Paraneoplastic syndromes with soft-tissue sarcoma: a report of two unusual cases.

Paraneoplastic syndromes secondary to mesodermal tumors are relatively uncommon. In this report, we describe two unusual cases associated with soft-tissue sarcoma: a 69-year-old male who had a normochromic anemia, without apparent etiology, that resolved promptly after surgical resection of the primary tumor; and a 22-year-old female with hypercalcemia without evidence of bony destruction.

Serial growth of human malignant fibrous histiocytoma xenografts in immunodeficient mice.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is on of the most common soft tissue sarcomas of adulthood, the only treatment for which involves surgical resection of the extremities and retroperitoneum, while no standard postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy has been established. We report herein on the establishment of a serially transplantable MFH strain in immunodeficient mice. An intraperitoneal tumor was resected from a patient with multiple recurrent MFH, inoculated into the subcutaneous tissue of mice with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), and established as a serially transplantable MFH st

Malignant solitary fibrous tumor arising in the right buttock associated with metastatic parietal pleural and intrapulmonary tumors in addition to pleural effusion.

A malignant solitary fibrous tumor arising in the right buttock associated with metastatic parietal pleural and intrapulmonary tumors and pleural effusion was found in a 59-year-old man. A chest computed tomogram revealed three tumors attached to the parietal pleura with rib destruction, and a tumor in the left lower lung field. Histologically, the tumors of the buttock and parietal pleura were characterized by proliferation of bundles of spindle-shaped or oval cells separated by wavy hyalinized collagen tissue with no expression of cytokeratin, S-100 protein, muscle actin or epithelial membra

Pedunculated solitary fibrous tumours arising from the pleura.

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is one of the rare tumours which arise from visceral pleura. Klemperer and Rabin first described SFT as a distinct clinical entity among primary pleural tumoUrs in 1931. Approximately 820 cases have been reported in literature to date. The management of patients with SFT is complete resection of the tumour and follow up of the patient to detect any possible late recurrence. In the present paper, we report two cases of pedunculated solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura that appeared as a wandering chest nodule to which surgical resection undertaken at our hospital

Paratesticular fibrous hamartoma in an infant.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy is a rare benign tumour with local infiltration. The lesion is usually found in the upper torso and rarely occurs in the genital region. Diagnosis before surgery is rare, and complete excision is essential to prevent recurrence. We present a case in which fibrous hamartoma of infancy involving the spermatic cord was found. A pre-operative clinical diagnosis could not be made. On inguinal exploration, the tumour could not be dissected away from the testicular vessels, which necessitated an orchidectomy for complete removal. The case is presented due to its rarity an

One-bone forearm reconstruction using vascularized fibular graft for massive forearm soft-tissue and bone defect: case report.

The authors report a case of recurrent malignant fibrous histiocytoma with extensive bone- and soft-tissue involvement, successfully treated with one-bone forearm reconstruction using a vascularized fibular graft and multiple tendon transfer. Twenty-four months after surgery, elbow and hand functions were maintained, and the patient had no disturbance of hand function in daily activity, although rotation of the forearm was sacrificed. No local recurrence or metastasis was noted. The procedure is a useful reconstructive option for complex tissue defects following wide excision of sarcoma of the

Diagnosis of breast cancer using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: Comparison of a Monte Carlo versus partial least squares analysis based feature extraction technique.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We explored the use of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrum for the diagnosis of breast cancer. A physical model (Monte Carlo inverse model) and an empirical model (partial least squares analysis) based approach, were compared for extracting diagnostic features from the diffuse reflectance spectra. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: The physical model and the empirical model were employed to extract features from diffuse reflectance spectra measured from freshly excised breast tissues. A subset of extracted features obtained using each met

[Hereditary p53 mutation in a patient with multiple tumors: significance for genetic counseling].

We describe molecular genetic findings in a patient who initially presented with an intermediate teratoma of the testis and who many years later presented with an oligodendro-astrocytoma. In addition he developed a malignant histiocytoma over the scapula, an adenocarcinoma of the stomach and a late stage adenoma of the sigmoid colon. Due to the development of several neoplasms the possibility of either ataxia telangiectasia or Li-Fraumeni syndrome was considered in differential diagnosis. A molecular genetic investigation revealed that both he and his brother carried a germline p53 tumor suppr

