Light and electron microscopic study of crocodile islets of Langerhans.

The tissue of the islets of Langerhans was studied in Alligator mississippiensis and Caiman niger. The distribution of the insular tissue in the pancreas was described from the picture in the light microscope, together with the incidence of characteristic islets, which frequently surround the duct tress, and of scattered insular cells. Five types of endocrine cells, distinguishable by their staining properties and typical electron microscopic image, were described in the insular tissue. In addition to A-, B- and D-cells, others which very probably correspond to EC- and PP-cells are described.

A nerve distraction model in the rat.

Segmental loss of a peripheral nerve has been a challenging reconstructive problem. Management of the nerve gap has been accomplished classically with nerve grafting. However, autogenous nerve grafts are not always available for bridging large nerve gaps, and clinical results of large nerve cable grafts have been disappointing. Newer techniques concentrate on nerve lengthening with different methods. Tissue expansion of peripheral nerves has been producing promising results. Since the introduction of the Ilizarov external fixator, much attention has turned to limb-lengthening techniques and st

Conservative Safety Assessment of a Nitinol Microhook Coaptation Device on Intact Nerve.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Nerve Tape is a novel nerve coaptation device that eliminates the technical challenges of microsuturing. The device incorporates tissue-engaging Nitinol microhooks within a flexible backing of decellularized porcine small intestine submucosa (SIS). Preclinical nerve injury models have demonstrated device safety and effective promotion of regeneration and recovery. Here, we further assess the impact of the device's components on nerve tissue and function, using a highly conservative model in which the device is applied to intact nerves. METHODS: Nerve Tape, sutures, or SIS w…

Sensitization induces hypersensitivity in trigeminal nerve.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the chronic neuropathic pains. The aetiology remains unclear. Chronic inflammation is proposed playing a role in the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia. This study aims to assess the role of allergic inflammation in the pathological status of trigeminal neuralgia. METHODS: Allergic inflammation was induced in the infraorbital skin of rats. The expression of 5-HT receptor 3 (R3) in the trigeminal nerve and mastocytosis in the local tissue were observed by immunohistochemistry. The hyperalgesia status of the trigeminal nerve was determined b

Improving Outcomes in Immediate and Delayed Nerve Grafting of Peripheral Nerve Gaps Using Light-Activated Sealing of Neurorrhaphy Sites with Human Amnion Wraps.

BACKGROUND: Photochemical tissue bonding uses visible light to create sutureless, watertight bonds between two apposed tissue surfaces stained with photoactive dye. When applied to nerve grafting, photochemical tissue bonding can result in superior outcomes compared with suture fixation. Our previous success has focused on immediate repair. It was the aim of this study to assess the efficacy of photochemical tissue bonding when performed following a clinically relevant delay. METHODS: Forty male Lewis rats had 15-mm left sciatic nerve gaps repaired with reversed isografts immediately (n = 20)

4D Printed Programmable Shape-Morphing Hydrogels as Intraoperative Self-Folding Nerve Conduits for Sutureless Neurorrhaphy.

There are only a few reports of implantable 4D printed biomaterials, most of which exhibit slow deformations rendering them unsuitable for in situ surgical deployment. In this study, a hydrogel system is engineered with defined swelling behaviors, which demonstrated excellent printability in extrusion-based 3D printing and programmed shape deformations post-printing. Shape deformations of the spatially patterned hydrogels with defined infill angles are computationally predicted for a variety of 3D printed structures, which are subsequently validated experimentally. The gels are coated with gel

Clinical and biometrical 12-month follow-up in patients after reconstruction of the sural nerve biopsy defect by the collagen-based nerve guide Neuromaix.

