Improved single-letter identification after whole-word training in pure alexia.

Pure alexia is characterised by a very time-consuming letter-by-letter reading strategy due to an impaired identification or integration of single letters. So far, therapy interventions have addressed impaired letter identification using specific single-letter training approaches. In the present study, we report patient KA with pure alexia and letter-by-letter reading. Contrary to common approaches, we investigated whether a whole-word reading approach can be successful despite severe impairments at the level of single-letter identification. As a first step, auditory-visual verification tasks

The role of local and global processing in the recognition of living and nonliving things.

We report a study on a patient (DW) with integrative visual agnosia and a category-specific recognition impairment for living things. We assessed DW's local and global processing and tested if his integrative agnosia could have led directly to his category-specific impairment. The main findings were: (i) DW was faster at identifying local compared to global letters. (ii) DW showed no local-to-global (or global-to-local) interference effects in selective attention tasks. (iii) DW showed a congruency effect in a divided attention task, suggesting that, when his attention was cued to both levels,

Emotion and object processing in Parkinson's disease.

The neuropsychological literature on the processing of emotions in Parkinson's disease (PD) reveals conflicting evidence about the role of the basal ganglia in the recognition of facial emotions. Hence, the present study had two objectives. One was to determine the extent to which the visual processing of emotions and objects differs in PD. The other was to assess the impact of cognitive load on the processing of these types of information. Thirty-one patients with idiopathic PD (IPD) under dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) were compared to 30 control subjects on emotion and object recognitio

Serial dependence is stronger for peripheral than for central vision.

Serial dependence in vision refers to the fact that perceptual judgements are biased by earlier experiences, and has been thought to reduce sensory uncertainty and sustain perceptual continuity over time and space. While vision changes with eccentricity, little is known about if and how serial dependence differs in the periphery relative to fovea. Here we aimed to reduce this gap by comparing serial dependence for centrally and peripherally presented stimuli. Experiment 1 presents a reanalysis of an existing dataset from an earlier working memory task requiring the memorization of differently

Interaction of optical parameters in the perception of transparency/translucency and their neural representation in the visual cortex.

Transparency and translucency are important visual attributes that serve as cues for object recognition and discrimination. The interaction between light and objects involves complex processes encompassing multiple factors. In this study, we systematically manipulated parameters of light transmission, scattering, and reflection to investigate their effects on perceived transparency/translucency in human subjects. We found that the extinction coefficient, a parameter governing transmission, exerts the greatest influence on perceived transparency/translucency across objects of varying shape comp

Visual Cortical Lateralization in Activations and Functional Connectivity to the Sight of Faces, Scenes, Body Parts, and Tools.

The lateralization of cortical activations and functional connectivities was analyzed when 833 Human Connectome Project (HCP) right-handed participants were viewing faces, spatial scenes, body parts, and tools, using the HCP-Multimodal Parcellation atlas. Spatial scenes produce stronger activations (Bonferroni corrected) in the right hemisphere, especially in the ventromedial visual cortical stream from early visual cortical regions via ventromedial visual cortical regions (VMV1-3) and medial parahippocampal regions (PHA1-3) to the hippocampus, and in inferior parietal visual cortical regions

From retinotopic to ordinal coding: Dissecting the cortical stages of visual word recognition.

Fluent reading requires the brain to precisely encode the positions of letters within words, distinguishing for instance FORM and FROM across variations in size, position, and font. Early visual areas, however, are known to encode retinotopic positions, and how these representations get transformed into a position-invariant neural code remains unclear. Building upon a computational model of reading, we used 7T functional MRI and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to reveal a cortical hierarchy in which early visual areas (V1-V4) predominantly encode retinotopic information, whereas higher-level regi

The processing of multiple letters and multiple words in deaf adults.

Readers utilize both foveal and parafoveal information to recognize letters and words effectively. In the fovea, the ability to identify letters is maximized, resulting in greater accuracy for letters that are directly fixated upon. Conversely, the accuracy of letter identification diminishes in the parafovea. Notably, letters at the beginning and end of words are often recognized more accurately than those in the middle, which yields a W-shaped function in identification accuracy and an M-shaped function in response times. Building upon these observations, word identification rates are higher

Investigating the crowding effect on letters and symbols in deaf adults.

Reading requires the transformation of a complex array of visual features into sounds and meaning. For deaf signers who experience changes in visual attention and have little or no access to the sounds of the language they read, understanding the visual constraints underlying reading is crucial. This study aims to explore a fundamental aspect of visual perception intertwined with reading: the crowding effect. This effect manifests as the struggle to distinguish a target letter when surrounded by flanker letters. Through a two-alternative forced choice task, we assessed the recognition of lette

Holistic Integration in the Processing of Chinese Characters as Revealed by Electroencephalography Frequency Tagging.

It is debated whether perceptual expertise of nonface objects, such as visual words, is indicated by holistic processing, which is regarded as a marker of perceptual expertise of faces. We address this question by frequency-tagged electroencephalography. Different parts of real or pseudo Chinese characters are presented at distinctive frequencies (6 or 7.2 Hz), which induce frequency-tagged steady-state visual-evoked potentials at occipital brain areas. The intermodulation response (e.g., 6 + 7.2 = 13.2 Hz) would emerge when holistic integration takes place. Our results suggest that the interm

Attentional capture by incongruent object/background scenes in patients with Alzheimer disease.

