Developing cultural competence in caring for people with mental health conditions.

As cultural competence becomes embedded in healthcare, it is important to consider this concept in the context of caring for patients with mental health conditions in general hospital settings. Adult nurses are likely to encounter patients with such conditions who are experiencing a mental health crisis in their practice. However, a lack of opportunity to develop the skills required to engage with patients whose behaviours may be unfamiliar or perceived as challenging can result in suboptimal experiences of care. Developing cultural competence can enhance adult nurses' ability to deliver effec

Risk factors for birth asphyxia and brain damage in pregnancy and labour.

In this review the patho-physiology and risk factors of birth asphyxia are discussed. Simple and appropriate, but scientifically sound, technology for the prevention of birth asphyxia is described. This can be used at home, in the community, in health sub-centres and health centres to identify and assess risk factors so that appropriate referral can be made. Based on experience in developing countries, actions which can be performed by the mother, relatives, neighbours, traditional birth attendants and nurses and midwives are described.

A Statewide Model for Assisting Nursing Home Residents to Transition Successfully to the Community.

Minnesota's Return to Community Initiative (RTCI) is a novel, statewide initiative to assist private paying nursing home residents to return to the community and to remain in that setting without converting to Medicaid. The objective of this manuscript is to describe in detail RTCI's development and design, its key operational components, and characteristics of its clients and their care outcomes. Data on client characteristics and outcomes come from the Minimum Data Set, staff assessments of clients and caregivers, and Medicaid eligibility files. Most clients transitioned by the RTCI had ente

School nurses' perceptions of providing the HPV vaccine to adolescents in undervaccinated communities in Stockholm: A qualitative study.

In Sweden, HPV vaccination is freely available to all adolescents aged 10-12 through a national, school-based program, but vaccine confidence and uptake are lower than for other childhood vaccines, with notable disparities between groups. School nurses are uniquely positioned to influence this, and the aim of this qualitative study was thus to understand their perceptions about the challenges associated with providing the HPV vaccine to adolescents in undervaccinated communities in Stockholm, Sweden. Between June and November 2024, we conducted 21 in-depth interviews with school nurses working

Sociostructural Determinants of Health for People Living With HIV During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Policy Brief for Future Global Health Crises.

The dual pandemics of COVID-19 and HIV have underscored critical gaps in global health policy, particularly regarding disproportionate impacts on people living with HIV, often failing to address sociostructural determinants of health (sSDoH) that fuel inequities. Nurses and other health care practitioners, possessing unique knowledge and technical capacity, are vital in advocating for policy innovations that address the civil and human rights of vulnerable populations. This policy brief, informed by historical health frameworks like the Alma-Ata Declaration and contemporary understandings of s

Enhanced maternal and child health nurse care for women experiencing intimate partner/family violence: protocol for MOVE, a cluster randomised trial of screening and referral in primary health care.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) can result in significant harm to women and families and is especially prevalent when women are pregnant or recent mothers. Maternal and child health nurses (MCHN) in Victoria, Australia are community-based nurse/midwives who see over 95% of all mothers with newborns. MCHN are in an ideal position to identify and support women experiencing IPV, or refer them to specialist family violence services. Evidence for IPV screening in primary health care is inconclusive to date. The Victorian government recently required nurses to screen all mothers when bab

Integration of research and nursing experiential learning: a case study.

Teaching research to undergraduates has it own challenges and involving undergraduates in research practical experience is just one of those challenges. As nursing students are in the process of becoming professional nurses, knowledge and skills in research are specific outcomes of the curriculum. One of the outcomes of the B Tech Nursing Science programme offered by the Tshwane University of Technology states that for the baccalaureate nursing programme include analysis, interpretation and utilisation of a range of research findings in scientific nursing and midwifery care as well as the deve

Long-term catheter use in the community.

This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of long-term urinary catheters and explores patients' attitudes to catheterisation. The author argues that, with careful selection of equipment, long-term catheterisation can be acceptable to patients and a useful method of management for people whose lives are severely restricted by incontinence.

Reducing the cost of lower limb wound management through industry partnership and staff education.

Following an audit of practice in North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT), obstacles in the management of lower limb conditions were identified. An appraisal of needs in terms of skills and theory updates for staff led to a fixed-term 'honorary contract' between the trust and a wound-care company to facilitate a rolling programme of education, to upskill staff in terms of assessment and treatment, and develop standardised care pathways. After 3 months, a repeated practice audit revealed a reduction in nurse contact hours of 1156 hours. The partnership with industry proved to be beneficial a

[Mobbing--special reference to the nursing profession].

INTRODUCTION: Heinz Leymann defined this phenomenon as a hostile and unethical communication. In his definition Leymann points out that the distinction between "conflict" and "mobbing" does not focus on what is done or how it is done, but rather on the frequency and duration of whatever is done. The exposure to the strain of mobbing begins to result in psychiatrically or psychosomatically pathological conditions due to the accumulation of negative emotions. Leyman emphasizes four main factors which cause harrasment in the workplace: lack of clarity of goals in work, inadequate management, vict

An overview of swearing and its impact on mental health nursing practice.

Swearing is a subject largely ignored in academic circles but impossible to ignore in the workplace. Nurses encounter swearing from patients and their carers, staff and managers and use swearwords in communication with each other. Language is the major tool of the mental health nurse and swearing an aspect of language frequently used in situations of intense emotion. This paper provides an overview of the historical, legal and cultural aspects of swearing in an Australian context in order to assist nurses in their practice.

Multilevel Determinants of Tuberculosis Treatment Interruption in Rural South Africa: Insights from Primary Healthcare Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge globally, particularly in high-burden countries such as South Africa. Treatment interruption is a critical barrier to effective TB control, contributing to poor treatment outcomes, increased risk of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), and continued community transmission. Understanding the determinants of treatment interruption in rural healthcare settings is essential for strengthening TB programme implementation. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the factors influencing TB treatment interruption from the per

Management of Chronic Nonbacterial Prostatitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome in the Adult Male Patient with Comorbid Conditions.

Faith community nurses often counsel patients regarding illness management and are in a unique position to provide support to those facing multiple illnesses. When faced with multiple illnesses, men with urologic problems commonly do not mention them at routine exams, yet older patients might ask a trusted faith community nurse about urological concerns such as prostatitis. The National Institutes of Health developed a new classification structure for prostatitis in the 1990s, combining two types of prostate conditions into a new category. Due to disease complexity, treatments combining both p

Community based integrated wound care: Results of a pilot formative research conducted in Benin and Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa.

Appropriate treatment of chronic wounds is priority in the management of Neglected Tropical Skin Diseases (NTSDs) and non-communicable diseases. We describe an integrated, community-based wound care pilot project carried out in Benin and Cote d'Ivoire that entailed both outreach education and evidence based wound care training for nurses staffing rural clinics. This research was carried out by a transdisciplinary research. Following the collection of baseline data on wound care at home and in clinics, an innovative pilot project was developed based on a critical assessment of baseline data in
