Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Evaluation of Sinonasal Masses with Histopathological Correlation.

Sinonasal mass is the abnormal growth of tissue from nasal cavity and mucosa of the paranasal sinuses. The growth may be benign or malignant. The benign lesion grows slowly and does not metastasize. The malignant lesion grows rapidly and metastasizes early. The aim of this study is to evaluate and diagnose the various types of sinonasal masses with MRI and its correlation with histopathological findings. This cross sectional descriptive study was carried out for a period of 02 years, from July 2015 to June 2017. The patients were selected from the ENT outpatient department and from the departm

Clinical management of emerging sinonasal malignancies.

Several emerging sinonasal malignancies have recently been described in the pathology literature. Although not all distinctly classified by the World Health Organization, these rare tumors present a management challenge to surgeons and oncologists. While prior studies have summarized histologic details, a clinically focused review is currently lacking in the literature. This review describes the presentation, histopathology, imaging, treatment, and prognosis of newly described or recently evolving sinonasal malignancies while highlighting the distinguishing features of these entities. It inclu

Synchronous sinonasal and respiratory papilloma: could long-term positive pressure ventilation be the cause? A rare case report.

This case report describes a rare presentation of synchronous pathologies-sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP)-in a 47-year-old man using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation for progressive obstructive sleep apnoea. As far as we know, this is the first case of concurrent SIP and RRP disease described in the literature. The patient initially presented for management of chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms. He was found to have an extensive nasal lesion on flexible nasendoscopy, for which surgical management was recommended. However, dur

A study of functional endoscopic sinus surgery technique.

Endoscopic sinus surgery has become a widely accepted surgical procedure for the treatment of chronic inflammatory sinus diseases. In our study 100 patients were suffering from polyposis treated by functional endoscopic sinus surgery in MMCH. Out of 100 patients 53 patients were suffering from ethmoidal polyp and 47 patients were suffering from antrochoanal polyp between the ages 7 to 45 years. Among antrochoanal polyp 2 patients were found with inverted papilloma and came with recurrence. 40% of the patients came with a follow up visit up to 1 year. 7 out of 53 cases of ethmoidal patient came

Contact endoscopy of the nasal mucosa.

The possibility of contact endoscopy in the nasal mucosa, using a contact microlaryngoscope is examined. With contact endoscopy it has been possible to visualize in vivo and in situ (60x, 150x) the superficial cell layers of the nasal epithelium, previously stained with methylene blue. Normal mucosa and cases with pathology (chronic rhinitis, nasal polyposis, inverted papilloma, mucormicosis and carcinoma) were assessed with contact endoscopy (50 patients). Squamous epithelium, ciliated epithelium, glandular ostia, mucus secretions, microvascular networks, inflammatory cell infiltrates, tissue

Naso-conjunctival fistula: a rare variant managed with vascularised galea-pericranium flap.

Naso-conjunctival fistula is a rare complication of endoscopic tumour resection. There is a composite deficiency of supporting medial orbital wall and the mucosal linings. A resilient but pliable flap is needed to form the partition, anchor the medial canthus and fill up the orbital volume defect. We present a case of a man in his late 70s having a fistula in the left eye with complaints of air blows during breathing and frequent epiphora for 6 months. He had a lax lower eyelid with clinically evident enophthalmos. The patient was previously operated for locally invasive inverted papilloma. Th

A Case of Sinochoanal Polyp Originating From the Ethmoid Sinus.

A nasal polyp is a distinct mucosal pathology that obstructs the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, with various phenotypes and endotypes. Nasal polyps should be distinguished from inverted papillomas, squamous cell carcinomas, juvenile angiofibromas, lymphomas, and olfactory neuroblastomas. A choanal polyp is a solitary benign lesion that originates in the paranasal sinus and extends to the choana through the natural ostium of the sinus. Choanal polyps usually originate from the maxillary sinus; however, we recently experienced the case of 41-year old women with sinochoanal polyp originated

The first case of myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma affecting the maxillary bone.

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS) is rare and malignant soft-tissue neoplasms that typically present in the extremities. In the literature, MIFS has been reported in the groin, back, neck, nose, and temporal regions in addition to the extremities. We report a case of MIFS presenting with the complaints of nasal bleeding, purulent nasal discharge, and swelling on the right side of his face. Polypoid tissues protruded from the middle meatus were observed and initial diagnosis was inverted papilloma. The painless tumor was initially mistaken for low-grade myxofibrosarcoma in biopsy. Ma

Transitional cell neoplasm of the nasolacrimal duct associated with human papillomavirus type 11.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the lacrimal sac are rare but noteworthy because of their significant potential to become malignant or life-threatening if treatment is delayed. Dermatologists may be the first to encounter such neoplasms. OBSERVATIONS: We report a case of a 53-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with a seven-year history of an asymptomatic, subcutaneous nodule near her right medial canthus. Histology of the lesion revealed transitional epithelium in a papillary growth pattern with numerous goblet cells, scattered mitoses and focal full-thickness atypia. The patient was diagnosed with

Endoscopic surgery of the olfactory cleft.

