SMILE for the Treatment of Residual Refractive Error After Cataract Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: In the context of managing patients' expectations and satisfaction regarding visual acuity after cataract surgery, we aimed to investigate the improvement in visual acuity and patient satisfaction after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in pseudophakic (trifocal intraocular lens, IOL) patients with residual myopic refraction after cataract surgery. METHODS: Seventy-six patients (82 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery with ZEISS AT LISA tri 839MP IOL implantation were included in this retrospective study. The included patients were 56-79 years old, wanted spectacle ind

Pars plana lensectomy in cases of cataract with juvenile chronic uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Classical cataract extraction in young patients with secondary cataract following juvenile chronic uveitis often is complicated by serious problems such as severe postoperative uveitis, hypotonia oculi and phthisis bulbi. Lensectomy with partial anterior vitrectomy might be a less inflammatory way of handling these cases. METHODS: Over a 15-year period we have treated 10 eyes of 9 young patients (age from 8 to 30 years) with secondary cataract after chronic uveitis by pars plana lensectomy with partial anterior vitrectomy. A classical two-port technique was used with incisions at

Endogenous endophthalmitis due to Listeria monocytogenes.

The authors report a case of Listeria monocytogenes endophthalmitis in a patient who had undergone cardiac revascularization surgery and was receiving systemic corticosteroids. The organism was isolated both in the aqueous humor and in blood culture. The infection was successfully treated with intravenous crystalline penicillin, but the patient developed a bullous keratopathy and secondary glaucoma, resulting in poor visual acuity (counting fingers at 0.5 m). The visual acuity recovered to 20/30 after a penetrating keratoplasty and the glaucoma was controlled with a Molteno implant and a trabe

[Excimer laser-assisted penetrating keratoplasty for stromal scarring after epikeratoplasty].

BACKGROUND: Epikeratoplasty was previously used as a treatment option for correcting high myopia and keratoconus; however, structural complications, including interface scarring, surface irregularities and corneal ectasia, are not uncommon during follow-up. CASE: A 55-year-old male patient presented with decreased visual acuity in the right eye. He had undergone an epikeratoplasty in South Korea 34 years earlier to improve visual acuity due to high myopia. As the postoperative visual acuity remained inadequate, an additional photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was performed at a later stage. In

Topical brinzolamide in congenital nystagmus: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of treatment with topical brinzolamide on visual acuity and nystagmus intensity in patients with congenital nystagmus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was designed in which the clinical records of 14 patients with congenital nystagmus were reviewed. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination and a Perea video-oculography (VOG) before, and three days after, initiation of treatment with topical brinzolamide (Azopt). Five expert researchers evaluated the intensity of nystagmus by video before and after treatment. Finally, the subj

Comparison of clinical findings in pediatric patients with albinism and different amplitudes of nystagmus.

INTRODUCTION: Visual acuity in albinism can vary and is difficult to predict. We undertook this study to investigate whether patients with albinism with absent or minimal nystagmus have better visual acuity and ocular alignment than patients with albinism and obvious nystagmus. METHODS: Our retrospective chart review of 38 pediatric patients with albinism yielded 16 patients with absent or minimal nystagmus and 22 patients with obvious nystagmus. RESULTS: Patients with albinism and absent or minimal nystagmus had best-corrected visual acuities ranging from 20/20 to 20/50, with a mean visual

A Case of Closure of Recurrent Full-Thickness Macular Hole by Spontaneous Retinal Detachment around the Macular Hole and Gas Tamponade.

INTRODUCTION: Here, we present a case of full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) recurrence following two vitrectomies, accompanied by additional internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and gas tamponade. Ultimately, FTMH closure was accomplished by spontaneous retinal detachment around the macular hole and gas tamponade alone. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 54-year-old woman with a lamellar macular hole, had a visual acuity of 20/100 in her left eye. The treatment regimen included cataract surgery, a 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy involving ILM peeling, application of the lamellar hole epiret

Eye injury and demographic parameters associated with poor visual outcome.

BACKGROUND: Eye injuries can result in long-term disability, and healthcare providers need better tools to predict outcomes. Few prognostic models for poor visual acuity have been examined using variables usually present in very severe injuries, which creates a gap in prognosis. Therefore, a model associated with severe and less severe injuries is examined. METHODS: Eye injuries hospitalized in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2006 through 2014 were included. A total of 258 eye injuries met the inclusion criteria of being an acute mechanical, chemical or physical eye injury. Prognostic variables w

Predicting visual outcomes in patients treated with aflibercept for neovascular age-related macular degeneration: Data from a real-world clinical setting.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There is a significant variation in the way neovascular age-related macular degeneration patients respond to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment. Both the financial and time cost of treatment are significant. As such, being able to predict patient response to treatment is valuable. SUBJECTS/METHODS: 72 eyes treated with intravitreal aflibercept were retrospectively included in analysis. For each subject, visual acuity (letters) and central retinal thickness (µm) at baseline, second, third and fourth visits, as well as 12-month visits, were collated; a plot

[Descemetectomy as therapy option for visually disturbing roll in Descemet's membrane].

PURPOSE: The aim was to demonstrate the feasibility of targeted removal of a central visually disturbing roll in Descemet's membrane after complicated cataract surgery. CASE REPORT: a 76-year-old patient complained of halos and reduced visual acuity after external cataract surgery. At slit-lamp examination a central roll in Descemet's membrane was found (2 × 2 mm). RESULTS: A targeted central descemetectomy was performed by circular descemetorhexis around the defect. Early postoperative visual acuity improved and halos disappeared. At 2 months postoperatively best corrected visual acuity (BC

[Application of the Salzburg reading desk in accommodation and presbyopic research].

The determination of reading acuity is still the most important clinical examination, whenever the potential benefits of "presbyopic surgery" are compared. Reading distance--the by far most critical parameter in testing reading acuity--seems to be quite variable for every patient tested, whenever patients are allowed to freely choose a subjectively convenient reading distance. Therefore, measuring reading acuity with a fixed reading distance does not allow conclusions to be drawn on the "every-day reading ability" of individual patients. Since 2004, the Eye Clinic of Salzburg University has be

Temporal contrast sensitivity in optic neuritis and amblyopia.

Temporal contrast sensitivity was measured in patients with optic neuritis and anisometropic amblyopia. In optic neuritis, attenuated sensitivity was detected at all frequency ranges; however, its degree was more severe than that of retinal diseases even when visual acuity was the same. At the convalescent stage, the low-frequency sensitivity was restored first, and high-frequency loss was observed even when the visual acuity was restored to 1.0. Two amblyopic patients showed attenuated sensitivity at high- and intermediate-frequency ranges, and in one case all frequency sensitivity attenuated

Behavioral, Learning Skills, and Visual Improvement in Crouzon Syndrome Patient Following Late Posterior Vault Distraction Osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: It is well accepted among craniofacial surgeons that surgery does not improve mental status but does prevent worsening or deterioration of cognitive and mental function. In this report, we describe significant improvement in behavioral, learning skills and visual acuity for a Crouzon patient who underwent late posteriorvault distraction osteogenesis. METHODS: A 9-year-old Crouzon patient was referred to our hospital, presenting severe intracranial hypertension. The patient had previously undergone a strip craniectomy in early infancy at another medical institution, but there was n
