The Brophy Kit: A Manual Hemodialysis Device for Neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in critically ill neonates, including very and extremely low birth weight (VLBW, ELBW) neonates. In severe cases, kidney replacement therapy (KRT) may be warranted. Currently, available KRT devices are only indicated for those weighing ≥ 2.5 kg and require a double lumen or 2 separate single lumen catheters. We miniaturized the Kirpa Kit manual dialysis device, naming it the Brophy Kit, and we assessed its in vitro clearance and ultrafiltration (UF) performance. METHODS: We diluted packed red blood cells to a normal hematocrit (Hct: 31.1%-36.8

Bias-Driven Gauche-to-Trans Transformation of Surfactant Assembly as Permselective Gates for Efficient Ammonia Electrosynthesis from Nitrate.

Electrochemical conversion of nitrate waste into ammonia represents a promising route for closing the anthropogenic nitrogen cycle, yet its efficiency is severely hampered by the sluggish supply of dilute nitrate and the parasitic hydrogen evolution derived from overwhelming interfacial water. Herein, we exploit the potential-driven structural transformation of amphiphilic surfactant assembly from disordered gauche conformations to ordered all-trans conformations to construct a dynamic permselective gate at the reaction interface. In situ spectroscopic investigations reveal that this field-ind…

Nuclear magnetic resonance revealed the structural unit difference and polymerization process of pre-humic acid from different organic waste sources.

Pre-humic acid (HA) is brown humus that is only soluble in dilute alkali in natural soil. However, the mechanism underlying HA structural heterogeneity caused by material differences remains unknown. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure of HA with varying molecular weights. 1H NMR revealed that HA structures from the same source exhibit similar chemical shifts at various molecular weights, indicating that macromolecular and micromolecular HA had the same structural unit. Principal coordinate analysis d

Effects of nitrite exposure on metamorphosis and skeletal development of Bufo gargarizans.

Nitrite, as a part of nitrogen cycle, is one of the most common toxic compounds in aquatic ecosystems. Since skeletal development is an essential process during amphibian metamorphosis, exposure of larval amphibians to nitrite might disrupt skeletal development. To evaluate whether nitrite affects skeletal development of amphibian larvae, Bufo gargarizans larvae at Gs26 were exposed to 10, 100, 500 and 1000 μg/L nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N) in the present study. The metamorphosis rate, body weight, body length, forelimb length and hindlimb length of B. gargarizans exposed to NO2-N were decreased. …

Nighttime Chemistry and Morning Isoprene Can Drive Urban Ozone Downwind of a Major Deciduous Forest.

Isoprene is the predominant non-methane volatile organic compound emitted to the atmosphere and shapes tropospheric composition and biogeochemistry through its effects on ozone, other oxidants, aerosols, and the nitrogen cycle. Isoprene is emitted naturally by vegetation during daytime, when its photo-oxidation is rapid, and in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) produces ozone and degrades air quality in polluted regions. Here, we show for a city downwind of an isoprene-emitting forest (St. Louis, MO) that isoprene actually peaks at night; ambient levels then endure, owing to low nighttime …

INDISIM-Paracoccus, an individual-based and thermodynamic model for a denitrifying bacterium.

We have developed an individual-based model for denitrifying bacteria. The model, called INDISIM-Paracoccus, embeds a thermodynamic model for bacterial yield prediction inside the individual-based model INDISIM, and is designed to simulate the bacterial cell population behavior and the product dynamics within the culture. The INDISIM-Paracoccus model assumes a culture medium containing succinate as a carbon source, ammonium as a nitrogen source and various electron acceptors such as oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, nitric oxide and nitrous oxide to simulate in continuous or batch culture the differen

Statistical approaches for identifying air pollutant mixtures associated with aircraft departures at Los Angeles International Airport.

Aircraft departures emit multiple pollutants common to other near-airport sources, making it challenging to determine relative source contributions. While there may not be unique tracers of aircraft emissions, examination of multipollutant concentration patterns in combination with flight activity can facilitate source attribution. In this study, we examine concentrations of continuously monitored air pollutants measured in 2008 near a departure runway at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), considering single-pollutant associations with landing and takeoff (LTO) of the aircraft (LTO activ

Molecular architecture of giant viruses infecting microbial eukaryotes (protists).

