Infrared laser photolysis: a new tool for the study of prebiotic chemistry.

Infrared laser induced dielectric breakdown and multiphoton absorption experiments on CH4/NH3 'atmospheres' are described. It is found that HCN, a central intermediate in prebiotic chemistry, is a principle product. This, combined with the fact that dielectric breakdown appears to have much in common with ordinary electric sparks, suggests that the laser could be a useful tool in studies of prebiotic chemistry. Several possible experiments in this vein are suggested.

Evidence of amino acids in hydrolysates of compounds formed by ionizing radiations. II. Aqueous solutions of CH3CN and C2H5CN.

It has been shown that the action of ionizing radiations on dilute, oxygen-free, aqueous solutions of acetonitrile and propionitrile leads to the formation of oligomers, which upon hydrolyses release amino acids. The presence of nine amino acids, the same as those found in irradiated aqueous cyanides, has been established. those amino acids with asymmetric carbon atoms separated by GC method, appeared to consist of nearly equal amounts of D and L isomers. Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in hydrolysates of acetonitrile, while alanine appears in the samples of propionitrile. A comparison

Shock synthesis of amino acids II.

The synthesis of amino acids behind shock waves in methane, ethane, ammonia, and water vapor was further investigated. Aldehydes and HCN are formed separately in the non-homogeneous gas during the high temperature period and recombine with ammonia during the thermal quench period, to form chi-amino nitriles. The chi-amino nitriles are either hydrolyzed by excess water vapor during the quench period or emerge as such after the reaction is completed. A combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis of the reaction product showed identical amounts of D and L amino acids, thus confirming th

Quantum chemical study of the thermodynamics, kinetics of formation and bonding of H2CN: relevance to prebiotic chemistry.

Using the Iterative Extended Huckel Theory (IEHT), energy-conformation studies have been carried out for H2CN (I), trans-HCNH (IIA), and cis-HCNH (IIB), three possible isomers formed by addition of a hydrogen atom to hydrogen cyanide. Calculations show that the order of decreasing thermodynamic stability is I greater than IIA greater than IIB. Additionally, from calculated energies along simulated reaction pathways, the formation of I from HCN+H appears to be kinetically favored over IIA. Calculated properties of the minimum energy conformers of I and IIA are described and the potential role o

High frequency discharge experiment. I: Formation of organic compounds from methane and ammonia.

Investigations of the synthesis of organic compounds from methane and ammonia were carried out by using high frequency discharges. The radical of CN was observed in the early phase of the discharge. Therefore it is considered that the CN radical contributes to the successive reaction steps. An important intermediate, a tetramer of hydrogen cyanide was observed to be formed at room temperature. The amounts of this compound progressively increased with time. It was speculated that the purines which were identified in the refluxed sample were synthesized through the above tetramer. Compounds whic

Factors influencing time between onset of signs/symptoms and referral for dementia in elderly outpatients.

BACKGROUND: The few studies that have focused on Time between Onset of Signs and Symptoms and Referral (TOSR) for dementia to a memory center suggest a substantial delay of 1-3 years. This delay has a negative impact on both patients' and their caregivers' quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate this delay and the factors associated with it in a cohort of community-dwelling elderly people attending a memory clinic, as well as assess the impact of the Third French National Alzheimer Plan (2008-2012). METHODS: All patients referred to the Bretonneau Memory Clinic for the first

Carbon and energy yields in prebiotic syntheses using atmospheres containing CH4, CO and CO2.

Yields based on carbon are usually reported in prebiotic experiments, while energy yields (moles cal-1) are more useful in estimating the yields of products that would have been obtained from the primitive atmosphere of the earth. Energy yields for the synthesis of HCN and H2CO from a spark discharge were determined for various mixtures of CH4, CO, CO2, H2, H2O, N2 and NH3. The maximum yields of HCN and H2CO from CH4, CO, and CO2 as carbon sources are about 4 X 10(-8) moles cal-1.

Uracil synthesis via HCN oligomerization.

Uracil is released from HCN oligomers upon acid hydrolysis in concentrations of 0.001% for 1 M HCN solutions to 0.005% for 0.1 M solutions. This yield is comparable with earlier reported, minor or nonbiological pyrimidines such as 5-hydroxyuracil and orotic acid. This is the first report of uracil itself via HCN oligomerization. Data are presented which establish that the observed uracil is not formed by decarboxylation of previously formed orotic acid, but via acid hydrolysis of at least two other precursors.

Photochemistry of NH3, CH4 and PH3. Possible applications to the Jovian planets.

