Negative feelings exacerbate hostile attributions of intent in highly aggressive boys.

Tested the hypothesis that aggressive boys' tendency to attribute hostile intentions to peers is exacerbated in a negative emotional state. Twenty-nine highly aggressive boys in special education, 12 moderately aggressive boys in regular education, and 16 nonaggressive boys in regular education inferred peers' intentions in 8 vignettes concerning ambiguous provocation by peers. Mild negative emotions were induced by unjust loss of a manipulated computer game. Half the vignettes were completed in this negative emotional state. After completion of all vignettes, the game was played again and won

Disruptive behavior disorders and substance use disorders in adolescents.

Disruptive behaviors disorders in the form of conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder and/or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are found in a majority of adolescents with substance use disorders These disorders influence the risk for and the course of substance use disorders in adolescents and potentially provide important targets for intervention. Interventions such as family therapy and multisystemic therapy can focus on important environmental factors that help to produce and sustain substance use, related problems and disruptive/deviant social behavior. Male Peer Support to Hostile Sexist Attitudes Influences Rape Proclivity.

Sexual assault affects a large proportion of women in the world. Although most rapes are committed by one man, the act itself may be influenced by many (e.g., the peer group). Hostile sexism (HS) has repeatedly been associated with men's rape proclivity, but the influence exerted by the HS of the peer group on rape proclivity has not been investigated. In this study, we explored the impact of perceived male peer support to HS on participants' rape proclivity. A sample of Spanish undergraduate students from a university in the south of Spain ( N = 134) completed the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory.…

Developing a scholarship community.

PURPOSE: To report the results of a multidisciplinary, interinstitutional writing support group established to facilitate faculty scholarly productivity. ORGANIZING CONCEPT: The road to scholarship can be filled with many obstacles, among them time constraints, teaching and meeting demands, student needs, office interruptions, and lack of colleagueship. The problems associated with lack of colleagueship, in particular, can be compounded for faculty who work in isolated contexts with few, if any, senior faculty to serve as mentors. METHODS OF DEVELOPMENT: The Western Writers Coercion Group evol

The Interplay among BMI z-Score, Peer Victmization, and Self-Concept in Outpatient Children and Adolescents with Overweight or Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Research has provided evidence that obesity is associated with peer victimization and low levels of self-concept. No study has examined the relationship between BMI z-score, self-concept in multiple domains, and peer victimization. METHODS: The aim of the research was to investigate the interplay between BMI z-score, self-concept in multiple domains (physical, athletic, social), and peer victimization, testing direct, mediated, and moderated associations. Eighty hundred fifteen outpatient children and adolescents were consecutively recruited in 14 hospitals distributed over the It

Testing the efficacy and mechanisms of an SMS intervention focused on motivating peer network support to reduce alcohol consumption in non-collegiate young adults: Protocol for a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-collegiate young adults engage in high rates of heavy drinking but are less likely to access alcohol-related counseling or treatment. Peers play a significant role in shaping drinking behavior, yet few interventions target close peer influence in this population. METHODS: This two-arm randomized controlled trial will enroll 300 young adults aged 18-25 who report 2+ heavy drinking days (HDD; defined as 4+ drinks for a woman and 5+ drinks for a man) in the past 30 days and are not enrolled in college. Participants are randomized (1:1) to receive either (1) an SMS intervention fo

Beyond delinquency and drug use: Links of peer pressure to long-term adolescent psychosocial development.

This study examined the predictors and sequelae of exposure to peer pressure from close friends in adolescence. Adolescents (99 female; 85 male) were followed from age 13 to 24 utilizing peer, parent, and romantic partner reports and observational data. Participants who were exposed to high levels of peer pressure as teens were more likely to experience higher levels of coercive behavior from romantic partners (as reported by those partners), as well as lower levels of parent-reported functional independence. All findings held even after accounting for baseline levels of teen assertiveness. Ad

Understanding Substance Use in Alaska Native Youth- A Social Network Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Alaska Native (AN) youth and their communities experience many health inequities, including increased rates of substance use. AN youth have earlier initiation and heavier use of substances compared to other youth, with over half of AN youth having engaged in use by 13. While prior research has examined risk factors, few studies have evaluated how social network structures may protect against substance use in youth. This study used social network analysis to examine associations between peer ties, connections with school staff, cultural connectedness, victimization, and substance us

Patient narratives in an online hernia peer-support community: a qualitative netnographic analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore how individuals with hernia engage with online peer-support communities and how their shared narratives reflect the experience of living with and seeking treatment for hernia. METHODS: A qualitative netnographic approach was employed, analysing posts from a large online hernia support group with approximately 8,500 members across more than 10 countries. The group was selected following scoping of alternative online communities because of its size, activity, heterogeneity, and public accessibility. A purposive sample of 26 high-engagement discussion threads

Organized after-school activities and Asian American high school students' Asian American identity and Asian American racial identity ideological values.

