The impact of U-Net architecture choices and skip connections on the robustness of segmentation across texture variations.

BACKGROUND: Since its introduction in 2015, the U-Net architecture has become popular for medical image segmentation. U-Net is known for its "skip connections," which transfer image details directly to its decoder branch at various levels. However, it's unclear how these skip connections affect the model's performance when the texture of input images varies. METHODS: To explore this, we tested six types of U-Net-like architectures in three groups: Standard (U-Net and V-Net), No-Skip (U-Net and V-Net without skip connections), and Enhanced (AGU-Net and UNet++, which have extra skip connections

[im6Am-DC: a model for predicting RNA sequence N6,2'-O-dimethyladenosine modification by integrating DenseNet and attention mechanism].

N6,2'-O-dimethyladenosine (m6Am), as a critical RNA epigenetic modification, has become a hot topic in current research due to its unique chemical structure and biological functions. m6Am not only regulates mRNA stability and half-life but also modulates its interactions with translation initiation factors and RNA-binding proteins, thereby playing a crucial role in post-transcriptional regulation. Recent medical research indicates that m6Am is closely associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, as well as multiple viral infections and tumor development. BacTermFinder: a comprehensive and general bacterial terminator finder using a CNN ensemble.

A terminator is a DNA region that ends the transcription process. Currently, multiple computational tools are available for predicting bacterial terminators. However, these methods are specialized for certain bacteria or terminator type (i.e. intrinsic or factor-dependent). In this work, we developed BacTermFinder using an ensemble of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) receiving as input four different representations of terminator sequences. To develop BacTermFinder, we collected roughly 41 000 bacterial terminators (intrinsic and factor-dependent) of 22 species with varying GC-content (fro

Improved U-Net based on ResNet and SE-Net with dual attention mechanism for glottis semantic segmentation.

In previous tasks of glottis image segmentation, the position attention mechanism was rarely incorporated, neglecting the detailed information in glottis position detection. Aiming to improve the U-Net architecture, this study introduces the dual attention mechanism based on the squeeze and excitation (SE)-Net model. This mechanism can integrate traditional channel attention with position attention mechanisms to effectively adjust the weights of crucial features and significance of positions. Replacing the weight adjustment mechanism in SE-Net with the dual attention mechanism creates a broade

ASF-LKUNet: Adjacent-scale fusion U-Net with large kernel for multi-organ segmentation.

In the multi-organ segmentation task of medical images, there are some challenging issues such as the complex background, blurred boundaries between organs, and the larger scale difference in volume. Due to the local receptive fields of conventional convolution operations, it is difficult to obtain desirable results by directly using them for multi-organ segmentation. While Transformer-based models have global information, there is a significant dependency on hardware because of the high computational demands. Meanwhile, the depthwise convolution with large kernel can capture global informatio

Self-balancing Incremental Broad Learning System with privacy protection.

Incremental learning algorithms have been developed as an efficient solution for fast remodeling in Broad Learning Systems (BLS) without a retraining process. Even though the structure and performance of broad learning are gradually showing superiority, private data leakage in broad learning systems is still a problem that needs to be solved. Recently, Multiparty Secure Broad Learning System (MSBLS) is proposed to allow two clients to participate training. However, privacy-preserving broad learning across multiple clients has received limited attention. In this paper, we propose a Self-Balanci

Coagulo-Net: Enhancing the mathematical modeling of blood coagulation using physics-informed neural networks.

Blood coagulation, which involves a group of complex biochemical reactions, is a crucial step in hemostasis to stop bleeding at the injury site of a blood vessel. Coagulation abnormalities, such as hypercoagulation and hypocoagulation, could either cause thrombosis or hemorrhage, resulting in severe clinical consequences. Mathematical models of blood coagulation have been widely used to improve the understanding of the pathophysiology of coagulation disorders, guide the design and testing of new anticoagulants or other therapeutic agents, and promote precision medicine. However, estimating the

Multibranch semantic image segmentation model based on edge optimization and category perception.

In semantic image segmentation tasks, most methods fail to fully use the characteristics of different scales and levels but rather directly perform upsampling. This may cause some effective information to be mistaken for redundant information and discarded, which in turn causes object segmentation confusion. As a convolutional layer deepens, the loss of spatial detail information makes the segmentation effect achieved at the object boundary insufficiently accurate. To address the above problems, we propose an edge optimization and category-aware multibranch semantic segmentation network (ECMNe

Convolutional neural network-based vocal cord tumor classification technique for home-based self-prescreening purpose.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we proposed a deep learning technique that can simultaneously detect suspicious positions of benign vocal cord tumors in laparoscopic images and classify the types of tumors into cysts, granulomas, leukoplakia, nodules and polyps. This technique is useful for simplified home-based self-prescreening purposes to detect the generation of tumors around the vocal cord early in the benign stage. RESULTS: We implemented four convolutional neural network (CNN) models (two Mask R-CNNs, Yolo V4, and a single-shot detector) that were trained, validated and tested using 2183 la

Parametric Neural Network-Based Model Free Adaptive Tracking Control Method and Its Application to AFS/DYC System.

