Bone health in pediatric patients with neurological disorders.

Patients with neurological disorders are at high risk of developing osteoporosis, as they possess multiple risk factors leading to low bone mineral density. Such factors include inactivity, decreased exposure to sunlight, poor nutrition, and the use of medication or treatment that can cause lower bone mineral density such as antiepileptic drugs, ketogenic diet, and glucocorticoids. In this article, mechanisms involved in altered bone health in children with neurological disorders and management for patients with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy regarding bone health ar

[Development of lipids and carbohydrates metabolism disorders caused by drinkable water with high content of chlorine organic compounds].

Evaluation of effects caused by environmental peroral exposure to chlorine organic compounds revealed that individuals with AG variation of HTR2A gene are a community with increased sensitivity to chloroform and a risk group for lipid and carbohydrates metabolism disorders. Individual risk of endocrine disorders (ICD: E67.8 excessive nutrition and E66.0 obesity) in these individuals is higher than in general population exposed to chloroform at residence (HQ1.72). Serum serotonin level, that is functionally connected with HTR2A gene, is 1.3 times lower vs. the reference group value.

Nutritional factors required for alcoholic liver disease in rats.

Decades ago it was suggested that nutritional factors are important in the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). However, several models of experimental alcoholism considered that the diets fed to animals were nutritionally adequate, complete and balanced. Therefore, a concept prevailed that the effects observed were due to alcohol per se and that they occurred despite a nutritionally adequate status in the animal. Examination of various models revealed that animals were malnourished because they ingested reduced levels of macro- and micronutrients. Furthermore, they consumed only smal

[Nutritional status and heart valve surgery: response to surgical aggression].

Malnutrition is a condition of increased risk for surgical patients, yet incompletely understood. Its role in the prognosis of neoplastic, gastrointestinal and infective disease undergoing surgery is now better underlined; unfortunately the same attention is still lacking for the majority of cardiac diseases. Nowadays many methods are at hand for evaluation of nutritional status, and it is possible to restore the correct condition before surgery by various techniques of artificial nutrition. Here the authors consider the possibility of discovery and evaluation of various hidden conditions of m

Can protein-calorie malnutrition cause dysphagia?

Nutrient deprivation has previously been shown to cause alterations in muscle and nerve function. Although an effect has never been studied in the neuromusculature of deglutition, the authors argue that an effect is likely. The proposed result is an increase in swallowing impairment in dysphagic individuals and associated risk of aspiration. Research studying the relationship between malnutrition and dysphagia is needed to verify clinical significance. Until controlled studies are completed, the authors suggest alternative alimentation in repleting severely malnourished dysphagic patients prio

Adjuvant nutritional support for patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure reduce the risk of clinical complications.

BACKGROUND: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) patients face high risks of nutritional risk and clinical complications, but whether adjuvant nutritional support reduces adverse complications remains unclear. METHODS: This study included 6,097 hospitalized ACLF patients at West China Hospital. The Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS 2002) was used to assess the nutritional risk of the patients. Additional personalized enteral or parenteral nutrition was provided. The Kruskal-Wallis test and chi-square test compared continuous and categorical variables. Multivariate logistic regression analyzed od

Gluten-free grains: Importance, processing and its effect on quality of gluten-free products.

Gluten-enteropathy affects a significant number of people, making gluten a major concern in the food industry. With medical advancements, the diagnosis of allergies is becoming easier, and people who are allergic to gluten are recommended a complete gluten-free diet. Since wheat provides a major part of the energy and nutrition in the diet, its elimination affects nutrition intake of allergic population. Food scientists are working to formulate products using protein-rich gluten-free grains with quality attributes at par with gluten-containing products. Focused research has been done to provid

[Parenteral nutrition in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation].

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a sophisticated procedure used in the treatment of solid tumors, haematological diseases and autoimmune disorders, which were characterized by an extremely poor prognosis only a few years earlier. Thousands of patients receive high-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy around the world every year in order to treat these diseases. Therapy can induce aggressive changes associated with multiple organ failure, which is usually reversible, that can lead to special nutritional and metabolic conditions. Artificial nutrition, total parenteral nutrition i

Syndromes associated with nutritional deficiency and excess.

Normal functioning of the human body requires a balance between nutritional intake and metabolism, and imbalances manifest as nutritional deficiencies or excess. Nutritional deficiency states are associated with social factors (war, poverty, famine, and food fads), medical illnesses with malabsorption (such as Crohn disease, cystic fibrosis, and after bariatric surgery), psychiatric illnesses (eating disorders, autism, alcoholism), and medications. Nutritional excess states result from inadvertent or intentional excessive intake. Cutaneous manifestations of nutritional imbalance can herald oth

Pediatric feeding and swallowing rehabilitation: An overview.

Children with neurological disabilities frequently have problems with feeding and swallowing. Such problems have a significant impact on the health and well-being of these children and their families. The primary aims in the rehabilitation of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders are focused on supporting growth, nutrition and hydration, the development of feeding activities, and ensuring safe swallowing with the aim of preventing choking and aspiration pneumonia. Pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders can be divided into four groups: transient, developmental, chronic or progressive.T

A Qualitative Exploration of Sports Dietitians' Incorporation of Intuitive Eating when Working with Athletes with and without Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating Habits.

Purpose: Athletes have a higher prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) and disordered eating (DE) than the general population. Intuitive eating (IE) is a nutrition intervention that is negatively associated with DE, yet research is limited on how dietitians incorporate IE into recommendations for athletes. This study examined Sports Dietitians' beliefs about incorporating IE into nutrition counselling. Results: Most participants incorporate IE into practice. They felt challenge the food police is the most effective principle of IE for athletes, along with reject the diet mentality and respect yo

Novel strategies for medical management of obesity: mechanisms, clinical implications, and societal impacts-a report from the 25th Annual Harvard Nutrition Obesity Symposium.

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease with a multifactorial etiology. Over the past 5 y, obesity medicine has entered a new era with the advent of novel, game-changing pharmacotherapies that achieve weight loss exceeding 15%-20%. Beyond weight loss, these powerful therapies offer additional benefits, such as cardiovascular improvements. These novel agents, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, work by reducing appetite, slowing gastric emptying, and increasing feelings of fullness. Recent work also points out the potential role of these medications for other medical conditions,

Management of mineral supplementation programs for cow-calf operations.

Wasting diseases, hair loss, depigmented hair, skin disorders, noninfectious abortion, diarrhea, loss of appetite, bone abnormalities, tetany, low fertility, and pica have all been attributed to dietary mineral deficiencies or excesses in beef cattle diets. When discussing the mineral nutrition of beef cattle, it is common to focus on readily observable problems such as these. It is a fact, however, that the probability of a particular beef operation ever encountering one of these classical symptoms of deficiency or excess is vanishingly small. Most economic losses associated with mineral nutr

[Recent advances in the nutritional management of pediatric surgical patients].

The prognosis of pediatric surgical patients is significantly improved by perioperative nutritional support. However, the morbidity and mortality rates from intestinal failure, including short gut syndrome and allied disorders of Hirschsprung's disease, remain high. Recent advance in nutrition support focus on the management of intestinal failure. A central venous catheter is commonly used for long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in intestinal failure, although the incidence of catheter-related complications is still high. A nutrition support team approach might reduce such complications
