Measurement of hookworm infection intensity and circulating levels of IgE and autoantibodies to IgE in atopics and nonatopics living in a parasitized community in Papua New Guinea.

We have compared hookworm infection intensity, as determined by fecal egg count, and circulating levels of IgE and autoantibodies to IgE in atopic and nonatopic parasitized (predominantly hookworm-infected) patients from Kebasob village on Karkar Island, Papua New Guinea. Our study has clearly established that parasitized atopic individuals have significantly higher levels of IgE and autoanti-IgE than their nonatopic counterparts, and that atopy does not appear to influence accumulated levels of hookworm infection. These data, therefore, do not support an earlier report that suggested that the

A Microfiltration Device for Urogenital Schistosomiasis Diagnostics.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease affecting over 200 million people worldwide. This study reports the design and development of a microfiltration device for isolating schistosome eggs in urine for rapid diagnostics of urogenital schistosomiasis. The design of the device comprises a linear array of microfluidic traps to immobilize and separate schistosome eggs. Sequential loading of individual eggs is achieved autonomously by flow resistance, which facilitates observation and enumeration of samples with low-abundance targets. Computational fluid dynamics modeling and experimental character

The effect on liveweight gain of using anthelmintics with incomplete efficacy against resistant Cooperia oncophora in cattle.

A replicated field trial was conducted to measure the effect on liveweight gain of failing to adequately control anthelmintic resistant populations of Cooperia oncophora and to determine whether populations, and hence production losses, increased with time. Eight mobs of 10 Friesian-Hereford calves were run on independent farmlets from January to December, over each of two years. All mobs were routinely treated with a pour-on formulation of eprinomectin every six weeks, which controlled parasites other than Cooperia. Four mobs also received six weekly treatments with an oral levamisole plus al

Differential Effect of Ivermectin on Intestinal Helminths in Multimmate Mouse (Mastomys natalensis).

Mastomys natalensis is a widespread rodent species in sub-Saharan Africa and is increasingly recognised as an important component of food systems in some communities. However, rodents may harbour gastrointestinal helminths with potential implications for animal health, food safety, and zoonotic disease transmission. Information on gastrointestinal helminth infections in M. natalensis and the response of these parasites to anthelmintic treatment is limited. This study investigated the prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal helminths in M. natalensis and evaluated changes in helminth egg b

Advancing gastrointestinal parasite diagnosis in West African long-legged lambs in Southern Benin: a comparative study of McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC methods.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites remain a significant global challenge to livestock health and farm productivity, particularly in resource-limited regions. Accurate and reliable fecal egg count (FEC) methods are essential for quantifying parasite burden and evaluating anthelmintic efficacy. This study compared the diagnostic performance of the Mini-FLOTAC and the modified McMaster techniques for detecting GI parasites in West African Long-legged (WALL) sheep under field conditions in southern Benin. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, during which 200 fresh fecal sample

Validation of targeted selective treatment (TST) methodology for gastrointestinal parasites of adult sheep in different physiological states.

We aimed to validate a targeted selective treatment (TST) methodology for treating parasitic gastrointestinal infections in ewes in different physiological states using parasitological and hematological parameters. Forty ewes were monitored from December 2021 to June 2022 and evaluated during various physiological stages in their life cycle. Before starting the experiment, a fecal egg count (FEC) reduction test was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the anthelmintic (AH) treatment. Weekly assessments were performed based on the Famacha© (F) system and body condition score (BCS), and ewes we

Occurrence of gastrointestinal nematodes in captive nonhuman primates at Matang Wildlife Centre, Sarawak.

Gastrointestinal nematodes can cause assorted health problems to human and other primates. The status of gastrointestinal nematodes in non-human primates remained less documented in Malaysia. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of gastrointestinal nematodes recovered from the fecal samples of captive non-human primates at the Matang Wildlife Centre (MWC), Sarawak. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 60 non-human primates of six species (i.e. Orangutan, Bornean gibbon, Silvered Leaf monkey, Slow loris, Pig-tailed macaque, and Long-tailed macaque) and processed using simple fecal fl

Effect of non target snails on some biological of Lymnaea natalensis snails and their infection to Fasciola gigantica.

The influence of non-target freshwater snails (Melanoides tuberculata and Planorbis planorbis) on the capacity of Fasciola egg production F. gigantica miracidia to infect Lymnaea natalensis and their effect on mortality and growth rates showed that the snails exhibited a competitive ability against L. natalensis. The mortality rate existed in mixed cultures with snails was greatly increased, and increased with increase of snails number. The egg production and growth rate were negatively affected by the presence of M. tuberculata and P. planorbis which was more pronounced when snails were at hi

Experimental control of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, by the ampullariid snail Lanistes varicus.

The biological control of the snail hosts of the trematodes that cause human schistosomiasis appears to be a promising method for achieving sustainable reductions in the transmission of the parasites. The possibility of using the Ghanaian strain of an ampullariid snail, Lanistes varicus, for the biological control of the main snail host of Schistosoma mansoni , Biomphalaria pfeifferi, has now been investigated in laboratory-based experiments. Adult and 2-week-old L. varicus were found to feed voraciously on the egg masses and juveniles of B. pfeifferi (from the Tono irrigation canals in northe

Parasitological and immunological changes in murine hepatic schistosomiasis before and after praziquantel treatment.

Hepatic fibrosis was assessed by estimating hydroxyproline content in liver tissues at the course of the disease and after PZQ treatment. Parasitological investigations included egg count in faeces and tissues (liver and intestine) and oogram pattern. The results showed that treatment of infected mice with PZQ, modulated the course of schistosomiasis as evaluated by highly significant decline in hepatic hydroxyproline content as well as egg count in stool and tissues. In addition, the oogram pattern showed that PZQ had a lethal effect on mature eggs in tissues. PZQ treatment of S. mansoni infe

A comparison of biological performances among a laboratory-isolated population and two wild populations of Moniliformis moniliformis.

Divergence of biological performance of a laboratory-reared population of Moniliformis moniliformis (Acanthocephala) was investigated after 31 yr, or approximately 60 generations, of genetic isolation. An isolate of the laboratory-reared population and isolates of 2 wild populations were used to begin 3 independent life cycles that were maintained for 1 generation for interbreeding and life history trait comparison. Both wild population isolates represented populations with open gene flow. One wild population isolate represented a present-day sample of descendants of the parent population of t

In vitro responses of praziquantel-resistant and -susceptible Schistosoma mansoni to praziquantel.

The resistance status of five praziquantel-susceptible and five praziquantel-resistant isolates was confirmed by chemotherapy in CD(1) mice with 3 x 200mg/kg micronised praziquantel. Micronised praziquantel had higher efficacy than two other praziquantel formulations (prepared without milling). The five resistant isolates were less responsive to praziquantel than the five susceptible isolates (59-74% reduction in worm burden in resistant isolates compared with 92-100% in susceptible isolates). Observations were made on the in vitro responses of different stages of 10 isolates to praziquantel.
