St. Jacobs Oil started out as a patent medicine pain remedy in the last third of the 19th century. About 40 years prior to implementation of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, this "cure" was promoted as The Great Remedy for Pain of "Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Backache, Headache, Toothache, Sprains, Bruises, etc." This paper follows the history of St. Jacobs Oil starting with its development by August Vogeler family in Baltimore, Maryland.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sandalwood oil for cutaneous viral warts caused by human papillomavirus. Sandalwood oil was applied topically twice daily for 12 weeks to cutaneous warts on any area of the body. Data collected at each visit included measurement of wart size, photograph of the warts, and documentation of treatment compliance and any adverse reactions. The root and leaf essential oils, present in trace amounts in Amsonia illustris Woods. (Apocynaceae), were isolated by steam distillation and their chemical constituents identified by GC-FID and GC-MS. More than 80% of the thirty volatile compounds in the leaf oil were identified, the major constituents being mainly sesquiterpenes like a-humulene (14.5%), beta-caryophyllene (12.4%) and guaiol (11.6%). The volatile ingredients of the root oil were pinocampheol, methyl salicylate, (2E,4E)- decadienal, eugenol and trans-isoeugenol.
