A mechanical model based on watermelons for the study of dynamic cranial remolding orthoses.

Deformational plagiocephaly is a head deformity in newborns that can be treated in some cases with cranial remodeling orthoses that constrain head growth to reshape it. To mitigate complications arising from the treatment with these orthoses, and for the exploration of novel functionally graded lattice structures, a biological model that mimics some aspects of human head growth could provide a development and testing platform for these lattices. In this work, we propose a novel biological model of infant heads in which watermelons are used for the study of cranial remodeling orthoses during he

Algorithms to support the choice of a wrist-hand orthosis for motor function recovery in post-stroke patients: a narrative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb paresis and spasticity are predictors of limitations on activities of daily living and decrease in quality of life in post-stroke patients. The French National Authority for Health doesn't recommend the orthosis use; nevertheless, they are commonly used in clinical practice despite the lack of consensus. OBJECTIVES: To develop algorithms guiding specialists in choosing an orthosis as an adjunct therapy for motor function recovery in post-stroke patients, depending on their recovery stage, paresis impairment and level of spasticity. METHODS: This is a scoping review, by

Breaking stiffness: A non-invasive solution for proximal interphalangeal joint rigidity.

A non-invasive thermoplastic orthosis combined with targeted exercise effectively addresses proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPj) stiffness. Stabilizing the metacarpophalangeal joint at 60 ° enables optimal torque transfer, improving flexion and correcting compensatory patterns. Posture maintenance prevents elastic recoil, enhancing tissue elongation. Preliminary results show improved kinematic control and functional recovery.

Advanced Orthosis for Radial Nerve Palsy: Improving Daily Function and Patient Comfort.

This article presents an innovative orthosis designed to improve function and patient comfort in individuals with radial nerve palsy. Current orthotic designs often fail to balance wrist stabilization with flexibility, leading to suboptimal functional recovery. Our proposed orthosis incorporates a dorsal plastic base and a volar traction system to enable wrist and finger extension while maintaining a low-profile design. Compared with existing designs, this orthosis enhances grip strength, minimizes bulkiness, and optimizes patient compliance. Clinical observations suggest that the proposed ort

Effect of different corrective force directions applied by spinal orthoses on the patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Spinal orthoses are commonly prescribed for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), yet their three-dimensional correction was not fully understood. The amount of deformity control largely depends on the corrective forces applied, which remain empirically based due to a lack of consensus on optimal force application. This study investigated the effects of different corrective force directions exerted by spinal orthoses on patients with AIS. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 78 subjects. The trunk was segmented into four quadrants using coronal and sagittal planes f

Prosthetics and orthotics for persons with movement disabilities in India in the postpandemic milieu.

The SARS-CoV-2 disease had a severe impact on global socioeconomic growth, and its harmful effects continue with virus mutation. Over the past 3 years, the pandemic has caused isolation, mental trauma, stress, financial losses, and various health complications in individuals. Recent reports have stressed the sufferings of the physically abled population. However, we should not neglect the challenges faced by the disabled population, which were more severe in many ways due to their dependency on others at various levels. The strategies implemented to contain the virus have further aggravated th

Treatment of infantile idiopathic scoliosis using a novel thoracolumbosacral orthosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The recommended treatment for mild to moderate infantile idiopathic scoliosis curves involves serial casting. There are concerns, however, regarding the safety of repeated casting in very young children owing to the requirement for anesthetization during the casting process. Very little research has been conducted on the influence of bracing as an initial treatment for scoliosis in this age group. This report details the successful treatment of a large thoracic curve using a thoracolumbosacral orthosis in an infant diagnosed with infantile idiopathic scoliosis. CASE PRESENTATION:

Robot-mediated overground gait training for transfemoral amputees with a powered bilateral hip orthosis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral amputation is a serious intervention that alters the locomotion pattern, leading to secondary disorders and reduced quality of life. The outcomes of current gait rehabilitation for TFAs seem to be highly dependent on factors such as the duration and intensity of the treatment and the age or etiology of the patient. Although the use of robotic assistance for prosthetic gait rehabilitation has been limited, robotic technologies have demonstrated positive rehabilitative effects for other mobility disorders and may thus offer a promising solution for the restoration of hea

A New Shoulder Orthosis to Dynamically Support Glenohumeral Subluxation.

OBJECTIVE: In this paper we presented a novel shoulder subluxation support that aims to reduce the stress on the passive structures around the shoulder of patients with glenohumeral subluxation and glenohumeral-related shoulder pain. The device applies a force to the upper arm without impeding the functional range of motion of the arm. Our design contains a mechanism that statically balances the arm with two elastic bands. METHODS: A technical evaluation study was conducted to assess the performance of the orthosis. Additionally, two patients evaluated the orthosis. RESULTS: The results of t

Dart thrower's motion and the injured scapholunate interosseous ligament: A scoping review of studies examining motion, orthoses, and rehabilitation.

STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review. INTRODUCTION: Dart thrower's motion (DTM) of the wrist primarily arises from the midcarpal joint, and minimizes stress to the scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL). After SLIL injury or surgery, early controlled DTM may reduce the effects of prolonged immobilization, while protecting SLIL integrity. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To summarize the literature on the effects of DTM on the injured and surgically repaired SLIL and the extent to which various DTM orthotic designs promote SLIL recovery. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted within 6 databas