The present study qualitatively examined how Asian American college students thought their participation in organized after-school activities during high school was related to their Asian American identity and Asian American racial identity ideological values. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 25 Asian American-identifying undergraduate students (80% female, 96% U.S.-born) enrolled in a 4-year, public university in Southern California. Thematic analysis, employing both inductive and deductive approaches, identified two key mechanisms through which Asian American colleg

Redefining Masculinity in a Web-Based Peer Support Program for Husbands of Women With Gynecologic or Breast Cancers in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Diagnoses of gynecologic and breast cancers in women may impose emotional and psychological burdens on their partners. Traditional notions of masculinity in Nigeria often discourage men from expressing vulnerability or seeking emotional support. This article explores the impact of a web-based peer support program on redefining masculinity among male partners of women diagnosed with these cancers. OBJECTIVES: The study assesses how digital peer support groups facilitate emotional expression, reduce isolation, and promote a redefined, supportive masculinity that embraces empathy, vu

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Motivation-Based Social Skills Group Treatment with Parent Training.

Despite the popularity of social skills groups, there remains a need for empirical investigation of treatment effects, especially when targeting pivotal aspects of social functioning such as initiations to peers. The goal of the present study was to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a 12-week social intervention (SUCCESS), which combined an inclusive social group with a parent education program. Twenty-five 4- to 6-year-olds with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were randomized to SUCCESS (N = 11) or to treatment as usual (N = 14). Combining a peer group model with a parent training progr…

Adolescents' offline meetings with online contacts: Longitudinal relationships between the behavior and perceptions of risks, benefits, and peer involvement.

Adolescents commonly meet new people online, and some later meet them in person. Such face-to-face meetings offer benefits alongside risks, which are emphasized in public discourse. Thus, adolescents' perceptions of how risky, beneficial, and normative the meetings are key to understanding their decisions to meet. Yet research on their effects is scarce and mostly cross-sectional. Drawing on the health belief model and the theory of planned behavior, this longitudinal study examines how perceived risk severity and likelihood, benefits likelihood, and peer involvement influence adolescents' fac

Peer-assisted telemedicine hepatitis-C treatment for people who use drugs in rural communities: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The increase in opioid use disorder among young, nonurban people has fueled sharp rises in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. Innovative treatment models are needed that circumvent healthcare system barriers for people who use drugs (PWUD), particularly in rural areas. The Oregon HOPE TeleHCV study randomized PWUD living with HCV in rural Oregon to peer-facilitated and streamlined telemedicine HCV treatment (Peer TeleHCV) versus enhanced usual care (EUC) and assessed sustained virologic response at 12 weeks post treatment (SVR12). Peer Support Specialists (peers) conducted HCV scr

Empowering sex workers? Critical reflections on peer-led risk-reduction workshops in Soweto, South Africa.

Background: Sex workers in South Africa face various forms of structural and interpersonal violence, including police violence, exclusion from health services, and stigmatization and marginalization within their communities. In an attempt to counteract the harmful health effects of criminalization and exclusion, risk-reduction workshops are a key component of HIV prevention programs globally. This paper offers a critical investigation of Creative Space workshops - a South African model of risk-reduction workshops for sex workers - taking place in Soweto, Johannesburg. Drawing on Paulo Freire's

Heterogeneity in Response during Multisystemic Therapy: Exploring Subgroups and Predictors.

Multiple studies have shown that Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is, at group level, an effective treatment for adolescents showing serious externalizing problem behavior. The current study expands previous research on MST by, first, examining whether subgroups of participants who respond differently to treatment could be identified. Second, we investigated if the different trajectories of change during MST could be predicted by individual (hostile attributions) and contextual (parental sense of parenting competence and deviant and prosocial peer involvement) pre-treatment factors. Participants we

Homeless Veterans' Use of Peer Mentors and Effects on Costs and Utilization in VA Clinics.

OBJECTIVES: The study compared health care utilization and costs among homeless veterans randomly assigned to peer mentors or usual care and described contacts with peer mentors. METHODS: Homeless patients at four Department of Veterans Affairs clinics were randomly assigned to a peer mentor (N=195) or to usual care (N=180). Administrative data on utilization and costs over a six-month follow-up were combined with peer mentors' reports of patient contacts. RESULTS: Most patients (87%) in the peer mentor group had at least one peer contact. Patients in this group spent the largest proportions

Key skills and challenges in one-on-one peer support for older adolescents and young adults with serious mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: Peer support for older adolescents and young adults has become increasingly available as a formal mental health service. Alongside this increasing availability has been a steady accumulation of studies examining the potential for peer support to lead to positive outcomes for peer support users. However, a consistent refrain from the literature on peer support is that research and practice are hampered by a lack of theory-based models that specify the activities and skills of specific peer support roles, and describe how skillful practice is linked to outcomes.
