OBJECTIVES: Parapharyngeal space tumors are rare and usually benign. Their treatment is surgical and many approaches have been described. We report our experience in managing these neoplasms. Two points are developed more fully: the correlation between imaging and surgical observation and the reliability of the cervical approach.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of primary parapharyngeal space tumors treated at the Rennes University Hospital between 1992 and 2004 is presented. Nine patients were included, all treated surgically with a cervical approach without parotidectomy.

The Warthin tumor represents the second most frequent benign tumor of the parotid gland and is characterized by the presence of oncocytes rich in structurally and functionally altered mitochondria. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma usually presents with enlargement of upper cervical lymph nodes, epistaxis, postnasal discharge, aural symptoms or cranial nerve palsy. Parotid swelling as the first and presenting symptom creates a diagnostic problem to both clinicians and pathologists. The authors report here two such cases to draw attention to this diagnostic problem and discuss the therapeutic implications.

Warthin's tumour has always been considered a peculiar neoplasm with specific anatomico-pathological characteristics. In this study we argue that it should not be considered a true neoplasm but simply an inflammatory process which is triggered by the indiscriminate use of tobacco and involves the parotid duct. BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper was to know the epidemiological characteristics of the salivary gland tumors in a Mexican population.
METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was performed. All cases of salivary gland tumor were collected in a period of 5 years (2009-2014) in two hospitals of our State, the Hospital General de Veracruz and the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad y Hospital de Especialidades No. 14, with the study of variables like: age, gender, location, biological behavior and histological type. The series studied included a total of 79 cases.

We presented the case of a patient with a slowly developing right parotid tumor over the course of several years. Multimodal ultrasonography proved relevant for malignancy. Subsequent imaging identified tumors in numerous organs, considered metastases. Ultrasonography consolidated all identified aspects. Biopsy from an adrenal mass and histological examination evidenced the presence of a malignant, metastatic melanoma with cutaneous origin. Considerations are made regarding the role of ultrasonography in such cases.