AIM: Object/background association is critical to understand the context of visual scenes but also in daily life tasks like object search. Patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) exhibit impairment in scene processing at different levels: perception, recognition, memory and spatial navigation. We explored whether patients with AD make use of contextual information in congruent and incongruent target/background conditions in three different saccadic choice tasks. EXPERIMENT: We recruited 36 participants (12 young, 12 patients with AD at a moderate stage and 12 age-matched controls). Pairs of scen

A perceptual learning deficit in Chinese developmental dyslexia as revealed by visual texture discrimination training.

Learning to read involves discriminating between different written forms and establishing connections with phonology and semantics. This process may be partially built upon visual perceptual learning, during which the ability to process the attributes of visual stimuli progressively improves with practice. The present study investigated to what extent Chinese children with developmental dyslexia have deficits in perceptual learning by using a texture discrimination task, in which participants were asked to discriminate the orientation of target bars. Experiment l demonstrated that, when all of

Strange-face illusions during inter-subjective gazing.

In normal observers, gazing at one's own face in the mirror for a few minutes, at a low illumination level, triggers the perception of strange faces, a new visual illusion that has been named 'strange-face in the mirror'. Individuals see huge distortions of their own faces, but they often see monstrous beings, archetypal faces, faces of relatives and deceased, and animals. In the experiment described here, strange-face illusions were perceived when two individuals, in a dimly lit room, gazed at each other in the face. Inter-subjective gazing compared to mirror-gazing produced a higher number o

Automatic top-down processing explains common left occipito-temporal responses to visual words and objects.

Previous studies have demonstrated that a region in the left ventral occipito-temporal (LvOT) cortex is highly selective to the visual forms of written words and objects relative to closely matched visual stimuli. Here, we investigated why LvOT activation is not higher for reading than picture naming even though written words and pictures of objects have grossly different visual forms. To compare neuronal responses for words and pictures within the same LvOT area, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation and instructed participants to name target stimuli that followed briefly p

A putative model of multisensory object representation.

This review surveys the recent literature on visuo-haptic convergence in the perception of object form, with particular reference to the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and discusses how visual imagery or multisensory representations might underlie this convergence. Drawing on a recent distinction between object- and spatially-based visual imagery, we propose a putative model in which LOtv, a subregion of LOC, contains a modality-independent representation of geometric shape that can be accessed either bottom-up from direct sensory inputs or top-down from fro

Spatial property of motion visual evoked potentials.

The cortical evoked response to drifting patterns (motion visual evoked potentials) was investigated. When the direction of motion of the stimulus pattern was reversed upward or downward at intervals, the cortical evoked response was triggered at the moment when the pattern changed direction. The polarity reversal of the main negative component occurred between upper and lower visual field stimulations as seen in pattern reversal visual evoked potentials. Our study indicates these potentials have a compound property reflecting the visual field.

Pattern electroretinogram and optic nerve topography in ocular hypertension.

It is known that changes in pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and optic disk morphology may both precede the onset of visual field damage in glaucomatous disease. However, the relationship between PERG and optic disk morphometry in ocular hypertension (OHT) has not yet been evaluated in detail. This study of PERG amplitude in a group of OHT patients indicates its significant correlation with various optic disk morphometric parameters, in particular, those of optic disk sectors considered at risk for early glaucomatous damage. Analysis of individual data points to the possibility that, while fun

A neurological dissociation between preserved visual and impaired spatial processing in mental imagery.

Studies on primates have shown that visual and spatial perceptual analysis depends on two separate neural pathways, associated with the processing of "what" and "where" an object is (visual characteristics and spatial coordinates, respectively). Similar dichotomies have been proposed by cognitive psychologists (e.g., the contrast between visual and spatial processing in working memory) and by neuropsychologists (e.g., the distinction between topographic agnosia and amnesia). In this paper we report the case of a patient with a severe spatial disorientation whose perceptual processing of visual

Light and dark adaptation of visually perceived eye level controlled by visual pitch.

The pitch of a visual field systematically influences the elevation at which a monocularly viewing subject sets a target so as to appear at visually perceived eye level (VPEL). The deviation of the setting from true eye level average approximately 0.6 times the angle of pitch while viewing a fully illuminated complexly structured visual field and is only slightly less with one or two pitched-from-vertical lines in a dark field (Matin & Li, 1994a). The deviation of VPEL from baseline following 20 min of dark adaptation reaches its full value less than 1 min after the onset of illumination of th

Pattern electroretinograms from hemifields in normal subjects and patients with glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Because glaucomatous visual field loss predominantly occurs in one hemifield, a baseline ratio of pattern electroretinogram (PERG) hemifield amplitudes (upper field:lower field) was determined in normal subjects and then examined in patients with glaucoma. METHODS: In 26 normal subjects and eight patients with glaucoma with typical arcuate field loss involving the test area (central 20 degrees), hemifield PERGs were recorded using checkerboard screens of check size 0.5 degrees and frequency 3.75 reversals per second (transient) and 15 reversals per second (steady state).