This paper deals with adaptive nonlinear identification and trajectory tracking problem for model free nonlinear systems via parametric neural network (PNN). Firstly, a more effective PNN identifier is developed to obtain the unknown system dynamics, where a parameter error driven updating law is synthesized to ensure good identification performance in terms of accuracy and rapidity. Then, an adaptive tracking controller consisting of a feedback control term to compensate the identified nonlinearity and a sliding model control term to deal with the modeling error is established. The Lyapunov a

Emotion Classification from EEG with a Low-Cost BCI Versus a High-End Equipment.

The assessment of physiological signals such as the electroencephalography (EEG) has become a key point in the research area of emotion detection. This study compares the performance of two EEG devices, a low-cost brain-computer interface (BCI) (Emotiv EPOC+) and a high-end EEG (BrainVision), for the detection of four emotional conditions over 20 participants. For that purpose, signals were acquired with both devices under the same experimental procedure, and a comparison was made under three different scenarios, according to the number of channels selected and the sampling frequency of the si

Automatic diagnosis of pneumothorax with M-mode ultrasound images based on D-MPL.

PURPOSE: To address the difficulties of M-mode ultrasound images classification in pneumothorax diagnosis and the shortcomings of existing neural network algorithms in this field, we proposed an M-mode ultrasound images classification model based on Disturbed Meta-Pseudo-Labels (D-MPL). METHODS: An M-mode ultrasound image augmentation system was designed to make the model more robust and generalizable. In D-MPL, teacher-generated pseudo-labeling was first taught to students through a soft mask, and additional disturbance data were added to the teacher network. As the loss of the teacher netwo

An analysis of the influence of transfer learning when measuring the tortuosity of blood vessels.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can provide excellent results regarding the segmentation of blood vessels. One important aspect of CNNs is that they can be trained on large amounts of data and then be made available, for instance, in image processing software. The pre-trained CNNs can then be easily applied in downstream blood vessel characterization tasks, such as the calculation of the length, tortuosity, or caliber of the blood vessels. Yet, it is still unclear if pre-trained CNNs can provide robust, unbiased, results in downstream tasks involving the morpholo

Scalable Neural Decoder for Topological Surface Codes.

With the advent of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices, practical quantum computing has seemingly come into reach. However, to go beyond proof-of-principle calculations, the current processing architectures will need to scale up to larger quantum circuits which will require fast and scalable algorithms for quantum error correction. Here, we present a neural network based decoder that, for a family of stabilizer codes subject to depolarizing noise and syndrome measurement errors, is scalable to tens of thousands of qubits (in contrast to other recent machine learning inspired decode

Classification of Non-tumorous Facial Pigmentation Disorders Using Generative Adversarial Networks and Improved SMOTE.

The diagnosis of non-tumorous facial pigmentation disorders is crucial since facial pigmentations can serve as a health indicator for other more serious diseases. The computer-based classification of non-tumorous facial pigmentation disorders using images / photographs allows automated diagnosis of such disorders. However, the classification performance of existing methods is still not satisfactory due to the limited real-world images available for research. In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to applying generative adversarial network (GAN) with improved synthetic minority over-sampli

Precise laminae segmentation based on neural network for robot-assisted decompressive laminectomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The decompressive laminectomy is one of the most common operations to treat lumbar spinal stenosis by removing the laminae above the spinal nerve. Recently, an increasing number of robots are deployed during the surgical process to reduce the burden on surgeons and to reduce complications. However, for the robot-assisted decompressive laminectomy, an accurate 3D model of laminae from a CT image is highly desired. The purpose of this paper is to precisely segment the laminae with fewer calculations. METHODS: We propose a two-stage neural network SegRe-Net. In the firs

Convolutional neural network for efficient estimation of regional brain strains.

Head injury models are important tools to study concussion biomechanics but are impractical for real-world use because they are too slow. Here, we develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) to estimate regional brain strains instantly and accurately by conceptualizing head rotational velocity profiles as two-dimensional images for input. We use two impact datasets with augmentation to investigate the CNN prediction performances with a variety of training-testing configurations. Three strain measures are considered, including maximum principal strain (MPS) of the whole brain, MPS of the corpu

Alzheimer's disease diagnosis based on multiple cluster dense convolutional networks.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder with progressive impairment of memory and cognitive functions. Structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) play important role to evaluate the brain anatomical changes for AD Diagnosis. Machine learning technologies have been widely studied on MRI computation and analysis for quantitative evaluation and computer-aided-diagnosis of AD. Most existing methods extract the hand-craft features after image processing such as registration and segmentation, and then train a classifier to distinguish AD subjects from other groups. Mot
