[Olfactory bulbs aplasia as a reason of isolated congenital anosmia in a 9-year-old child (clinical case)].

Complaints about olfactory disorders in children are extremely rare. This article describes a case of a 9-year-old girl who visited an otorhinolaryngologist due to the absence of smell perception. The examination results revealed congenital isolated anosmia caused by the absence of olfactory bulbs. The causes of congenital anosmia (both syndromic and isolated) are discuss.

Evaluation of olfactory bulb volume and insular cortex area in children with adenoid hypertrophy: A retrospective MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, central and peripheral olfactory areas were examined in patients with adenoid hypertrophy; Based on the idea that adenoid hypertrophy may cause smell impairment, its effect on olfactory bulb volumes and insular cortex areas was evaluated. METHODS: This retrospective study included 60 male and 61 female patients who had Cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and had no comorbidities. In MRI measurements, patients with adenoid tissue to nasopharyngeal air column ratio >%50 were designated as the patient group with adenoid hypertrophy (25 boys, 22 girls) (Group 1), a…

Anatomy and Microsurgical Relevance of the Outer Arachnoid Envelope around the Olfactory Bulb Based on Endoscopic Cadaveric Observations.

BACKGROUND: There is high risk of injury to the olfactory tract and olfactory bulb during surgery of the anterior cranial fossa. The goal of this study was to describe the outer arachnoid envelope around the olfactory bulb, which plays a significant role in approach-related injury of the nerve. METHODS: A total of 20 fresh human cadaveric heads were examined. Five cadaveric heads were used to describe a gross overview of the topographic anatomy of the outer arachnoid cover of the olfactory bulb. In 15 cadaveric heads, endoscopic surgical approaches were performed to examine the in situ undisr…

A GnRH neuronal population in the olfactory bulb translates socially relevant odors into reproductive behavior in male mice.

Hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons regulate fertility and integrate hormonal status with environmental cues to ensure reproductive success. Here we show that GnRH neurons in the olfactory bulb (GnRHOB) of adult mice can mediate social recognition. Specifically, we show that GnRHOB neurons extend neurites into the vomeronasal organ and olfactory epithelium and project to the median eminence. GnRHOB neurons in males express vomeronasal and olfactory receptors, are activated by female odors and mediate gonadotropin release in response to female urine. Male preference for f…

Early in vivo Effects of the Human Mutant Amyloid-β Protein Precursor (hAβPPSwInd) on the Mouse Olfactory Bulb.

The amyloid-β protein precursor (AβPP) has long been linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using J20 mice, which express human AβPP with Swedish and Indiana mutations, we studied early pathological changes in the olfactory bulb. The presence of AβPP/amyloid-β (Aβ) was examined in mice aged 3 months (before the onset of hippocampal Aβ deposition) and over 5 months (when hippocampal Aβ deposits are present). The number of neurons, non-neurons, and proliferating cells was assessed using the isotropic fractionator method. Our results demonstrate that although AβPP is overexpressed in some of the mit…

Neuroanatomical relationships between FMRFamide-immunoreactive components of the nervus terminalis and the topology of olfactory bulbs in teleost fish.

The nervus terminalis (NT) is the most anterior of the vertebrate cranial nerves. In teleost fish, the NT runs across all olfactory components and shows high morphological variability within this taxon. We compare the anatomical distribution, average number and size of the FMRFamide-immunoreactive (ir) NT cells of fourteen teleost species with different positions of olfactory bulbs (OBs) with respect to the ventral telencephalic area. Based on the topology of the OBs, three different neuroanatomical organizations of the telencephalon can be defined, viz., fish having sessile (Type I), pseudose…

Characterization of in utero valproic acid mouse model of autism by local field potential in the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb.

Valproic acid (VPA) mouse model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been characterized mostly by impaired ultrasonic vocalization, poor sociability and increased repetitive self-grooming behavior. However, its neural signaling remained unknown. This study investigated the local field potentials (LFPs) in the dorsal hippocampal CA1 and the olfactory bulb while animals exploring a novel open field. VPA was administered at gestational day 13. The results demonstrated three core features of ASD in male offspring. However, there was no difference in Y-maze performance and locomotor activity. Anal…

Capillaries in the olfactory bulb but not the cortex are highly susceptible to virus-induced vascular leak and promote viral neuroinvasion.

Viral neuroinvasion is a critical step in the pathogenesis of viral encephalitis. Multiple mechanisms of neuroinvasion have been identified, but their relative contribution to central nervous system (CNS) infection remains unclear for many viruses. In this study, we examined neuroinvasion of the mosquito-borne bunyavirus La Crosse (LACV), the leading cause of pediatric viral encephalitis in the USA. We found that the olfactory bulb (OB) and tract were the initial areas of CNS virus infection in mice. Removal of the OB reduced the incidence of LACV-induced disease demonstrating the importance o…

Distinct domanial and lamellar distribution of clustered lipofuscin granules in microglia in the main olfactory bulb of young mice.

