Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a tumour suppressor gene syndrome characterized by multiple cutaneous and plexiform neurofibromas. Focal osseous abnormalities, short stature, and decreased bone mineral density are also frequent in people with NF1. We measured serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in 55 patients with NF1 and 58 healthy controls, and correlated the findings in the patients with NF1 with their estimated number of dermal neurofibromas. Geometric mean (SD) serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was 14.0 (1.6) ng/mL among the patients with NF1 compared with 31.4 (1.7) ng/mL among h

Neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1) is a multisystem disorder presenting with a variety of clinical and imaging manifestations. Neural and non-neural tumours, and unusual benign miscellaneous conditions, separately or combined, are encountered in variable locations. We present a 2(1/2)-year-old boy with NF-1 who demonstrated coexisting optic pathway glioma with involvement of the chiasm and optic nerve, orbital alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma and bilateral optic nerve sheath dural ectasia.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is considered to be a heterogeneous neuroectodermal disease clinically defined by the presence of neurofibromas, multiple café-au-lait spots, intertriginous freckles and Lisch nodules. Mosaicism explains atypical presentations of the disease. Early mutations, before tissue differentiation, give rise to generalized disease. We report an atypical presentation of neurofibromatosis with an unusual distribution of neurofibromas, a peculiar, clinically and pathologically, neurofibroma on the trunk and the association with an ovarian serous cystoadenofibroma.

The present paper reports about a 16-year-old male with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) of the Wishart type with bilateral deafness who had undergone cochlear implantation after resection of the acoustic neuroma (AN) of the same side. Neural response telemetry (NRT) recordings are essential in those patients during cochlear implantation where no stapedial reflexes can be electrically elicited due to the resection of the AN. In the present case, amplitude growth function and a type II pattern of the NRT waveforms could be well established. The comparison of the N(1) response intra-operatively a

The neurofibromatosis (NF) represent a set of conditions having different clinical manifestations, prognosis and inheritance. It has been presented--on clinical grounds--seven types of NF, but for only two of these National Institute of Health Consensus Development Conference (NIHCDC) advent a set of diagnostic criteria. The genes responsible for NF1 and NF2 were mapped to the long arm of chromosome 17 (17q11.2) and respectively 22 (22q11.2), and their protein product (neurofibromin and respectively merlin or schwanomin) was identified. Recent studies are proved that NF1 and NF2 genes act as a

This article describes some of the genodermatoses encountered in the black populations in Africa, starting with ainhum, which appears to be genetically determined. Palmoplantar keratodermas are common in Africa but are difficult to classify and their hereditary nature is not always recognized. Of the ichthyoses, the lamellar type is commonest, with the so-called bathing-suit distribution apparently unique to Africans. Albinism and xeroderma pigmentosum are important causes of cutaneous malignancy in the tropics. Neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis are relatively common, whereas hypermelan

IMPORTANCE: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related schwannomatosis is a genetic disease characterized by multiple tumors involving the nervous system. Some patients develop cutaneous schwannomas with characteristic histologic features that, if recognized, may have diagnostic and prognostic value.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and histopathologic features of cutaneous schwannomas in a cohort of patients from a multidisciplinary NF2 clinic.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We have prospectively analyzed a series of 49 patients with NF2-related schwannomatosis and have selected the ones

NF2-Related Schwannomatosis (NF2-SWN) is a rare tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by heterogeneous clinical manifestations that substantially impact quality of life (QOL). In this diverse patient population, a disease-specific QOL instrument is essential for both research and clinical decision-making. Insight into factors associated with QOL may further facilitate the tailoring of management strategies to individual patient needs. This study aimed to validate the Dutch version of the NF2 Impact on Quality of Life questionnaire (NFTI-QOL) and to identify factors associated with QOL in

OBJECTIVE: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are aggressive sarcomas predominantly associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). However, their occurrence within NF type 2 (NF2)-related and SMARCB1-related schwannomatosis remains rare and poorly characterized. Accurate and timely diagnosis is challenging due to clinical and radiological similarities with benign schwannomas, potentially delaying appropriate management and impacting outcomes. This study presents an institutional case series aiming to better characterize the clinical presentations specifically for MPNSTs arising

The Shapiro xanthogranuloma is a histopathologic form of xanthogranuloma that shows closely packed monomorphous cells, which can extend into the subcutaneous fat; it usually lacks routine diagnostic features of xanthogranuloma. Herein we describe two cases of Shapiro xanthogranuloma occurring in a neonate and in an infant, which were initially thought to be hematologic malignancies. One patient's presentation as a "blueberry muffin baby" added to the diagnostic confusion. Pediatric dermatologists, dermatologists, and dermatopathologists need to be aware of the Shapiro xanthogranuloma and its c

INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya arteriopathy, which can be idiopathic or associated with sickle cell disease, neurofibromatosis, Down syndrome, or cranial radiation therapy, is a progressive cerebral arteriopathy associated with high rates of incident and recurrent stroke. Little is known about how these subgroups differ with respect to clinical presentation, radiographic findings, stroke risk, and functional outcomes.
METHODS: Using ICD codes, we identified children ages 28 days to 18 years treated for moyamoya arteriopathy at our tertiary care center between 2003 and 2019. Demographic, clinical, and

INTRODUCTION: Patients with penile schwannoma are rare and usually with variant presentations. No evidence-based clinical guideline exists for diagnosis or treatment. To put schwannoma into differential diagnoses of benign soft tissue lesions in the penis is important.
AIM: To analyze and categorize clinical, histopathological, and radiological presentations and apply possible explanation on several fields of penile schwannoma.
METHODS: We collected the English literature through the PubMed database of the National Library of Medicine up to October 2019. A newly diagnosed case in Chang Gung

We report the case of an 11-month-old white male who had a family history of neurofibromatosis, had multiple café-au-lait spots on the trunk and extremities, and was diagnosed with a malignant triton tumor of the rectum. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a malignant triton tumor of the rectum and one of the youngest patients reported with the tumor.

In most cases, while schwannoma is sporadically manifested as a single benign neoplasm, the presence of multiple schwannomas in one patient is usually indicative of neurofibromatosis 2. However, several recent reports have suggested that schwannomatosis itself may also be a distinct clinical entity. This study examines an extremely rare case of probable schwannomatosis associated with intracranial, intraspinal and peripheral involvements. A 63-year-old woman presented with a seven-year history of palpable lumps on both sides of the supraclavicular area and hearing impairment in both ears. On p

Approximately 100 cases of segmental neurofibromatosis (NF5) have been reported in the recent literature. Patients with NF5 present with café-au-lait macules, freckles, and/or neurofibromas limited to one or adjacent dermatomes. Neurofibromas arising in NF5 have been uniformly considered to be benign; patients were thought to have an excellent prognosis without the risk of developing malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), which are characteristic in patients with the generalized form of this disease, von Recklinghausen's NF. In this report the authors detail the first observations o

Significant advances were reported this year in our understanding of the association of lens opacities with neurofibromatosis type 2 and the genetics of the aniridia-Wilms' tumor association. The first successful surgical reattachment of detached retinas in patients with incontinentia pigmenti are reported. An important retrospective review of young adults with congenital rubella syndrome implies that the timing of infection during gestation is not related to the incidence of individual ocular conditions. The ophthalmic features of the MELAS syndrome, a mitochondrially inherited encephalomyopa
