Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with autonomic symptoms syndrome as the initial manifestation of idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis.

This is the first report of 2 patients presenting with short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with autonomic symptoms as the initial manifestation of idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis. They both had acute retro-orbital pain ipsilateral to the dural thickening on magnetic resonance imaging of brain, and one had transient miosis as an additional parasympathetic feature. Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache with autonomic symptoms syndrome may be associated with secondary central nervous system pathology, and neuroimaging should be considered in all patients with t

Autonomic nervous system activity correlates with peak experiences induced by DMT and predicts increases in well-being.

BACKGROUND: Non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by psychedelics can be accompanied by so-called "peak experiences," characterized a … dy was to investigate to what extent changes in the relative influence of the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS) over cardiac activity may reflect the subjective experience induced by the short-acting psychedelic N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). METHODS: We derived measures of SNS and PNS activity from the electrocardiograms of 17 participants (11 males, …

Altered autonomic nervous system reactivity to pain in trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: In the past two decades, there has been increasing evidence to suggest that trigeminal neuralgia (TN) may be linked to a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim of the present study was to formally test this hypothesis by comparing the reactivity of the ANS to experimental pain in a population of TN patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Twelve patients diagnosed with classical TN and 12 healthy controls participated in the study. Cardiac activity was assessed while participants were instructed to rest and again during a cold pressor test (CPT). Heart rate vari

[The influence of respiratory insufficiency on autonomic nervous system function in infants].

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the respiratory insufficiency in infants treated conservatively or with the use of mechanical lung ventilation, on cardiovascular activity of the autonomic nervous system and interdependence of the sympathic and parasympathic system in infants. The cardiovascular autonomic nervous system functions were estimated by the power spectrum analysis of the heart rate variability (PS/HRV) using MEDEA HRV system. HRV spectrum analysis was limited to low (LF: 0.05-0.2 Hz) and high (HF: 0.2-0.6 Hz) frequency components, which were indicators of the sin

Role of prostaglandin E2 in cholinergic-mediated glycoprotein synthesis in canine antrum.

We studied the mechanism of cholinergic stimulation of mucin synthesis in canine antral explants, including the role of PGE2 as an intermediate messenger. Isolated antral mucosa was incubated with 10(-5) M carbachol (Cb), 10(-5) M indomethacin (IND), 10(-5) M pirenzepine (PZ), 10(-5) M Cb + 10(-5) M PZ, 10(-5) M Cb + 10(-5) M IND, and 10(-5) M IND + PGE2 (10(-8), 10(-7) and 10(-6) M) in the presence or absence of [3H]glucosamine. After 24 hr, total glycoprotein synthesis was quantitated by Sepharose-4B chromatography and by 10% TCA/1% PTA precipitation with lipid extraction. PGE2 released into

[The effect of multimodal pathogenetic therapy on microcirculatory function in combined craniocerebral trauma].

It is known that severe combined maxillocranial trauma causes impairment of microcirculatory vessels of bulbar conjunctiva as well as changes of local (cervical) and systemic blood flow, prevailing on the side of injury. New trigeminosympathetic regional block was used to produce chemical neurotomy of sympathetic and parasympathetic portions of autonomous nervous system in the neck. This blockade induced positive changes of minute CBF and microcirculation of CNS and facial area. Modified trigeminal sympathetic regional blockade along with intravenous infusion of dimephosphone improves both mic

Infant Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Activity during Baseline, Stress and Recovery: Interactions with Prenatal Adversity Predict Physical Aggression in Toddlerhood.

Exposure to prenatal adversity is associated with aggression later in life. Individual differences in autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning, specifically nonreciprocal activation of the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic (SNS) nervous systems, increase susceptibility to aggression, especially in the context of adversity. Previous work examining interactions between early adversity and ANS functioning in infancy is scarce and has not examined interaction between PNS and SNS. This study examined whether the PNS and SNS moderate the relation between cumulative prenatal risk and early phys

Kidney neural diversity and blood pressure regulation: resolving controversies and guiding hypertension therapy.

The kidney receives innervation from 3 distinct neural populations: tyrosine hydroxylase-positive sympathetic nerves, acetylcholine-positive parasympathetic nerves, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-positive vagal sensory nerves. Activation of kidney parasympathetic nerves triggers acetylcholine release. Optogenetic activation of kidney vagal sensory neurons decreases blood pressure and heart rate, whereas selective activation of kidney parasympathetic nerves exerts no measurable impact on blood pressure and heart rate.

Functional-Molecular Mechanisms of Sympathetic-Parasympathetic Dysfunction in PVC-Induced Cardiomyopathy Revealed by Dual Stressor PVC-Exercise Challenge.