Variability of CD34 Expression in Sinonasal Glomangiopericytoma: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Sinonasal glomangiopericytoma (GPC) is an uncommon primary sinonasal neoplasm showing a perivascular myoid differentiation. Originally perceived as an intranasal counterpart to soft tissue hemangiopericytomas, initial immunohistochemical reports showed mostly negative to focal weak reactivity for CD34 as useful in separating GPC (almost always benign) from morphologic mimics, mainly solitary fibrous tumor (potentially aggressive). In anecdotally encountering cases of GPC with CD34 reactivity beyond the expected weak/negative immunoprofile, we sought to formally evaluate CD34 staining in 10 cas

McCune-Albright syndrome.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is classically defined by the clinical triad of fibrous dysplasia of bone (FD), café-au-lait skin spots, and precocious puberty (PP). It is a rare disease with estimated prevalence between 1/100,000 and 1/1,000,000. FD can involve a single or multiple skeletal sites and presents with a limp and/or pain, and, occasionally, a pathologic fracture. Scoliosis is common and may be progressive. In addition to PP (vaginal bleeding or spotting and development of breast tissue in girls, testicular and penile enlargement and precocious sexual behavior in boys), other hyperf

[Complicated urachal cyst: a difficult differential diagnosis].

Embryologically, the allantois connects the urogenital sinus with the navel. Normally, the allantois is oblitered before the birth and is represented by a fibrous cord, called urachus, extending from the dome of the bladder to the navel. Urachal formation is directly related to bladder descent. Incomplete obliteration sometimes occurs. Disease rarely occurs in urachus, but adenocarcinoma is the most fearful and rare, and it represents the 0.01% of the whole adult carcinoma, the 0.17-0.34% of the whole bladder malignancy, and the 20-30% of the bladder adenocarcinoma. Yet urachus may be seat of

A giant mesenteric fibromatosis involving the muscular layer of the colon wall: A case report.

RATIONALE: Mesenteric fibromatosis (MF) is a rare tumor whose biological behavior is intermediate between benign fibrous neoplasms and fibrosarcomas, and the characteristic of these tumors are local aggressive lesions which is prone to local recurrence but non-metastasizing. The common symptom is abdominal distention or painless mass. We report a case of giant MF in abdominal cavity with abdominal distention as the main symptom. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 26-year-old male presented with 2-month history of abdominal distention, lack of appetite, and symptoms grew progressively more debilitating with

EWSR1 Fusions With CREB Family Transcription Factors Define a Novel Myxoid Mesenchymal Tumor With Predilection for Intracranial Location.

Recurrent gene fusions involving EWSR1 with members of the cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) family (ATF1 and CREB1) have been reported in a diverse group of tumors including angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH), soft tissue and gastrointestinal clear cell sarcoma, primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma, and hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of salivary gland. We have recently encountered a group of 5 myxoid mesenchymal tumors positive for EWSR1 fusions with one of the CREB family member (ATF1, CREB1, and CREM), with histologic features distinct from any of the previously described patho

Cutaneous soft tissue sarcoma incidence patterns in the U.S. : an analysis of 12,114 cases.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous soft tissue sarcomas (CSTS) are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms. To the authors' knowledge, no prior large, population-based study has focused on CSTS. METHODS: Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program incidence and relative survival rates of CSTS were analyzed according to race, sex, and histologic type using the 2002 criteria of the World Health Organization classification. RESULTS: Among residents of the 13 SEER registries, 12,114 CSTS were diagnosed from 1992 through 2004. Overall age-adjusted CSTS incidence rates were highest among

Detection of SS18-SSX fusion transcripts in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded neoplasms: analysis of conventional RT-PCR, qRT-PCR and dual color FISH as diagnostic tools for synovial sarcoma.

Synovial Sarcoma consistently harbors t(X;18) resulting in SS18-SSX1, SS18-SSX2 and rarely SS18-SSX4 fusion transcripts. Of 328 cases included in our study, synovial sarcoma was either the primary diagnosis or was very high in the differential diagnosis in 134 cases: of these, amplifiable cDNA was obtained from 131. SS18-SSX fusion products were found in 126 (96%) cases (74 SS18-SSX1, 52 SS18-SSX2), using quantitative and 120 by conventional reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). One hundred and one cases in a tissue microarray, analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization

Pleural fat-forming variant of solitary fibrous tumor.

The fat-forming variant of solitary fibrous tumor is rare. It occurs predominantly in the deep soft tissues of the retroperitoneum and thigh. We describe a case of fat-forming solitary fibrous tumor arising from the pleura, which was successfully treated using a video-assisted thoracoscopic approach. The patient remained free of recurrence 2 years after surgery and continues to be under long-term follow-up.
