Nutritional status of alcoholic patients: it's possible relationship to alcoholic liver damage.

This study was performed to look for a possible relationship between the nutritional status and the presence of liver damage in alcoholic patients. One hundred chronic alcoholics admitted for treatment to the Alcoholism Ward, without clinical signs of liver failure, were studied. In 84, anthropometric nutritional indexes, liver function tests, and a liver biopsy were performed; in 69 patients a dietary survey was obtained. A dietary imbalance was observed in the total group; 65% of ingested calories were derived from ethanol. The intake of proteins, vitamins, and minerals was below the RDA, NA…

Biochemical indices of nutritional status in maternal, cord, and early neonatal blood.

The nutritional status of 556 infants born in good health was measured by selected biochemical parameters in maternal venous blood, in mixed arteriovenous cord blood at delivery, and in infant's capillary blood collected at 5 days. The determinations indicating nutritional status were: Hb, hematocrit, protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid, iron, calcium and magnesium. In maternal venous blood, a significant number of women were found to be deficient; 3.4% had Hb below 9.5 g/dl; 6.1% had hematocrit less than 30%; 4.0% had total protein below 5.5 g/dl; 7.0% had vi…

The Impact of Nutrition Education Based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model on Improving the Nutritional Status and Growth Status of 7-12-Year-Old Malnourished Children in Kermanshah.

Malnutrition significantly affects children's health and social well-being, leading to growth disorders, such as underweight and short stature. This study investigated the impact of nutrition education based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model and the optimal food basket recommended by the Ministry of Health on the growth status and dietary intake of malnourished children aged 7 to 12 years. A controlled trial was conducted with 254 malnourished children in Kermanshah, randomly divided into intervention (127) and control groups. Data were collected at three intervals: before, 6, and 12 weeks after th

Nutritional status is linked to muscle strength and perceived function in adults with muscular dystrophy: evidence for targeted nutritional interventions.

Muscular dystrophy (MD) encompasses inherited myopathies characterised by progressive skeletal and cardiac muscle degeneration, chronic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. While emerging therapies show pre-clinical promise, few reach clinical translation, highlighting the need for supportive interventions to improve function and quality of life (QoL). Nutritional strategies may offer such benefits; however, limited data exist characterising diet in MD or associations with functional outcomes. This study assessed diet, nutritional status and associations with muscle strength, function and Q…

Micronutrient status in children aged 6-59 months with severe wasting and/or nutritional edema: implications for nutritional rehabilitation formulations.

Undernutrition remains a global struggle and is associated with almost 45% of deaths in children younger than 5 years. Despite advances in management of severe wasting (though less so for nutritional edema), full and sustained recovery remains elusive. Children with severe wasting and/or nutritional edema (also commonly referred to as severe acute malnutrition and part of the umbrella term "severe malnutrition") continue to have a high mortality rate. This suggests a likely multifactorial etiology that may include micronutrient deficiency. Micronutrients are currently provided in therapeutic f

Infant iodine status and associations with maternal iodine nutrition, breast-feeding status and thyroid function.

Adequate iodine nutrition during infancy is required for normal thyroid function and, subsequently, brain development. However, data on infant iodine status in the first year of life are scarce. This study aimed to describe infant iodine status and further explore its associations with maternal iodine nutrition, breast-feeding status and thyroid function. In this cohort study, 113 infants were followed up at ages 3, 6 and 11 months in Norway. Infant and maternal urinary iodine concentration (UIC), maternal iodine intake, breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC), breast-feeding status and infant

Coronavirus Disease 19 from the Perspective of Ageing with Focus on Nutritional Status and Nutrition Management-A Narrative Review.

The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (COVID-19) has hit older adults harder due to a combination of age-related immunological and metabolic alterations. The aim of this review was to analyze the COVID-19 literature with respect to nutritional status and nutrition management in older adults. No studies only on people aged 65+ years were found, and documentation on those 80+ was rare. Age was found to be strongly associated with worse outcomes, and with poor nutritional status. Prevalence of malnutrition was high among severely and critically ill patients. The studies found a …

Enteral nutrition via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and nutritional status of patients: five-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Since it was described in 1980, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has been a widely used method for insertion of a gastrostomy tube in patients who are unable to swallow or maintain adequate nutrition. The aim of the present paper was to determine the complications of PEG insertion and to study pre- and post-procedural nutritional status. METHODS: During the period of March 1999-September 2004, placement of PEG tube was performed in 85 patients (22 women and 63 men). Patient nutritional status was assessed before and after PEG insertion via anthropometric measurements. RE…

Parenteral and enteral nutrition and the enterocutaneous fistula treatment. I. Investigations on fistula output, nutritional status complications.

Prospective evaluation were made of 45 patients with postoperative small bowel fistulas treated with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and enteral nutrition (EN) between 1971-1988. The administration of TPN in the early treatment of enteric fistulas decreased the mean fistula output significantly (p < 0.05-0.001) and provided an effective tool in the control of high-output fistulas. The electrolyte contents of different fistula secretions were unchanged and the losses through the fistulas depended on the daily output. In patients with high-output fistulas acid-base balance disturbances had to b

The influence of refined enteral nutrition intervention on nutritional status and feeding intolerance in critically ill stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill stroke patients frequently experience dysphagia, posing challenges to adequate nutrient intake. Furthermore, these patients often remain in a prolonged state of high stress, hypermetabolism, and reduced immunity. While early enteral nutritional support is crucial, feeding intolerance remains a prevalent issue. This study evaluates the real-world impact of a refined enteral nutrition (EN) intervention on EN outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a refined enteral nutrition intervention on nutritional status and feeding intolerance in critically ill stroke …
