The growth rates of young chicks were varied from 0 to 10% per day by manipulation of the adequacy of the amino acid and energy supply. The rates of protein synthesis in the white breast (pectoralis thoracica) muscle and the dark leg (gastrocnemius and peronaeus longus) muscles were estimated by feeding l-[U-(14)C]tyrosine in amino acid/agar-gel diets (;dietary infusion'). This treatment rapidly and consistently produced an isotopic equilibrium in the expired CO(2) and in the free tyrosine of plasma and the muscles. Wholebody protein synthesis in 2-week-old chicks was estimated from the tyrosi

Poland's syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by unilateral chest wall hypoplasia and ipsilateral hand abnormalities. The literature data suggest its sporadic nature. The prevailing theory concerning its cause is hypoplasia of the subclavian artery or its branches, which may lead to a range of developmental changes. Relationships have been demonstrated between tumours and Poland's syndrome and also between tumours and other developmental defects. The explanation may lie in abnormal homeobox and tumour suppressor genes. This paper presents the first literature report of a maligna

A 33-year-old African-American woman with a severe manifestation of Poland syndrome developed breast cancer in the ipsilateral breast. She had a severely hypoplastic upper extremity, including symbrachydactyly, and a hypoplastic forearm and upper arm. In addition, she lacked the sternal origin of the pectoralis muscle. She had a very small nipple-areola complex and no axillary hair. This is the first case report of breast cancer developing in the ipsilateral breast of a patient with Poland syndrome.

14 samples of the Musculus pectoralis major from patients with early stages of breast cancer and 3 samples from patients with nonmalignant mammary diseases were stored in liquid nitrogen and investigated histologically, histochemically and histometrically. Main changes are lipomatosis, fibre necrosis, occasionally perifascicular atrophy, metabolic changes (e.g. accumulation of lipids), and alterations of the activity of oxidative enzymes. Histometrically we found an atrophy of type 2-fibres. There may be relations between the degree of the muscle changes and the severity of the tumour disease.

A 45-year-old woman, who had endoscopic parathyroidectomy 5 years ago for a right inferior parathyroid adenoma, underwent 99mTc-MIBI scan for the evaluation of recurrent parathyroidism. The images did not identify any abnormal uptake in the neck. Instead, an abnormal activity in the right upper chest wall was noted, which was located in a soft tissue nodule inseparable from the right pectoralis major muscle on SPECT/CT images. Pathology confirmed parathyroid tissue.

We will describe a second phase of breast reconstruction on a young girl suffering from Poland syndrome. She has the breast, pectoralis major and minor muscle aplasia on the right side. She has no other deformities. The best result is achieved by combining latissimus dorsi flap and a silicone implant, and even better aesthetic result is accomplished with endoscopically assisted latissimus dorsi harvesting. Purpose of this operation is to correct the chest asymmetry and to accomplish good aesthetic result.

Poland Sequence consists of a congenital absence of the pectoralis major muscle. Classically, the sequence also includes ipsilateral hand anomalies. Identified patients may be screened for renal and other anomalies. The condition results in physical and cosmetic disabilities which can be treated if properly triaged. The chest wall anatomy may be delineated with computed tomography and MRI if surgery is planned. Two cases with unusual findings including lumbosacral spine malformation and contralateral hand syndactyly are presented.

A staged reconstructive procedure is described for the reconstruction of the entire thoracic esophagus. All primary alternatives for esophageal reconstruction were not applicable. The patient's thoracic esophagus was successfully reconstructed in two stages with a lined pectoralis major muscle tube, and it remains, eight months postoperatively, in good general condition without clinical or radiological evidence of any fistula, stricture, or obstruction. He enjoys an oral diet without restrictions and has gained a total of 19 pounds in the postoperative period.