Many new strategies for the reconstruction of peripheral nerve injuries have been explored for their effectiveness in supporting nerve regeneration. However only a few of these materials were actually clinically evaluated and approved for human use. This open, mono-center, non-randomized clinical study summarizes the 12-month follow-up of patients receiving reconstruction of the sural nerve biopsy defect by the collagen-based nerve guide Neuromaix. Neuromaix was implanted as a micro-structured, two-component scaffold bridging 20-40 mm nerve defects after sural nerve biopsy in twenty patients (

Intraneural metastasis of gastric carcinoma leads to sciatic nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue metastases, in particular intraneural metastasis, from any carcinomas seldom occur. To our knowledge, no case of sciatic nerve palsy due to intraneural metastasis of gastric carcinoma is reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A case is reported of a 82-year old woman with sciatic nerve palsy with intraneural metastasis of gastric carcinoma. Although she had undergone partial gastrectomy with T2b, N0, M0 two years ago and primary site was cured, she developed sciatic nerve palsy from the carcinoma metastasis directly to the nerve. Local anesthesia enhanced with increasing high-frequency ultrasound intensity.

The effect of local anesthetics, particularly those which are hydrophilic, such as tetrodotoxin, is impeded by tissue barriers that restrict access to individual nerve cells. Methods of enhancing penetration of tetrodotoxin into nerve include co-administration with chemical permeation enhancers, nanoencapsulation, and insonation with very low acoustic intensity ultrasound and microbubbles. In this study, we examined the effect of acoustic intensity on nerve block by tetrodotoxin and compared it to the effect on nerve block by bupivacaine, a more hydrophobic local anesthetic. Anesthetics were a

Anatomic relationships of the pudendal nerve branches.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize the distribution of the pudendal nerve branches and to correlate findings with injury risk related to common midurethral sling procedures. STUDY DESIGN: Dissections were performed in 18 female cadavers. Biopsies were obtained to confirm gross findings by histology. RESULTS: In all dissections, most of the clitoral and perineal nerves coursed caudal to the ventral portion of the perineal membrane. The inferior rectal nerve did not enter the pudendal canal in 44% (n = 8) of specimens. Nerve tissue was confirmed histologically in tissue sampled. CONCLUSION:…

Biochemistry of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Although carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs due to intrinsic or extrinsic causes, the idiopathic group outnumbers the rest by far. Compression of the median nerve may be due to mechanical or ischemic causation. The cause of idiopathic CTS is thought to be intermittent compression of the median nerve in predisposed people, especially working females, producing ischemia of the nerve. Reperfusion injury may occur during periods of recovery. Intermittent perfusion of the cellular tissue following ischemia releases free oxygen radicals. With continued oxidative stress, the normal antioxidant syste

Factor XIIIa as a nerve-associated transglutaminase.

Recent findings have led to changes in the traditional concept of nerve recovery, including the realization that injured nerves, like any ot … s system. Furthermore, similarity was observed in the postinjury behavior of FXIIIa in regenerating nerve tissues (peripheral nervous system of mammals and the central nervous system of fish). We suggest that the postinjury level of factor XIIIa in the nervous system may be related to the tissue's regenerative capacity, and that FXIIIa may therefore be a link …

Hydrogen-releasing electroactive nerve guidance conduits promote peripheral nerve regeneration by remodeling the microenvironment.

Following peripheral nerve injury (PNI), the early inflammatory response induces excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in severe damage to the regenerative microenvironment, which poses a huge challenge to the autonomous regeneration of nerves. Exogenous nerve grafts are often needed to assist and guide nerve regeneration. In recent years, nerve conduits (NGCs) with directional structures and favorable bioactivity have made significant progress, but single-function scaffolds still cannot meet the multiple needs of reconstructing an ideal regenerative microenvironment

The long-term functional recovery of repair of sciatic nerve transection with biogenic conduits.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term regenerative capacity over a 15-mm nerve gap of an autologous nerve conduit, the biogenic conduit (BC), 16 weeks after sciatic nerve transection in the rat. METHODS: A 19-mm long polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tube was implanted parallely to the sciatic nerve. After implantation, a connective tissue cover developed around the PVC-tube, the so-called BC. After removal of the PVC-tube the BCs filled with fibrin (n = 8) were compared to autologous nerve grafts (n = 8). Sciatic functional index (SFI) was evaluated every 4 weeks, histological
