Neuroanatomical and Neurocognitive Differences Between the Executive Functions in Child Sexual Offenders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Studies on executive functions in child sex offenders relate their findings to the presence of pedophilia, but they are not able to distinguish between paraphilia and abuse. It is therefore this lack of a distinction that leads us to complement the existing information. Thus, the purpose of this review is to find all available evidence on the neurocognitive and neuroanatomical differences in executive functions among pedophilic and non-pedophilic child sex offenders, and non-offender pedophiles. METHODS: The present review, in accordance with the PRISMA statement, ran a

The incidence, characteristics, and complications of pregnant women who delivered stillbirths under different child policies in central China.

BACKGROUND: China's evolving fertility policies (one-child to three-child) have shaped maternal and neonatal outcomes, but specific gaps in stillbirth epidemiology during policy transitions. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 721,860 singleton pregnancies in 2011-2023, from 18 maternal near-miss surveillance hospitals in Hunan. Stillbirth rates were assessed across four policy periods: one-child (2011-2013), partial two-child (2013-2015), universal two-child (2016-2020), and three-child (2021-2023). Multivariable logistic regression identified risk factors, adjusting for fertil

A randomized controlled trial of consensus-based child abuse case management.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effects of expert-assisted child abuse and neglect case management in the German child welfare and healthcare system as perceived by the case workers themselves. METHODS: Case workers with different professions (social workers, counselors, clinic-based and office-based psychotherapists, and physicians) participated in the study. They were responsible for 80 child protection cases which were enrolled for the study and randomly assigned either to expert-assisted case management or to case management as usual. The sample represented a broad range of child prot

Countdown to 2015: tracking donor assistance to maternal, newborn, and child health.

BACKGROUND: Timely reliable data on aid flows to maternal, newborn, and child health are essential for assessing the adequacy of current levels of funding, and to promote accountability among donors for attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for child and maternal health. We provide global estimates of official development assistance (ODA) to maternal, newborn, and child health in 2003 and 2004, drawing on data reported by high-income donor countries and aid agencies to the Organisation for Economic Development and Cooperation. METHODS: ODA was tracked on a project-by-project b

Familial aggregation of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA).

Agenesis of maxillary lateral incisors and mandibular second premolars is the most frequent form of hypodontia. Its prevalence varies across population from 0.8% to 4.5%. Genetic aberrations and environmental factors may cause agenesis of one or more teeth. The management of child having such a problem is very important since diastema in teeth especially in upper anteriors not only affects child's physical appearance but also its psychological development as the child wants to look like other children. In this article is presented a case of non-syndromic agenesis of maxillary lateral incisors

[Münchausen syndrome by proxy].

Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP), is a psychiatric disorder, a particular form of child abuse. An impaired emotional relationship exists mainly between the mother and her child. According to the variety of victims' symptoms, all medicine doctors may deal with this syndrome in every day clinical practice. Still insufficient knowledge about the syndrome and its' rare consideration in the differential diagnosis result in only severe, potentially lethal cases recognition. For many years the rest remains a source of a long-term physical and mental injuries in victims. About 30 years from the fir

Sequence analysis reveals a beta-thalassaemia mutation in the DNA of skeletal remains from the archaeological site of Akhziv, Israel.

beta-Thalassaemia is manifested by severe anaemia and extensive bone pathology. Similar pathology may also result from other forms of anaemia. To clarify the precise cause, we performed DNA analyses on archaeological remains of a child with severe bone pathology. We found homozygosity for frameshift in codon 8 of beta-globin, causing a beta-null phenotype. Paradoxically, the child died when eight years old, whereas such patients are transfusion dependent from early infancy. An infrequent polymorphic marker in the child's DNA, and information from present-day patients, indicated that ameliorati

Elective mutism: report of a case successfully treated by a family doctor.

Elective mutism is a rare psychological disorder of multiple etiology, wherein intellectually normal, nonpsychotic children, who can talk, remain silent with all individuals except a small group of intimate relatives and peers. Certain characteristics and relationship patterns are typically found in the family of the affected child. This report details elective mutism in a young girl in the author's family medicine practice and the treatment attempted by different therapists over a period of several years. Only when all other treatment had failed did the author, by default, accept responsibili

Child abuse and physical punishment of children in Finland.

