Skin perfusion pressure in lower extremities at haemodialysis initiation is associated with 1-year mortality and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Skin perfusion pressure (SPP) is a noninvasively obtained and useful measurement for assessing peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Decreased SPP in lower extremities is associated with poor survival in maintenance haemodialysis (HD) patients. Nevertheless, the prognostic significance of SPP at HD initiation has not been determined. We investigated the relation between SPP and death or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in incident HD patients. METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from patients with SPP measurements taken by dialysis nurses at HD initiation during 2020-2023. Then

Agitation Prevalence in People With Dementia in Australian Residential Aged Care Facilities: Findings From Machine Learning of Electronic Health Records.

Using a suite of artificial intelligence technologies, the current study sought to determine the prevalence of agitated behaviors in people with dementia in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) in Australia. Computerized natural language processing allowed extraction of agitation instances from the free-text nursing progress notes, a component of electronic health records in RACFs. In total, 59 observable agitated behaviors were found. No difference was found in dementia prevalence between female and male clients (44.1%), across metropolitan and regional facilities (42.1% [SD = 17.9%]), or

[Homecare Support for Patients with Foot Ulcers Rejecting Lower Limb Amputations: Effects of Visiting Nursing].

The patient, a 60-year-old male with a combination of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, was hospitalized for peripheral arterial disease and recommended as a candidate for lower limb amputation after vascular IVR. The patient rejected this recommendation and left the hospital. The toes of both feet turned black and became mummified, which resulted in the patient being unable to walk at home and being prescribed narcotics for the pain. The patient requested home nursing where he was provided with lower limb wound care and rehabilitation to improve lower limb muscle strength together by visiti

Partial denture swallowed by patient with dementia.

PURPOSE: To present a rare case of a male dementia patient in a nursing home who swallowed a partial denture which lodged in the airway. METHODS: During breakfast, a patient with moderate dementia experienced a sore throat, labored breathing, and difficulty swallowing. Uncertainty about the cause of these problems was exacerbated by the patient's cognitive losses, his reduced oro-motor function, and awareness of caregivers that the possible involvement of a denture of this size was unlikely. At the beginning of the third day, he developed a low-grade fever and was placed on antibiotics. A che

Postnatal dietary choline supplementation alters behavior in a mouse model of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a neurodevelopmental disorder primarily affecting females, is accompanied by behavioral and neuropathological abnormalities and decreases in brain cholinergic markers. Because the cholinergic system is associated with cognitive and motor functions, cholinergic deficits in RTT may underlie some of the behavioral abnormalities. In rodents, increased choline availability during development enhances transmission at cholinergic synapses and improves behavioral performance throughout life. We examined whether choline supplementation of nursing dams would attenuate deficits in Me

Intermittent urethral catheterization in the elderly.

Thirty-five elderly patients receiving intermittent urethral catheterization in a Veterans Administration Hospital and attached nursing home care unit were prospectively studied for development of bacteriuria and/or urinary tract infection. Thirty-one of the 35 patients (88.6%) developed urinary tract colonization. The mean time from initiation of catheterization to development of colonization was 5.7 +/- 1.3 days. Persistent bacteriuria with one or several different microorganisms developed in 17 patients. The most common colonizing organisms were coagulase negative staphylococci, Klebsiella

Consideration of sexually transmitted infections in the differential diagnosis: Case studies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The rates of many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have increased in recent years. Many health care professionals miss these potential diagnoses in clinical practice. METHODS: Two case studies are presented, one an adult female with dysuria; the other an adult male with a rash. Appropriate differential diagnoses and relevant history, examination, and investigation details are discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Not all dysuria signifies a urinary tract infection. Although most rashes are not syphilis or HIV, it is important to rule out these etiologies for rashes in adults

Acanthus Condom Catheter: A Reusable and Adjustable Silicone Male External Catheter With Pressure-Sensitive Silicone Adhesive for Urinary Drainage.

Condom catheters are also called external urinary collection devices to collect urine and monitor urine output in hospitalized and other patients with urinary incontinence. They play an important role in reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections by using invasive indwelling catheters that are placed inside the bladder. Currently, male external catheters come with or without adhesives. Major problems with current condom catheters are finding the right size to fit, excessive slippage needing to replace too many, urine leak, skin irritation, and damage. In some cases, it's a common pr

Effects of a serious game on undergraduate nursing students' learning motivation, engagement and outcomes in community nursing home visit education: A cluster quasi-experimental study.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of the serious game 'Home Visit Navigator' on undergraduate nursing students' motivation, engagement and learning outcomes during home-visit training. BACKGROUND: Some challenges of traditional community-nursing home-visit education include uneven practical resources, lack of spatial context in textual case studies and a disjunction between theory and practice, affecting student engagement and learning effectiveness. Although serious games enhance engagement, reduce cognitive load and improve learning outcomes, their application in community nursing home-visit teac

Sexuality in the baccalaureate nursing curriculum.

One hundred and fifty-one baccalaureate nursing programs responded to a survey indicating how and to what extent concepts of human sexuality were incorporated into the nursing curricula. A majority of programs provided for all topic areas listed on the questionnaire with those related to reproduction being most prevalent in the curricula. Most respondents believed that baccalaureate graduates should be able to provide sex education for youth, counsel regarding healthy sex function, minimize the incidence of sexual dysfunction by educating adults, and counsel clients regarding sexual problems a

Implementing trauma-informed educational practices in an online family nurse practitioner course: Lessons learned from a pilot study.

Family Nurse Practitioner students often navigate graduate education while managing personal, professional, and emotional stressors. Many enter programs with histories of trauma, which may impair learning and performance in rigid, high-stakes academic environments. This pilot study explored the feasibility and perceived impact of implementing trauma-informed educational practices (TIEP) in an asynchronous Family Nurse Practitioner course using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's six principles to trauma-informed care as a framework. A mixed methods design was used w

Evaluation of using a graphic novel Vivian in nursing curriculum from the perspectives of nurse educators: a three-country qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Graphic novels - full-length stories published in comic-strip format are a proven method for putting student nurses 'into the shoes' of health service users and offer nurse educators an alternative to traditional modes of instruction. Their use can support the teaching of palliative care related topics, which remains a challenge in nurse education. This study aimed to explore the views and perspectives of nurse educators about how the graphic novel Vivian could be used to prepare undergraduate nursing students for palliative care and beyond. METHODS: Focus groups and individual in
