The objective of this case was to report unilateral tilted disc in a boy with ipsilateral keratoconus. The tilted disc syndrome is a non-hereditary bilateral condition. This configuration is accompanied by situs inversus of the retinal vessels, congenital inferonasal conus, thinning of the inferonasal retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, and myopic astigmatism. Unilateral tilted disc syndrome is a rare condition. Keratoconus is a disorder characterised by progressive corneal steepening. The author present a case of unilateral tilted disc in a boy with ipsilateral keratoconus. Pterygium is a

Sixteen preglaucomatous eyes in which glaucomatous field defects developed were compared with 38 preglaucomatous eyes matched for age and sex whose fields remained normal. A noticeable enlargement of the cup occurred in 31% of those in which field loss developed. The cups of those in whom visual field defects developed were larger than in the controls, thus suggesting early acquired tissue damage preceding field loss. Field defects developed without noticeable enlargement and with a small initial cup in 12% of those observed, and these would not have been suspected from the initial disc appear

A scanning microdensitometric technique has been developed for measuring the optical density of black and white photographs of the optic disc. From the frequency distribution curve of all the densities of the whole area of the optic disc, a separate peak was identified as corresponding to the area of pallor of the optic disc. Areas of pallor were measured as percentage of areas of the total disc for normal, ocular hypertensive, open-angle glaucoma patients, and those with suspect discs. Median values of percent area of pallor showed correspondence with the clinical diagnosis, the glaucoma pati

There is described a rare case of a congenital optic disc pit of the 20-years old man that was accompanied by a cyst-like change in the macula with serous retinal detachment. Visual impairment in his right eye was treated with pars-plana-vitrectomy with surgical posterior vitreous detachment and gas tamponade. After temporary pneumatic displacement of the subretinal fluid inferiorly the corrected visual acuity improved to 6/9. Schisislike changes persisted in the macular area. Our findings could support the view on the two-layer structure of optic disk pit maculopathy and an important role of …

The responses of astrocytes in the optic nerve head (ONH) to mechanical and biochemical stimuli are important to understanding the degeneration of retinal ganglion cell axons in glaucoma. The ONH in glaucoma is vulnerable to stress produced by the intraocular pressure (IOP). Notably, after three days of elevated IOP in a mouse model, the junctions between the astrocytic processes and the peripapillary sclera were altered and the structural compliance of the ONH increased. In order to simulate this aspect of glaucomatous remodeling, explanted mouse eyes were treated with TrypLE, a recombinant t

In-vivo optic nerve head (ONH) biomechanics characterization is emerging as a promising way to study eye physiology and pathology. We propose a high-accuracy and high-efficiency digital volume correlation (DVC) method to characterize the in-vivo ONH deformation from optical coherence tomography (OCT) volumes. Using a combination of synthetic tests and analysis of OCTs from monkey ONHs subjected to acutely elevated intraocular pressure, we demonstrate that our proposed methodology overcame several challenges for conventional DVC methods: First, a pre-registration technique was used to remove la

BACKGROUND: To investigate the relationship between an oval optic disc and the occurrence of myopic foveoschisis (MF) using swept-source optic coherence tomography (SS-OCT).
METHODS: Fifty eyes of 25 patients with unilateral MF were included in this retrospective observational study. The biometric features of the optic disc and peripapillary structures were evaluated using SS-OCT.
RESULTS: The ovality index (OI) of the optic disc was significantly smaller (P = 0.003) and the optic disc tilt angle was greater (P = 0.023) in the eyes with MF than in the contralateral eyes. The optic disc tilt

The article presents five cases of various forms of hemangiomas of the optic nerve head (ONH) and juxtapapillary retina that were monitored and analyzed using ocular visualization methods. The obtained data allowed a conclusion that capillary hemangioma of the ONH features clearly-seen boundaries of the lesion both on ophthalmoscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images; on the other hand, juxtapapillary granuloma can be characterized by blurred outlines on ophthalmoscopy and a gradual transition of the altered retina on OCT images with secondary changes seen in the macular area. When

PURPOSE: With therapeutic advances, central nervous system (CNS) involvement in leukemia has become more common. Leukemic optic disc infiltration, often a clinical diagnosis, can present as an isolated finding in primary or relapsed CNS disease and therefore requires early recognition. Not previously well appreciated, we report here signs of intraocular inflammation accompanying leukemic optic disc infiltration, suggesting infectious or non-infectious uveitis as an alternative diagnosis. We describe a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) sign favoring leukemic infiltration.
METHODS: Retro

Glaucoma is a major threatening cause, in which it affects the optical nerve to lead to a permanent blindness to individuals. The major causes of Glaucoma are high pressure to eyes, family history, irregular sleeping habits, and so on. These kinds of causes lead to Glaucoma easily, and the effect of such disease leads to heavy damage to the internal optic nervous system and the affected person will get permanent blindness within few months. The major problem with this disease is that it is incurable; however, the affection stages can be reduced and the same level of effect as that for the long

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells with associated structural and functional changes of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer. However, recent studies employing advanced neuroimaging techniques confirmed that glaucomatous damage is not limited to the eye but extends to the brain, affecting it also beyond the central visual pathways and disrupting brain network organization. We therefore posit that, while visual field changes play an important role in glaucoma-induced disability, central nervous pathways and mechanisms may pl
