Neural Signature for Auditory Hallucinations in Schizophrenia: A High-Resolution Positron Emission Tomography Study with Fludeoxyglucose (18F).

OBJECTIVE: Auditory hallucinations (AHs) are a core symptom of schizophrenia. We investigated the neural signature of AHs by comparing hallucinating patients with schizophrenia with non-hallucinating patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: We recruited hallucinating patients with schizophrenia meeting the criteria for persistent, prominent, and predominant AHs (n=10) and non-hallucinating patients with schizophrenia (n=12). Various clinical assessments were performed incluing Psychotic Symptom Rating Scale for Auditory Hallucinations. Using fludeoxyglucose (18F) positron emission tomography, re

Cell-Type-Specific Alternative Splicing Governs Cell Fate in the Developing Cerebral Cortex.

Alternative splicing is prevalent in the mammalian brain. To interrogate the functional role of alternative splicing in neural development, we analyzed purified neural progenitor cells (NPCs) and neurons from developing cerebral cortices, revealing hundreds of differentially spliced exons that preferentially alter key protein domains-especially in cytoskeletal proteins-and can harbor disease-causing mutations. We show that Ptbp1 and Rbfox proteins antagonistically govern the NPC-to-neuron transition by regulating neuron-specific exons. Whereas Ptbp1 maintains apical progenitors partly through

Pleural nodule identification in low-dose and thin-slice lung computed tomography.

A completely automated system for the identification of pleural nodules in low-dose and thin-slice computed tomography (CT) of the lung has been developed. The directional-gradient concentration method has been applied to the pleura surface and combined with a morphological opening-based procedure to generate a list of nodule candidates. Each nodule candidate is characterized by 12 morphological and textural features, which are analyzed by a rule-based filter and a neural classifier. This detection system has been developed and validated on a dataset of 42 annotated CT scans. The k-fold cross

Surgical management of late post-traumatic and ischemic neuropathies involving the lower extremities: classification and results of therapy.

Traumatic/ischemic events such as fractures, dislocations, lacerations, compression, vascular injuries, and embolus can result in several degrees of nerve injury with resultant sequelae of paralysis, sensory loss, and irritative phenomena (pain, hyperesthesia, and dysesthesia). Neuroma pain may prevent rehabilitation following amputation or nerve lacerations. Thirty-four patients with the late sequelae of traumatic/ischemic neuropathies underwent 36 neural operations using magnification techniques to define and repair neural lesions. Major bone and joint reconstruction could be performed at th

Epidemiology of neural tube defects in South America.

We present data from the Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECLAMC) on prevalence rates and etiologic factor associations in neural tube defects. Two series of data are analyzed: the A series, including 740,139 consecutive infants born in the 1967-1979 period suitable for secular trend analysis and case-control study of risk factors; and the B series, including 255,834 consecutive stillborn and liveborn infants of the 1980-1982 period suitable for prevalence rate analysis. Anencephaly was registered in 6.0/10,000 births, A spina bifida aperta in 6.2/10,000 births,

The effect of private attitudes on public policy. Prenatal screening for neural tube defects as a prototype.

The quantitative use of patients' attitudes in medicine has thus far been limited to decisions involving either treatment alternatives or the use or nonuse of a particular diagnostic test. Preference theory has not been applied either to the use of screening tests or to the development of large-scale health-related public policy decisions. In this paper we have, in a prototypical fashion, analyzed the effect patient attitudes have on a public policy decision faced by many countries today--whether or not to institute a screening program for neural tube defects. We have assessed the attitudes of

The clinical correlation of a new practical MRI method for grading cervical neural foraminal stenosis based on oblique sagittal images.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether each grade in a new system suggested by Park et al. (Park system) to assess cervical neural foraminal stenosis validly correlates with the associated clinical findings and to evaluate the interobserver agreement in grading between two MRI readers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 166 patients (98 men and 68 women; mean age, 46 years) at our institution who underwent oblique sagittal MRI of the cervical spine. Using the new Park grading system, two radiologists evaluated the MRI findings for the presence and grade of cervical neu

When emotion meets conflict: Additive but not synergistic effects in neural oscillatory activity.

Cognitive control allows individuals to regulate their behavior in the face of conflicting or distracting information. Growing evidence suggests that emotional states-particularly self-related emotions-can modulate these control processes. This study explored neural mechanisms underlying amplification of the conflict-adaptation effect (CAE) by self-related emotions, replicating Landman and van Steenbergen (2020). Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were analyzed during two successive trials (Trial N-1 and Trial N) in a prime-probe task. Corrugator muscle activity was also measured as an index of e

Connectomes: a re-emerging hub dataset for neuroscience.

Connectomics aims to generate complete neural wiring diagrams and leverage them to explain brain function at a systems level. Traditional neuroscience has relied on sparse recordings and partial circuit reconstructions, limiting mechanistic insight into how distributed neural activity produces behavior. By contrast, connectomes provide comprehensive maps of all neurons and all synapses, analogous in some respects to the transformative impact of whole-genome sequencing in biology. Early efforts, including the Caenorhabditis elegans connectome, required extensive manual reconstruction, but recen

Spatial-temporal representation of cortical neural activity evoked by acupuncture stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Acupuncture modulates cognitive functions through acupoint stimulation and demonstrates significant regulatory effects on brain disorders. However, the underlying neurodynamic mechanisms of acupuncture remain unclear due to a lack of effective measures of brain activity. In this study, we developed an acupuncture-related potential (ARP) method based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the dynamic representation mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation. By analyzing ARP signal features and functional networks to capture stimulus-evoked brain activity, we derived spatiote

Lesion of the ventral or dorsal hippocampus in the rat delays puberty, follicular growth and secretion of sex steroid hormones.

