a cat.

A 4-year-old intact female domestic short-haired cat was referred for recommendations about adjuvant medical treatment 1 month after left forelimb amputation due to periarticular histiocytic sarcoma (HS). At presentation, physical abnormalities were limited to enlarged ipsilateral superficial cervical and axillary lymph nodes. Routine blood analysis, abdominal ultrasound, and thoracic radiology were unremarkable. The cat initially received lomustine without any adverse events. Four weeks later, the cat developed severe acute respiratory distress. Results of thoracic radiographs and transthorac

Spontaneous Splenic Rupture due to Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer.

Introduction. Nontraumatic splenic rupture is a rare event. On the other hand, splenic metastasis is also rare and usually found in the context of disseminated disease. Spontaneous splenic rupture caused by a metastatic deposit has been reported only as case reports. To the best of our knowledge, pancreatic cancer being the primary site has been reported in only a handful of cases. Case Presentation. A case of spontaneous splenic rupture in a 68-year-old male presenting with acute onset left shoulder pain, caused by metastatic pancreatic cancer to the spleen, is presented herein. During the in

Transcriptomic identification of miR-205 target genes potentially involved in metastasis and survival of cutaneous malignant melanoma.

Cutaneous melanoma is an aggressive neoplasm and is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Several miRNAs are involved in melanoma tumor progression. One of them is miR-205, the loss of which contributes to the development of melanoma metastasis. We evaluated whole-genome mRNA expression profiling associated with different miR-205 expression levels in melanoma cells. Differential expression analysis identified 243 differentially expressed transcripts including inositol polyphosphate 5'-phosphatase-like protein-1 (INPPL1) and BTB/POZ Domain-Containing Protein 3 (BTBD3). Surgical Treatment of Brain Metastasis of Extramammary Paget's Disease: A Case Report.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare form of neoplasm. Metastasis of EMPD to locations other than lymph nodes and intra-epithelial regions is rare; there are a limited number of case reports of metastases to the liver, lung, bone, and brain. We present a rare case of EMPD that metastasized to the brain and was treated with surgical resection. A 66-year-old man presented with a small palpable mass in the scrotum. After 5 years of observation, he was diagnosed with EMPD that metastasized to the lymph nodes and lung. Tumor resection and postoperative chemotherapy were performed. Six mont