This study looks at child abuse as a part of family violence and includes a literature review of the previous Finnish studies on child abuse. The data of the study comes from a poll conducted in Finland in the autumn of 1981 of 530 of the Finnish population older than 14 years of age: 3% of respondents had observed physical violence towards small children and 1% towards teenagers; 44% of the respondents were of the opinion that physical punishment of children was needed at least on certain occasions. In Sweden the corresponding percentage was only 26. The majority of Finns (60%), however, was

Home and Neighborhood Food Environment Measures and Weight-for-Age z-Scores Among Children Aged 1-5 Years: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity is prevalent in the United States, and although food environments (FEs) may be related to child weight, findings remain inconsistent. This study evaluated neighborhood and home FEs' associations with children's weight and explored interactive effects of the neighborhood and home FEs on child weight. We hypothesized that children exposed to less healthy neighborhood and home FEs would have higher weight. Methods: This secondary analysis leveraged baseline data from caregiver-child dyads (n = 115) enrolled in an obesity intervention trial (HABITS). The Mo

Impact of participant attrition on child injury outcome estimates: a longitudinal birth cohort study in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal research is subject to participant attrition. Systemic differences between retained participants and those lost to attrition potentially bias prevalence of outcomes, as well as exposure-outcome associations. This study examines the impact of attrition on the prevalence of child injury outcomes and the association between sociodemographic factors and child injury. METHODS: Participants were recruited as part of the Environments for Healthy Living (EFHL) birth cohort study. Baseline data were drawn from maternal surveys. Child injury outcome data were extracted from hos

Laryngeal leiomyoma.

A case of leiomyoma arising from the subglottic area of a child is reported. This neoplasm is extremely rare in the larynx as only 14 cases have been described in the literature so far. Only 4 of these could be defined as subglottic. The clinical and histopathological features of laryngeal leiomyomas are briefly discussed.

Childhood physical abuse, perceived social support, and socioemotional status in adult women.

This study investigated the extent to which an interactional model, relative to a main effect model, predicts the relationship between childhood physical abuse, perceived social support, and various aspects of socioemotional functioning in adult women. The results indicated that perceived social support during childhood was significantly related to subsequent levels of adult depression, trait anxiety, and child abuse potential in a manner consistent with a main effect model. Childhood history of physical abuse was related only to adult child abuse potential. Implications and study limitations

[Ocular findings in Aicardi syndrome].

During the last six years the author has seen three new cases of Aicardi's syndrome, which hitherto had only been diagnosed in a total of 15 to 20 cases. One child also had Handmann's anomaly (morning glory syndrome), another a disturbance of leucine metabolism. The ophthalmoscopic findings in the third child were pathogmonomic, so that it was possible to establish the diagnosis before the EEG showed the typical curves, and even before callosal agenesis was shown by CT or vertebral anomalies by X-ray examination.

Clinical presentation and treatment outcome for children with comorbid externalizing and internalizing symptoms.

This study examined the effects of comorbid separation anxiety disorder (SAD) on the expression of externalizing symptoms in children presenting with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) as well as the treatment effects on anxiety and internalizing symptoms. Participants were 64 children with ODD seen in parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), including 15 children with comorbid SAD. Children with ODD+SAD did not differ from children with ODD only in disruptive behavior severity at pre-treatment assessment, and children with ODD+SAD showed significant decreases in SAD symptoms at post-treatmen

Mothers' estimates of their children with disorders of language development.

The authors' objective in this article was to explore the accuracy of mothers' estimates concerning their children's developmental functioning, especially with respect to vocabulary and gross motor development, by comparing the results of diagnostic tests administered to both the children and their mothers. The authors studied 55 children with disorders of language development (LD) between the ages of 3 and 6 years using several diagnostic scales concerning child development. The authors assessed the mothers' estimates regarding vocabulary and gross motor development by the same scales as thos

Adult-to-child transmission of tuberculosis: household or community contact?

SETTING: If a child develops tuberculosis, it is assumed that the source was an adult infectious case, usually living in the same house. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used in this study to establish transmission from source cases to children. DESIGN: Adult and child tuberculosis cases were prospectively identified from 1993 to 1998 and cultures of Mycobacterium tuberculosis collected. Interviews and RFLP analysis of M. tuberculosis strains were performed to establish epidemiological links and to confirm household transmission. RESULTS: Tuberculosis was confirmed by cult

Educational evaluation. The first step toward understanding and remediation of central auditory disorders.

Of all the problems experienced by children with learning disabilities, a language disorder may be the most detrimental to school performance. Because the problems of a child with a language disorder are frequently not recognized until he begins school, it is important that the educational clinician, teacher, related professional, and parents understand what a central auditory disorder is, that it may manifest itself as language disorder, and the way it can academically and emotionally affect a child. Evaluation and identification of a child with a central auditory disorder is vital at an earl