BACKGROUND: The significance of autonomic dysfunction in premature ventricular contraction-induced cardiomyopathy (PVC-CM) remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: Utilizing a novel "dual stressor" provocative challenge combining exercise with premature ventricular contraction (PVCs), the authors characterized the functional and molecular mechanisms of cardiac autonomic (cardiac autonomic nervous system) remodeling in a PVC-CM animal model. METHODS: In 15 canines (8 experimental, 7 sham), we implanted pacemakers and neurotelemetry devices and subjected animals to 12 weeks of bigeminal PVCs to induce PVC-

Acute effects of oral delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on autonomic cardiac activity and their relation to subjective and anxiogenic effects.

Cannabis is the most commonly used psychotropic drug in the United States, after alcohol. Despite its apparent sedative and calming effects, cannabis and its main psychoactive constituent, ∆9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can produce serious adverse effects including tachycardia and anxiety. These effects can be especially pronounced in women, who remain underrepresented in clinical cannabinoid research. The present study is one of the first to characterize the effects of single doses of oral THC on autonomic nervous system function in healthy adult women. Occasional female cannabis users partic

First Bite Syndrome Following Carotid Endarterectomy.

A 67-year-old man with a high position carotid plaque presented with severe pain in ipsilateral parotid region several days after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The pain occurred at the first bite of each meal and resolved as further bite. We diagnosed the pain as first bite syndrome (FBS). FBS is infrequent but known as a complication associated with parapharyngeal space surgery. The pain is characterized by sharp pain in the parotid region associated with mastication. The cause is unclear but thought to the result from sympathetic denervation of the parotid gland, followed by parasympathetic

First-bite syndrome complicating carotid endarterectomy: a case report and literature review.

First-bite syndrome (FBS) is an infrequently encountered complication of parapharyngeal space surgery. Patients experience excruciating pain in the ipsiltateral parotid gland region at the first bite of each meal, which improves with subsequent mastication. This is thought to be due to parotid gland sympathetic denervation from surgery with resultant hypersensitivity to parasympathetic impulses. There is no consensus on best treatment for FBS although symptoms tend to improve with time. There are only 2 case reports linking carotid endarterectomy and FBS so far. We report the third case of FBS

Parasympathetic inhibition of sympathetic neural activity to the pancreas.

The present study tested the hypothesis that activation of the parasympathetic nervous system could attenuate sympathetic activation to the pancreas. To test this hypothesis, we measured pancreatic norepinephrine (NE) spillover (PNESO) in anesthetized dogs during bilateral thoracic sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS; 8 Hz, 1 ms, 10 mA, 10 min) with and without (randomized design) simultaneous bilateral cervical vagal nerve stimulation (VNS; 8 Hz, 1 ms, 10 mA, 10 min). During SNS alone, PNESO increased from the baseline of 431 +/- 88 pg/min to an average of 5,137 +/- 1,075 pg/min (P < 0.05) ove…

Sympathetic decentralization abolishes increased secretion of immunoglobulin A evoked by parasympathetic stimulation of rat submandibular glands.

Salivary secretion of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in response to electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve supply was assessed bilaterally in the submandibular glands of anaesthetized rats 1 week following unilateral pre-ganglionic sympathectomy (decentralization). Nerve-mediated stimulation on the non-denervated side increased IgA secretion several fold above an unstimulated rate of secretion whereas sympathetic decentralization reduced the parasympathetically stimulated secretion of IgA without affecting the basal rate. Glandular levels of IgA were increased following decentralization c

Evaluation of the autonomic nervous system of the heart in male patients with mitral valve prolapse syndrome using respiratory sinus arrhythmia and dynamic exercise.

The autonomic nervous system of the heart was evaluated in two male groups composed of 11 patients with mitral valve prolapse and of 10 normal subjects, using the heart rate response in two types of tests: respiratory sinus arrhythmia at rest and dynamic exercise. Sinus arrhythmia was of higher magnitude in patients with mitral valve prolapse when compared to the control group; however, the differences reached statistical significance only at a respiratory frequency of 7 cycles/min. With respect to dynamic exercise (25, 50, 100, 150 W during 4 min), the heart rate response, either in terms of

[Studies on the in vivo pacemaker potentials of the canine renal pelvis].

In vivo pacemaker potentials of canine renal pelvis were able to be recorded by our new method. Potentials recorded at the pelvicalyceal region of canine renal pelvis in vivo had two phasic slow rising wave form that had duration of 0.2 sec, amplitude of 20 microV and discharge interval of about 5 sec. Furthermore, the discharge interval of ureter EMGs was a integral multiple of that of pacemaker potentials. In diuretic state by intravenous administration of furosemide, pacemaker potentials showed no change in wave form and discharge interval. However, ureter EMGs occurred more frequently to c
