Pancreatitis, panniculitis and polyarthritis syndrome: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatitis, panniculitis, and polyarthritis (PPP) syndrome is a rare form of pancreatic disease. It is characterized by bullous erythematous skin lesions and arthritis, and both are triggered by pancreatic malfunction. Few cases have been described in the literature thus far. Due to the inconsistency in its clinical presentation, its diagnosis can be a challenge. Early therapy initiation is essential to reduce mortality; however, there is currently no gold standard for treatment. CASE SUMMARY: A 66-year-old polymorbid male patient presented with several superficial abscesses on …

Such radiological features suggested the diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis. Subsequently, intravenous corticosteroid therapy was initiated and the patient exhibited significant improvement after 24 hours. The patient was discharged after nine days of hospitalization. Pseudomonas aeruginosa as an uncommon agent of infectious panniculitis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus that frequently causes septicemia, abscesses and infections in skin wounds. Panniculitis caused by this microorganism is unusual and there are few well-documented cases, none of them in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. The present report describes an immunosuppressed patient with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed panniculitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with a review of the literature on this rare presentation.

Ultrasound analysis for pancreatic panniculitis: A case report.

Pancreatic panniculitis (PP) is a necrotizing inflammation of subcutaneous fat that is a rare complication of pancreatic disease appearing in 2% to 3% of all patients. It is more common in the elderly and often affects the extremities. It presents as skin inflammation with pain and erythema nodules. We report a case of acute pancreatitis associated with PP in an old female. She was admitted for vomiting and abdominal pain for 3 days and presented with a 2-week history of erythematous subcutaneous nodules on her legs. Laboratory and ultrasonic findings revealed acute pancreatitis. High frequenc…

Panniculitis Ossificans in Posterior Knee: An Unusual Presentation.

Panniculitis ossificans (PO) is a heterotopic ossification, benign recurring lesion, presenting in a variety of presentations anywhere in the body. The condition can sometimes be mistaken for a malignant bone tumor or long list of other differential diagnoses which have been mentioned in our report and that may lead to unnecessary wrong management. We report a case of a patient with subcutaneous ossification in the posterior aspect of the left knee. PO was confirmed histologically showing subcutaneous fat necrosis associated with osteoid material.

A case of mesenteric panniculitis in a patient with Tangier disease.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease caused by idiopathic inflammation of adipose tissue, most commonly affecting the mesentery of the small bowel. We present a unique case of mesenteric panniculitis in a patient with Tangier disease; a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the ABCA1 gene, leading to deficiency of high-density lipoprotein in the blood and accumulation of cholesterol esters within various tissues. The accumulation of cholesterol esters in body tissues in patients with Tangier disease may contribute to the pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis; although there is li…

Mesenteric panniculitis in a patient with new onset dermatomyositis.

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP), part of the spectrum of sclerosing mesenteritis, is an often asymptomatic disorder that is characterised by chronic inflammation of abdominal mesentery. We present a case of an 83-year-old woman who presented with proximal muscle weakness and erythematous, photosensitive rash of the face and upper torso and was subsequently diagnosed with dermatomyositis based on skin biopsy, electromyography and muscle biopsy. She had radiographic evidence of panniculitis on CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis for malignancy surveillance, which improved on serial CT scan 3 months a…

Sterile traumatic panniculitis in a captive Brent goose.

A captive, adult female Brent goose (Branta bernicla) with a history of severe feather picking by its mate, was presented with 0.5-2.5 cm skin nodules on the head and neck. Histologic examination revealed a well-delineated dermal mass that surrounded an intact feather follicle and was composed of lakes of proteinaceous fluid and fibrin with scattered foamy macrophages and multinucleate giant cells. No bacteria or fungi were identified with histology, microbial culture, or PCR. Sterile panniculitis is an infrequent finding in animals and traumatic panniculitis is rarely sterile.

Panniculitis as an Initial Presentation of Dermatomyositis: A Case Report.

Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic muscle disease characterized by proximal muscle weakness, raised muscle enzymes, characteristic changes in electromyography and typical skin rash and biopsy findings. Dermatological features like Gottron's sign and papules are considered as pathognomonic for dermatomyositis. Panniculitis is one of the rare findings in dermatomyositis. Here, we report a case of dermatomyositis in 37 years old female who presented with only panniculitis and the diagnosis was delayed by more than a year.

A Longstanding, Persistent and Recurrent Case of Cryptogenic Panniculitis.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a rare subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. There may be a significant histologic overlap with traumatic panniculitis and lupus profundus. We describe a 54-year-old woman who had received a diagnosis of SPTCL based upon a left parietal scalp biopsy 5 years earlier. This diagnosis was supported by immunohistochemistry (IHC) demonstrating a CD8+ predominant lymphocyte population in the subcutis. T-cell gene rearrangement studies were not performed at that time. The patient was treated and showed significant clinical improvement. When sev…

Mesenteric Panniculitis: An Unusual Presentation of Abdominal Pain.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare autoimmune disease that eventually evolves into fibrotic changes that usually affect the adipose tissue around the mesenteric vessels. It can present through a myriad of gastroenterological as well as constitutional symptoms, including but not limited to abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, nausea, or vomiting. Although the exact etiology of the disease is yet to be determined, there are several predisposing factors, the most common of which is a previous history of abdominal trauma and/or surgery. Several case series have reported the association of sclerosing me

Panniculitis, pancreatitis, and polyarthritis: a rare clinical syndrome.

A rare triad composed of lobular panniculitis in the setting of pancreatitis and polyarthritis is termed panniculitis, pancreatitis, and polyarthritis (PPP) syndrome. Pancreatic panniculitis is a rare form of subcutaneous fat necrosis associated with underlying pancreatic disease. We describe a case of PPP syndrome and review the relevant literature associated with this rare clinical syndrome. Despite numerous adjuvant therapies, definitive treatment of PPP syndrome requires correction of the underlying pancreatic disease.

Necrotizing Panniculitis as an Uncommon Manifestation of Acute Pancreatitis.

UNLABELLED: Pancreatic panniculitis is a rare disorder affecting 2-3% of patients with pancreatic disease. The findings are characterized by tender, erythematous, subcutaneous nodules which may undergo spontaneous ulceration with discharge of brownish and viscous material derived from colliquative necrosis of adipocytes. The lesions are usually localized in the lower limbs, although they may also extend to the buttocks and also involve the trunk, upper limbs and scalp. They can precede overt pancreatic disease in 40% of cases. The typical histological features observed in these lesions are cha…
