BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic elbow stiffness and heterotopic ossification (HO) affects long-term life quality, as commonly in children and teenagers as in grownups. Childhood obesity considerably influences public health because it causes stroke, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Previous research discussed its clinical complications in orthopedic diseases. However, no clinical research reveals the interaction between childhood obesity and HO after elbow injuries.
HYPOTHESIS: Obesity might be a risk factor of recurrent HO after elbow arthrolysis in children and teenagers, correlated with the

BACKGROUND: The development of heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common yet debilitating complication after elbow injuries and related surgical procedures. We intend to evaluate the regional distribution features of HO around the elbow joint in patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness (PTES), and explore the independent risk factors for HO development in different regions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who presented with PTES attributed to HO from January 2018 to December 2019 were consecutively enrolled. The pattern of HO distribution was analyzed using Mimics software (Mimics 21.0, M

Heterotopic ossification refers to the pathological formation of extra-skeletal bone. It is a common complication of trauma or surgery that can cause disability and has no definitive cure. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation during ossification remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the systemic immune microenvironment status of heterotopic ossification and identify biomarkers of therapeutic efficacy and recurrence. A combination of stereoarthrolysis with prophylactic radiotherapy and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was used to treat patients wit

BACKGROUND: Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease caused by a gain-of-function mutation in ACVR1, which is a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) type I receptor. Moreover, it causes progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) in connective tissues. Using FOP patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (FOP-iPSCs) and mouse models, we elucidated the underlying mechanisms of FOP pathogenesis and identified a candidate drug for FOP.
METHODS: In the current study, healthy mesenchymal stem/stromal cells derived from iPSCs (iMSCs) expressing ACVR2B-Fc (iMSCACVR2B-Fc),

We investigated the risk of heterotopic ossification (HO) after total hip arthroplasty in 67 patients, 16 of whom had diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). DISH was diagnosed on chest, dorsolumbar and pelvic radiographs. HO was graded according to DeLee et al. (1976). After a 1.4 year follow-up, 21 patients had HO. The risk of HO was 5 times higher in DISH than in non-DISH patients, but lower in patients receiving antivitamin K than in those receiving other anticoagulant therapy (relative risk 0.2). Our findings lead us to recommend that DISH should be diagnosed preoperatively for p

In patients who have fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, routine childhood diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis immunizations administered by intramuscular injection caused a significant risk of permanent heterotopic ossification at the site of injection (p < 10(-8)), whereas measles-mumps-rubella immunizations administered by subcutaneous injection posed no significant risk. Intramuscular injections should be avoided, if possible, once a diagnosis of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva has been established.

Tendon injuries in the aging population are often complicated by heterotopic ossification (HO), hindering functional recovery. Exosomes from tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) promote regeneration but may also induce osteogenesis, contributing to HO. Preconditioning with the BMP inhibitor LDN193189 and modification with collagen-binding peptides (CBD) can enhance the tenogenic potential of exosomes while mitigating osteogenic effects. We evaluated the efficacy of a 3D-printed scaffold loaded with LDN-preconditioned, CBD-modified exosomes (3D-CBD@LDN/Exos) derived from CD26+ TSPCs in promotin

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is an unclear etiological trigger that results in diverse extra-skeletal bone formation in muscles and soft tissues. This often results in morbidity and reduced quality of life with pain, contractures, and mobility impairment. We present two patients with HO with a history of severe COVID-19 infection requiring 1-month-long mechanical ventilation. The first patient was found to have progressive stiffening of the right knee and left elbow, with clear demonstration of radiographic findings and active dystrophic calcification by nuclear medicine three-phase bone scan

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature bone in soft tissue, often occurring after fractures and trauma. Patients with HO experience pain, joint stiffness, and other complications. Treatment aims to improve function; surgical procedures have succeeded in 83.3 % of cases. Existing literature has extensively documented instances of HO occurring in the acetabulum, elbow, and during total hip arthroplasty (THA). HO formation is rare around the knee and intraarticularly after tibia nailing. A unique aspect of our case is the period of restricted ROM in the knee follow

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication of elbow trauma that can affect limb mobility. Inflammation is an initiating factor for HO formation. Tranexamic acid (TXA) can reduce the inflammatory response after orthopaedic surgery. However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of TXA use for HO prevention after elbow trauma surgery is lacking.
METHODS: This retrospective observational propensity-score-matched (PSM) cohort study was conducted from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2021, at the National Orthopedics Clinical Medical Center, Shanghai, People's Republic of China. A

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that leads to serious spinal deformity and ankylosis. Persistent inflammation and progressive ankylosis lead to loss of spinal flexibility in patients with AS. Tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs) have emerged as a one kind of nanomaterial composed of four specially designed complementary DNA single strands with outstanding biological properties. Results from in vivo experiments demonstrated that tFNAs treatment could inhibit inflammatory responses and heterotopic ossification to halt disease progression. In vitro, t

PURPOSE: Heterotopic ossification is a phenomenon in cervical arthroplasty. Previous reports have mainly focused on various semiconstrained devices and only a few publications have focused on ossification around devices that are nonconstrained. The purpose of this study was to assess the occurrence of heterotopic ossification around a nonconstrained cervical device and how it affects clinical outcome 2 years after surgery.
METHODS: Thirty-seven patients were included from a larger cohort of a randomized controlled trial (NORCAT) which compared single-level cervical arthroplasty with fusion. T