Photolysis of NH3 at 185 nm in the presence of a two-fold excess of CH4 results in the loss of about 0.25 mole of CH4 per mole of NH3 decomposed (delta CH4/delta NH3). The loss arises from the abstraction of hydrogen atoms from CH4 by photolytically generated hot hydrogen atoms, the presence of which is established by the constancy of delta CH4/delta NH3 between 298 and 156 K and by the quenching of the abstraction reaction when either H2 or SF6 is added. From the latter result, it can be concluded that NH3 photolysis in the H2-abundant atmosphere of Jupiter is not responsible for the presence

Rates of fixation by lightning of carbon and nitrogen in possible primitive atmospheres.

A thermochemical-hydrodynamic model of the production of trace species by electrical discharges has been used to estimate the rates of fixation of C and N by lightning in the primitive atmosphere. Calculations for various possible mixtures of CH4, CO2, CO, N2, H2, and H2O reveal that the prime species produced were probably HCN and NO and that the key parameter determining the rates of fixation was the ratio of C atoms to O atoms in the atmosphere. Atmospheres with C more abundant than O have large HCN fixation rates, in excess of 10(17) molecules J-1, but small NO yields. However, when O is m

Evidence for amino acids in hydrolysates of compounds formed by ionizing radiations. I. Aqueous solutions of HCN, NH4CN, and NaCN.

Dilute, 02-free aqueous cyanides were exposed to multikilorad doses of a radioactive cobalt source. After the removal of unreacted cyanides and of volatile radiolytic products, the residue was hydrolyzed and the resulting material analyzed for amino acids. The results show the presence of five protein amino acids and five amino acids which do not occur in natural proteins. The amino acids of enantiomeric derivatives separated on an optically active column, appeared to consist of approximately equal amounts of D and L isomers. Radiation-chemical yields of amino acids were determined at various

Prebiotic condensation reactions in an aqueous medium: a review of condensing agents.

Biopolymers are formed by dehydration-type condensation reactions. In aqueous solutions dehydration reactions are very unlikely to happen spontaneously. However, coupling of dehydration-condensation to the hydrolysis of condensing agents could facilitate the synthesis of biopolymers in an aqueous solution. The literature shows that the peptides, nucleosides, nucleotides and oligonucleotides can be formed in this way. A careful study of the literature pertaining to prebiotic condensing agents was conducted in order to determine the most plausible prebiotic synthesis of biopolymers. The condensi

The origin of proteins: Heteropolypeptides from hydrogen cyanide and water.

Evidence from laboratory and extraterrestrial chemistry is presented consistent with the hypothesis that the original heteropolypeptides on Earth were synthesized spontaneously from hydrogen cyanide and water without the intervening formation of chi-amino acids, a key step being the direct polymerization of atmospheric hydrogen cyanide to polyaminomalononitrile (IV) via dimeric HCN. Molecular orbital calculations (INDO) show that the most probable structure for (HCN)2 is azacyclopropenylidenimine. Successive reactions of hydrogen cyanide with the reactive nitrile side chains of IV then yield h

Prebiotic nucleotide synthesis-demonstration of a geologically plausible pathway.

Mineral phosphate (apatite) is activated for the synthesis of nucleotides when dilute solutions containing nucleoside and ammonium oxalate are evaporated in its presence. A natural, igneous fluorapatite was found to be even more effective in nucleotide synthesis than the more soluble hydroxylapatite. The phosphorylation is considerably more efficient if urea of cyanamide is also present. Hydrolysis of solutions of cyanogen to form oxalate and urea among other products is a spontaneous process that provides a geologically plausible model for necleotide synthesis on the primitive earth.

Models of prebiological phosphorylation.

The hypothesis that contemporary metabolic pathways envolved from analogous chemical reaction sequences on the primitive Earth leads to a reexamination of models of prebiological phosphorylation. Present-day phosphate uptake by algae and bacteria seems to involve two transport systems: (a) A n active transport process occurring at low external phosphate concentrations (as in umpolluted natural waters), with a transport constant Ks of 10(-7) to 10(-6) M Pi. (b) Another (probably diffusive) process at higher phosphate concentrations (greater than 10-6 M)(as in the interstitial water of reducing

Study on the photochemical reaction of HCN and its polymer products relating to primary chemical evolution.

The photochemical reaction of HCN at 184.9 nm is studied in the gas phase. (CN)2, H2, CH4, NH3, N2H4, C2H6, and CH3NH2 are identified as gas phase products, and a reaction mechanism is proposed. HCN polymers are also obtained as solid reaction products, and their structure is investigated by Infrared Spectorscopy, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, and Amino Acid Analysis. The process and nature of the formation of the polymers are discussed.

Methyleneaminoacetonitrile: possible role in chemical evolution-II.

Methyleneaminoacetonitrile (MAAN) when reacted with other amino acids, gives rise to the formation of peptides in addition to the usual hydrolytic products. It acts as a precursor of glycine and also as a dehydration condensing agent. It has been shown that MAAN is easily formed by the reaction of hydrogen cyanide, ammonia and formaldehyde as well as by the reaction of formaldehyde with aminoacetonitrile, in dilute ammoniacal solution.
