COVID-19 Pandemic and Children: A Review.

The severe respiratory disease COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) was first reported in late December 2019 in Wuhan City, China. Soon thereafter, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared it a pandemic. The adult population is highly affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2); however, infants and children are also not spared. Transmission in the pediatric population appears to be primarily from COVID-19-positive adults, largely from family contacts through droplets, direct contacts, and aerosols. There is also evidence of fecal-oral route of transm

Avoiding Anchoring Bias in the Times of the Pandemic!

COVID-19 has a broad spectrum of clinical presentations, including central nervous system manifestations that are not uncommon. The high pretest probability of COVID-19 in pandemic can lead to anchoring. We present a patient of COVID-19 pneumonia who presented with dyspnea and acute confusional state. His initial workup was suggestive of tuberculous meningoencephalitis with lymphocytic pleocytosis, high protein in CSF analysis, and suspicious MRI findings, which was later confirmed with a positive CSF culture. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first such case. Anchoring to the diagnosis

Importance of diagnostics in epidemic and pandemic preparedness.

Diagnostics are fundamental for successful outbreak containment. In this supplement, 'Diagnostic preparedness for WHO Blueprint pathogens', we describe specific diagnostic challenges presented by selected priority pathogens most likely to cause future epidemics. Some challenges to diagnostic preparedness are common to all outbreak situations, as highlighted by recent outbreaks of Ebola, Zika and yellow fever. In this article, we review these overarching challenges and explore potential solutions. Challenges include fragmented and unreliable funding pathways, limited access to specimens and rea

Antiviral Medications in Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza.

BACKGROUND: Amantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir are currently available in Germany for the prevention and treatment of influenza. We review their efficacy and side-effect profiles. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent randomized and controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews retrieved by a systematic literature search, and on other relevant literature. RESULTS: The efficacy of antiviral drugs for the prevention of symptomatic influenza ranges from 60% to 90% (number needed to treat [NNT], 8-89) depending on the population and type of drug in question. Antiviral drugs shorten th

Origins of the current seventh cholera pandemic.

Vibrio cholerae has caused seven cholera pandemics since 1817, imposing terror on much of the world, but bacterial strains are currently only available for the sixth and seventh pandemics. The El Tor biotype seventh pandemic began in 1961 in Indonesia, but did not originate directly from the classical biotype sixth-pandemic strain. Previous studies focused mainly on the spread of the seventh pandemic after 1970. Here, we analyze in unprecedented detail the origin, evolution, and transition to pandemicity of the seventh-pandemic strain. We used high-resolution comparative genomic analysis of st…

Pandemic influenza: an evolutionary concept analysis.

AIM: The aim of this paper was to provide a concept analysis of 'pandemic influenza'. BACKGROUND: Pandemic influenza can have a devastating impact as individuals have little to no immunity towards the newly encountered virus. It is a persistent societal threat due to the advancement of multiple technological processes. Nurses work in multiple roles in pandemics. As such, a thorough understanding of the concept and its implications from a nursing perspective is required. DESIGN: Rodgers' Evolutionary Method was used to conduct the concept analysis of the term 'pandemic influenza'. DATA SOURC…

A Perspective on the Global Pandemic of Waterborne Disease.

Waterborne diseases continue to take a heavy toll on the global community, with developing nations, and particularly young children carrying most of the burden of morbidity and mortality. Starting with the historical context, this article explores some of the reasons why this burden continues today, despite our advances in public health over the past century or so. While molecular biology has revolutionized our abilities to define the ecosystems and etiologies of waterborne pathogens, control remains elusive. Lack of basic hygiene and sanitation, and failing infrastructure, remain two of the g

Disease mongering and the fear of pandemic influenza.

The catastrophic H1N1 pandemic of 1918, which killed tens of millions, is now legendary, and influenza policy has centered on preventing another such disaster. There is reason for concern about influenza A. It can rapidly alter its genetic makeup to increase virulence and can jump from other species to humans. Nonetheless, ignorance about influenza in 1918, the lack of effective vaccines or antibacterial and antiviral drugs, and the social disruption caused by World War I also contributed heavily to the lethality, and it is unlikely that influenza of similar destructiveness will recur. The stu

Antiviral strategies for pandemic and seasonal influenza.

While vaccines are the primary public health response to seasonal and pandemic flu, short of a universal vaccine there are inherent limitations to this approach. Antiviral drugs provide valuable alternative options for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza. Here, we will review drugs and drug candidates against influenza with an emphasis on the recent progress of a host-targeting entry-blocker drug candidate, DAS181, a sialidase fusion protein.

Vaccines against influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported, as of September 2009, that the influenza A (H1N1) influenza pandemic has originated >300,000 laboratory-confirmed cases and 3917 deaths in 191 countries. It is recognized that pandemic vaccines have their greatest impact as a preventive strategy when administered before or near the peak incidence of cases in an outbreak. Therefore, vaccination campaigns should be in place when influenza A (H1N1) 2009 vaccines are available. We undertook this study to provide updated information on clinical evaluation of influenza A (H1N1) v

[Encephalitis and encephalopathy associated with pandemic flu].

Avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses in birds in parts of Asia, Africa, and Middle East continue to cause human diseases and to pose the threat … ications associated with influenza have been reviewed by taking a closer look at previous influenza pandemics in the 20th century and seasonal influenza epidemics in Japan; this will enhance preparations against human pandemics. In addition, we have also reviewed a few human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) infection where the central nervous system (CNS) …

Pandemic flu: are we properly prepared?

This paper presents the proceedings of the 2006 conference 'Pandemic flu: Are we properly prepared?', held in London. This conference sought to provide an overview of the preparatory steps necessary if a potential UK pandemic influenza (flu) outbreak is to be mitigated. Topics included the history of pandemic flu, research and development, antiviral drugs, clinical assessment of flu, and critical care contingency planning. The ethical dilemmas relating to a flu pandemic were also discussed.

Systemic hypertension: an endemic, epidemic, and a pandemic.

Disease epidemics have influenced world history throughout time. Although disease patterns such as the plague and smallpox historically have been infectious in nature, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal disease have become the new global epidemics. The effects of these conditions affect nearly all populations of the world. Although high blood pressure has been implicated as the common link of these pandemic patterns only for less than half a century, the impact of hypertension treatment and control has become a documented popu
