The incidence of cumulative trauma disorder (CTD) has become noteworthy in plants that rely on automated production. This rise was evident in an Ohio poultry company. The purpose of this study was to develop a screening tool to detect employees who might be at risk of sustaining a CTD injury and to identify trends of CTD at specific workstations. Thirty-five employees at three workstations completed a questionnaire and underwent a physical examination. Blastomycosis is a rare endemic fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. It is more likely to occur in persons living in areas of the United States and Canada, which border the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys and the Great Lakes region. An outbreak of diarrhea in neonatal lambs occurred on a sheep farm in northern Ohio. Diarrhea commenced as early as 1 week of age and lasted for about 3-4 days. Although 100% of the newborn lambs were affected, most had recovered by 3 weeks of age. Cryptosporidium infection appeared to be the cause of diarrhea. Faecal samples were collected weekly over a 3 month period from 0- to 20-week-old calves on an Ohio dairy farm, and examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts by a quantitative direct immunofluorescence assay. This study examines the indications for performing the Kleihauer-Betke (KB) test and makes recommendations for its use. Results of 523 KB tests performed during 1993 at our hospital (Cleveland, Ohio) are reviewed in conjunction with surgical pathology reports of placental findings, obstetric records, and toxicology results. During the last three decades, 2,4117 splenectomies have been performed at The Ohio State University Hospital. Indications for splenectomy include hypersplenism, incidental to other abdominal procedures, trauma, Hodgkin's staging, and other splenic disease.