Lipofuscin granules are generally considered as age-pigment. However, we encountered numerous large irregular clusters of lipofuscin granules in the olfactory nerve layer and glomerular layer of the main olfactory bulb (MOB) of young adult and even juvenile mice of C57BL/6J strain. Those numerous autofluorescent irregular lipofuscin granules were contained in the cytoplasm of microglial cells. Importantly they showed a prominent pattern of distribution; that is, they were rather restricted to the OCAM positive ventro-lateral domain (V-domain) of the MOB but few in the OCAM negative dorso-media…

Subdivision of the accessory olfactory bulb in the Japanese common toad, Bufo japonicus, revealed by lectin histochemical analysis.

Lectin binding patterns in the olfactory bulb of the Japanese common toad, Bufo japonicus, were examined using 21 types of lectin. Ten out of 21 lectins, WGA, s-WGA, LEL, STL, DBA, VVA, SJA, RCA-I, PNA, and PHA-L, stained the olfactory nerve, the glomeruli in the main olfactory bulb (MOB), the vomeronasal nerve, and the glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). The binding patterns of LEL, STL, DBA, and PHA-L subdivided AOB glomeruli into rostral and caudal regions, where LEL, STL, and DBA stained the rostral region more intensely than the caudal region, and PHA-L had the opposite effec…

Postembryonic changes in the structure of the olfactory bulb of the chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) across its life history.

Juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) memorize odors characteristic of their natal stream, then use these imprinted olfactory cues to return to that same stream years later as sexually mature adults. In a preliminary effort to identify neuroanatomical changes in the salmon olfactory system that may underlie these behavioral capabilities, the structure of the olfactory bulb (OB) was studied at three developmental periods across the life history: in early juvenile development (0.1-4 months of age), in late juvenile development (11-16 months), and as spawning adults (48 months). Usin…

The neurite growth promoting protease nexin 1 in glial cells of the olfactory bulb of the gerbil: an ultrastructural study.

The glia-derived serine protease inhibitor and neurite outgrowth promoter protease nexin-1 (PN-1) is expressed in Schwann cell precursors and astroblasts during embryogenesis. In the adult nervous system, PN-1 persists in the Schwann cells and olfactory glia only. Light-microscopic immunohistochemistry has revealed the presence of PN-1 in the olfactory mucosa and in the nerve fiber layer of the olfactory bulb. The present electron-microscopic study of the gerbil olfactory bulb confirms the occurrence of PN-1 in ensheathing cells of the olfactory nerve fiber layer, a special type of glia which …

Cholinergic innervation of the main and the accessory olfactory bulbs of the rat as revealed by a monoclonal antibody against choline acetyltransferase.

The main and accessory olfactory bulbs (MOB and AOB) of the rat were immunohistochemically stained with a monoclonal antibody against choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in order to know the difference in the distribution patterns of cholinergic fibers between these two structures. A few ChAT-immunoreactive cell bodies were found in the superficial and middle parts of the external plexiform layer (EPL) of the MOB, in the granule cell layer (GCL) of the MOB, and in the GCL of the AOB. The frequency in appearance of these cells was 0.9 cells/section in the MOB and 0.3 cells/section in the AOB. Whil…

Acetylcholinesterase activity in the developing olfactory bulb: a biochemical study on normal maturation and the influence of peripheral and central connections.

In the newborn rat olfactory bulb (OB), the specific activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is about 20% of the adult value. During postnatal development, the specific activity remains unchanged until day 10; a growth spurt of 5X is observed between days 10 and 25, when adult values (90 nmoles ACh/min/mg protein; 6 nmol/min/mg wet wt.) are reached. However, total activity shows continuous increase slowly at first and rapidly between days 10 to 30, reaching a plateau by day 60. Between birth to day 60 total activity increases 65X. To determine the influence of peripheral and central connection…

Synaptic excitatory and inhibitory interactions at distal dendritic sites on mitral cells in the isolated turtle olfactory bulb.

The olfactory nerves terminate exclusively on the distal dendritic tufts of mitral cells in the olfactory bulb, which makes this a favorable model for analysis of synaptic responses in distal dendrites. Intracellular recordings of responses to olfactory nerve volleys have been obtained in the isolated turtle olfactory bulb. Single mitral cells usually responded with excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) to volleys in two different bundles, indicating convergence from separate receptor neuron populations. Paired volleys revealed long-lasting inhibition of a test EPSP by a conditioning voll…

Golgi, electron-microscopic and combined Golgi-electron-microscopic studies of the mitral cells in the goldfish olfactory bulb.

The local neuronal circuitry of goldfish olfactory bulb was analyzed in Golgi preparations combining light- and electron-microscopy, as well as in routinely prepared ultrastructural preparations. Mitral cells were identified with the light-microscope in Golgi-impregnated thick sections according to the following criteria: (1) cell bodies were distributed irregularly in a wide layer between 100 and 200 micrometer from the surface, (2) cell bodies were larger than other neurons (10-20 micrometer in diameter), and (3) the dendrites were directed toward the superficially-located olfactory nerve la…