INTRODUCTION: The hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis is controlled by gonadotropins and by a direct neural pathway to the gonads. New evidence suggests the existence of neural connection from the hippocampus to the hypothalamus that can regulate its function. It could be a new control on the well-regulated hormonal and neural connection to the gonads and hence in reproduction. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of independent lesion of the dorsal or ventral hippocampus in the female rat on the onset of puberty, follicular growth and serum concentration of sex steroid and gon

ESCAN: Efficient GPU sharing for cascade neural network inference.

Cascading, as a multi-model combination approach, balances model execution efficiency and accuracy. This excellent method is widely used in various industrial production and commercial deployments, particularly in cloud-based inference services. With the increasing demand for low-latency services, researchers are more focused on the execution efficiency of these models, especially device utilization. It is highly desirable to fully utilize GPU resources by multiplexing different inference tasks on the same GPU through device-sharing techniques such as Multiprocessing Services (MPS). However, w

Value signals guiding choices for cannabis versus non-drug rewards in people who use cannabis near-daily.

RATIONALE: Despite the critical role of choice processes in substance use disorders, the neurobehavioral mechanisms guiding human decisions about drugs remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize the neural encoding of subjective value (SV) for cannabis versus non-drug rewards (snacks) in people who use cannabis on a near-daily/daily frequency (PWUCF) and assessed the impact of cannabis and snack stimuli ('cues') on SV encoding. METHODS: Twenty-one non-treatment-seeking PWUCF (≥4 days/week; 1 female) participated in an inpatient, crossover experiment with four counterbalan

Exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and the risk of neural tube defects: A systematic review.

Exposure to pesticides during pregnancy has been associated with several serious congenital malformations, such as neural tube defects, therefore, is a cause for concern in terms of human health. This review aims to gather information related to maternal exposure during pregnancy and the risk of triggering neural tube defects in the offspring. The search strategy for the studies followed the PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a systematic search in the Science Direct, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for all epidemiological studies that sought to associate ex

High frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation promotes long lasting phrenic motoneuron excitability via GABAergic networks.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a promising, innovative, and non-invasive therapy used clinically. Efficacy of rTMS has been demonstrated to ameliorate psychiatric disorders and neuropathic pain through neuromodulation of affected neural circuits. However, little is known about the mechanisms and the specific neural circuits via which rTMS facilitates these functional effects. The aim of this study was to begin revealing the mechanisms by which rTMS may tap into existing neural circuits, by using a well characterized spinal motor circuit - the phrenic circuit. Here we hy

Early Shortening of Wrist Flexor Muscles Coincides With Poor Recovery After Stroke.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism and time course of increased wrist joint stiffness poststroke and clinically observed wrist flexion deformity is still not well understood. The components contributing to increased joint stiffness are of neural reflexive and peripheral tissue origin and quantified by reflexive torque and muscle slack length and stiffness coefficient parameters. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the time course of the components contributing to wrist joint stiffness during the first 26 weeks poststroke in a group of patients, stratified by prognosis and functional recovery of the upper extrem

Embryonic Chicken Transplantation is a Promising Model for Studying the Invasive Behavior of Melanoma Cells.

Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition is a hallmark event in the metastatic cascade conferring invasive ability to tumor cells. There are ongoing efforts to replicate the physiological events occurring during mobilization of tumor cells in model systems. However, few systems are able to capture these complex in vivo events. The embryonic chicken transplantation model has emerged as a useful system to assess melanoma cells including functions that are relevant to the metastatic process, namely invasion and plasticity. The chicken embryo represents an accessible and economical 3-dimensional in vi

Double-powered free gracilis muscle transfer for smile reanimation: A longitudinal optoelectronic study.

The choice of the motor donor nerve is a crucial point in free flap transfer algorithms. In the case of unilateral facial paralysis, the contralateral healthy facial nerve can provide coordinated smile animation and spontaneous emotional expression, but with unpredictable axonal ingrowth into the recipient muscle. Otherwise, the masseteric nerve ipsilateral to the paralysis can provide a powerful neural input, without a spontaneous trigger of the smile. Harvesting a bulky muscular free flap may enhance the quantity of contraction but esthetic results are unpleasant. Therefore, the logical solu

Adaptations in human neuromuscular function following prolonged unweighting: II. Neurological properties and motor imagery efficacy.

Strength loss following disuse may result from alterations in muscle and/or neurological properties. In this paper, we report our findings on human plantar flexor neurological properties following 4 wk of limb suspension [unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS)], along with the effect of motor imagery (MI) training on these properties. In the companion paper (Part I), we report our findings on the changes in skeletal muscle properties. Additionally, in the present paper, we analyze our findings to determine the relative contribution of neural and muscular factors in strength loss. Measurements