Histochemical and electron microscopic studies of biceps femoris, pectoralis major and rectus femoris of chronically treated birds with seeds of the poisonous plant Senna occidentalis (0.2% external/internal tegment), were performed. The muscles had similar features of human mitochondrial myopathy as ragged-red fibers, cytochrome-oxidase negative fibers, and weak activity of the oxidative enzymes. Fibers with lipid storage were also present. Acid phosphatase activity in rare muscle fibers was also detected, and represents probably a secondary degenerative process. By electron microscopy, enlar

Hemiplegia is the classic condition resulting from a stroke. To assist in recovery, the overflow method can be employed to stimulate the affected limb, using the healthy contralateral lower limb (LL) to activate the plegic upper limb (UL) musculature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of overflow using the PNF method on the plegic upper limb muscles of post-stroke individuals in the acute and chronic stages, as well as on the muscles of healthy individuals. A total of 22 individuals participated in the work, comprising 8 healthy individuals (control group), 6 post-stro

RATIONALE: Typically, the tendon of the pectoralis major inserts into the crest of the greater tubercle of the humerus. However, anomalous insertion sites of the pectoralis major tendons have been noted.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The cadaver of a 95-year-old Japanese man was selected from the bodies used for gross anatomy practice at the Tokai University School of Medicine in 2018.
DIAGNOSIS: In this cadaver, the left side of the pectoralis major tendon appeared to insert at the crest of the greater tubercle and lesser tubercle of the humerus, forming a tunnel measuring 2.5 cm in total length.

The fact that woody breast (WB) is currently detected only post-mortem limits our understanding of this economically relevant broiler myopathy. We aimed to determine whether restricted wing movement could serve as a non-invasive indicator of WB in live birds, and whether it would affect a broiler's ability to self-right. We tested 58 fast growth broilers across three commercial farms within two days of market age (45-52 days of age). Broilers were categorized based on the distance between the glenohumeral joints measured to the nearest half centimeter across the back while the wings were exten

BACKGROUND: To date, few comparative studies exist for partial hypopharyngeal defect reconstruction following total laryngectomy. In the absence of objective evidence from comparative studies, the ideal flap choice remains controversial, leading to heterogeneity in institutional treatment protocols. Comparative studies between different reconstructive techniques are required. Therefore, this study compared postoperative outcomes of pectoralis major myocutaneous (PMMC) and myofascial (PMMF) flaps.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study was performed between 2000 and 2022, which in

The Guangxi Partridge chicken is a well-known chicken breed in southern China with good meat quality, which has been bred as a meat breed to satisfy the increased demand of consumers. Compared with line D whose body weight is maintained at the average of the unselected group, the growth rate and weight of the selected chicken group (line S) increased significantly after breeding for four generations. Herein, transcriptome analysis was performed to identify pivotal genes and signal pathways of selective breeding that contributed to potential mechanisms of growth and development under artificial

Isolated atrophy of the pectoralis major muscle (PMM) secondary to traumatic lesion of the medial pectoral nerve is a known entity in the field of neuromuscular electrodiagnostics. Recent literature has begun describing a Pectoral Gap Phenomenon in which this atrophy occurs bilaterally as an overuse injury, leading to a marked concavity in the central chest wall musculature. While there is limited information in science journals on this topic, social media posts on weight lifting discuss the topic frequently. We report a case in which a soldier's body armor crushed the lateral medial and pecto

In wooden breast myopathy (WBM) of broiler chickens, the pectoralis major muscles show abnormally hard consistency and microscopical myodegeneration of unknown aetiology. To date, previous studies have focused primarily on chronic WBM and ultrastructural descriptions of early WBM are lacking. The aim of this study was to elucidate the pathogenesis of WBM by light microscopical morphometry of vessel density and the ultrastructural description of early WBM changes with transmission electron microscopy. The pectoral vessel density was compared between unaffected chickens (n = 14) and two areas of

A 53-year-old man with Marfan's syndrome was admitted for repair of annulo-aortic ectasia (58 mm). He had also severe pectus excavatum. The skin was incised along the sternal midline. The pectoral muscles were detached laterally. After the perichondrium and costal cartilages were resected bilaterally. the left-sided intercostal muscles and perichondrial sheaths were divided 3 cm lateral to the sternum. To place the retractor in parasternal position, excellent exposure of the heart and aortic root was enabled. The aortic root was replaced with a Carboseal graft. Chest wall reconstructions was c