In this review, I describe recent findings on the molecular architecture and genomic characterization of giant viruses that infect microbial eukaryotes (protists) across diverse ecosystems and ecological niches. Giant viruses are distinguished by their large and complex genomes, which encode a wide range of functions, including protein translation, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, nitrogen cycling, light assimilation, and key metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Additionally, these genomes feature unique genes, often acquired through horizontal gene transfe

Denitrification dominates dissimilatory nitrate reduction across global natural ecosystems.

Denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are three competing processes of microbial nitrate reduction that determine the degree of ecosystem nitrogen (N) loss versus recycling. However, the global patterns and drivers of relative contributions of these N cycling processes to soil or sediment nitrate reduction remain unknown, limiting our understanding of the global N balance and management. Here, we compiled a global dataset of 1570 observations from a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. We found that denitrif

Nitrate sink function of riparian zones induced by river stage fluctuations.

River stage fluctuation (RSF) induced by tides, dam releases, or storms may lead to enhanced nitrogen cycling (N cycling) in riparian zones (RZ). We conducted a laboratory water table manipulation experiment and applied a multiphase flow and transport model (TOUGHREACT) to investigate the role of RSF in N cycling in the RZ. Coupled nitrification and denitrification occur in the water table fluctuation zone under alternating aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Nitrate removal was enhanced in the saturated and unsaturated zones of the RZ. The net nitrate reduction rate in groundwater increased wit

Effect of mineral nutritional status on shoot-root partitioning of photoassimilates and cycling of mineral nutrients.

Mineral nutrients taken up by the roots are, as a rule, transported in the xylem to the shoot, and photoassimilates transported in the phloem to the roots. According to the Thornley model of photosynthate partitioning, nutrient deficiencies should favour photosynthate partitioning to the roots. Examples are cited to show that this preferential partitioning is dependent on phloem mobility and hence on nutrient cycling from shoot to roots. Thus, root growth is enhanced under nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies, but not under deficiencies of nutrients of low mobility in the phloem, such as calci

Empirical evidence reveals seasonally dependent reduction in nitrification in coastal sediments subjected to near future ocean acidification.

Research so far has provided little evidence that benthic biogeochemical cycling is affected by ocean acidification under realistic climate change scenarios. We measured nutrient exchange and sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) rates to estimate nitrification in natural coastal permeable and fine sandy sediments under pre-phytoplankton bloom and bloom conditions. Ocean acidification, as mimicked in the laboratory by a realistic pH decrease of 0.3, significantly reduced SCOC on average by 60% and benthic nitrification rates on average by 94% in both sediment types in February (pre-bloo

Coordinated regulation of trimethylamine catabolism in abundant marine bacteria.

Methylated amines (MAs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment, constituting an important part of the marine dissolved organic nitrogen pool and contributing to the formation of cloud condensation nuclei in the marine atmosphere. The aerobic trimethylamine (TMA) oxidation pathway represents the primary route for TMA utilization in marine environments and has been characterized in the model marine Roseobacter group bacterium Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3. However, the regulatory mechanism underlying this pathway has remained unclear. Transcriptome analysis revealed coordinated induction of the enti

Nutrition cycling microbiomes drive the succession of antibiotic resistome in long-term manured soils.

INTRODUCTION: The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment has received widespread attention. Nutrition cycling microbiomes specifically refer to microorganisms capable of mineralizing nitrogen and phosphorus, which dominate the microbial community in long-term manured soils. However, changes in nutrition cycling genes/microbiomes and the mechanisms by which these microbiomes mediate ARG transfer through vertical and horizontal gene transfer remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate how nutrition cycling microbiomes mediate the dissemination an

Elements on the move: How ungulate migration expands Alpine biogeochemical footprints.

Through depositing waste products, animals influence the spatial distribution of elements across landscapes. Yet the relationship between animal movement and element distribution remains poorly characterized. We developed a spatially explicit agent-based model to test how migratory versus resident red deer (Cervus elaphus) influence nitrogen redistribution across an alpine landscape in the Central-Eastern Italian Alps. Specifically, we asked how both local-scale and landscape-scale movement alter the spatial extent and magnitude of nitrogen deposition. We parameterized our model with GPS telem