The olfactory cleft is the specific site of development of many tumours (respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma, intestinal-type adenocarcinoma, neuroblastoma, inverted papilloma, glomangiopericytoma, etc.) and is also the site of CSF rhinorrhoea via the cribriform plate (cribri-rhinorrhoea). Olfactory cleft surgery must therefore be considered to be a specific type of surgery, complementary to ethmoidal labyrinth surgery and anterior skull base surgery. Olfactory cleft tumours can be resected according to five different surgical procedures: olfactory cleft mucosal resection, partial res

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).

Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that opens up the sinus air cells and the sinus ostia with an endoscope. The use of FESS as a sinus surgical method has now become widely accepted and the term functional is meant to distinguish this type of endoscopic surgery from the nonendoscopic more conventional sinus procedure. Functional Endoscopic sninus surgery is being done regularly at TU Teaching Hospital from 2003. Total number of cases done from March 2003 till December 2005 were 94. Maximum number of FESS was done for nasal polyps, which was ca

Chondro-osseous respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the nasal cavity.

INTRODUCTION: Chondro-osseous respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (COREAH) is a benign lesion of the nose and sinuses that is extremely rare, with only 2 cases reported in the literature to date. CASE REPORT: We present herein the third reported case of COREAH, in a 38-year-old woman who presented with left nasal obstruction and a mass in her left nasal cavity. The mass was completely resected endoscopically. Microscopic examination showed hamartomatous proliferation of respiratory-type glands with mucinous metaplasia admixed with numerous spicules of mature bone, characteristic of C

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a rare tumor, mostly affecting the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. We report a case of PLGA which occurred within the maxillary sinus in a 59-year-old woman. The tumor was resected through a transnasal endoscopic approach with wide margins. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case with primary PLGA of the maxillary sinus.

Urothelial lesions with inverted growth patterns: histogenesis, molecular genetic findings, differential diagnosis and clinical management.

A number of well-recognized urothelial lesions with inverted morphology occur in the urinary bladder. Some are so common that they are considered normal variants of urothelium, whereas others are rare. It is important for the surgical pathologist to recognize these lesions and their overlapping morphological features, because in some cases establishing an accurate diagnosis is challenging. In this article, we review the spectrum of inverted urothelial lesions of the bladder. Emphasis is placed on differential diagnosis, molecular genetic findings, morphology and histogenesis.

[Percutaneous treatment of tumors of the upper urinary tract].

In our Institution, 23 patients were selected for percutaneous resection of tumors of the upper urinary tract. Two patients underwent a second procedure: the first for ipsilateral recur and the second for an heterolateral tumor. Among these 23 patients, 11 presented a benign tumor, 9 were treated for a transitional carcinoma of whom 2 invasive state. Both underwent a nephro-ureterectomy. For the 7 superficial transitional carcinomas, the mean follow-up period is 30.4 months. The ipsilateral local recurrencee is 14.3% (1/7), and concern a poorly differentiated tumor (G III). Modified midfacial degloving. A practical approach to extensive bilateral benign tumours of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Midfacial degloving is a well-known technique for entering the nasal and paranasal cavities, the rhinopharynx and the base of the skull. We report our experience with a modification of midfacial degloving, applied to two patients with extensive bilateral benign tumours in the nasal cavities and the paranasal sinuses. No rhinoplastic procedure is necessary in this modification, and the access to the upper part of the nasal cavity is improved.

[Endoscopic surgery for selected tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses--practical sense of the four hands technique].

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a gold standard in chronic sinusitis since middle '80. More and more attention is put on endosnasal tumor removal with the endoscopic technique. Two major pathologies are present in the literature, the inverted papilloma and the angiofibroma. Other tumors are rare. In the ENT Department of Poznań Medical University, endoscopic removal of tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses is done with the four hands technique. Since November 2006 to July 2007 12 cases were operated in our institution. Fully endoscopic removal was performed in 7 cases. In 2 cases an endoscopic

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma associated with nasal polyposis.

Hamartoma is a rare, non-neoplastic tumor characterized by an abnormal mixture of tissues, which are indigenous to the region. They are rare in the nasal cavity. We report a 79-year-old woman with an adenomatoid hamartoma in the left nasal cavity associated with nasal polyposis. This association supports the hypothesis that inflammation is one of the factors that induce the development of a hamartoma. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to completely remove it, and this lesion was found to have arisen from the lateral nasal wall. It is an unusual localization because the most com
