The peritoneum is a common site of dissemination in patients with colorectal cancer. In order to identify high-risk patients and improve therapeutic strategies, a better understanding of the peritoneal dissemination process and the reasons behind the high heterogeneity that is observed between patients is required. Twenty-five neonatal beagles were used for this study. Gliosarcoma was injected into the cerebral hemisphere of 7 neonatal beagles (Group I). These animals were then treated by boron neutron capture therapy. The response of the tumor to therapy was evaluated by serial CT scans and 3 times magnification of cerebral angiography. When Stage I and II cancers of the breast and their axillary lymph nodes were grown in the same tissue culture, a phenomenon of lymphocytic migration from the nodal explants to the tumor explants was observed. The possibility that anticoagulation with warfarin might inhibit the development of spontaneous metastases from intestinal carcinomas induced by azoxymethane (AOM) was tested in Sprague-Dawley rats with and without 60% distal small-bowel resection (DSBR). Trichosanthin is an abortifacient plant protein purified from the Chinese medicinal herb Tian-hua-fen, obtained from root tubers of Trichosanthes kirilowii (Cucurbitaceae).
