Perceptions and Expectations: A Study on Prognostic Perception and Quality of Life in Patients With Metastatic Renal and Bladder Cancer.

PURPOSE: Durable complete response rates for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) and metastatic bladder cancer (mBC) are low despite new therapy. Palliative care focuses on life extension and quality of life (QoL), not cure. This study aims to investigate patients' perceptions of treatment outcomes in mRCC and mBC and to assess the influence of QoL and optimism levels on these perceptions. METHODS: From March 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024, a multicenter, cross-sectional online survey was carried out, targeting patients diagnosed with mRCC and mBC. The survey comprised structured questions …

Noise and adaptation in multistable perception: noise drives when to switch, adaptation determines percept choice.

We study the dynamics of perceptual switching in ambiguous visual scenes that admit more than two interpretations/percepts to gain insight i … he experiments. Noise and adaptation have both been shown to play roles in the dynamics of bistable perception. Here, tristable perception allows us to specify the roles of noise and adaptation in our model. Noise is critical in considering the time of a switch. On the other hand, adaptation mechanisms are critical in considering perceptual choice (in trista …

Patient Perception of Speech Outcomes: The Relationship Between Clinical Measures and Self-Perception of Speech Function Following Surgical Treatment for Oral Cancer.

PURPOSE: Treatment for oral cancer can result in speech impairments that can have varying impacts on patient quality of life. This study explored the relationship between clinical measures of speech impairment and the perception that patients had of this change in the early stage of recovery. METHOD: This was a quasi-experimental 1-group pre-post study design carried out on 10 patients with surgical intervention for oral cancer. Two clinical measures (word intelligibility and consonant phoneme error) and 2 patient-perception measures (Speech Handicap Index total score and Speech Handicap Inde…

Reading fluency and speech perception speed of beginning readers with persistent reading problems: the perception of initial stop consonants and consonant clusters.

This study investigated the role of speech perception accuracy and speed in fluent word decoding of reading disabled (RD) children. A same-different phoneme discrimination task with natural speech tested the perception of single consonants and consonant clusters by young but persistent RD children. RD children were slower than chronological age (CA) controls in recognizing identical sounds, suggesting less distinct phonemic categories. In addition, after controlling for phonetic similarity Tallal's (Brain Lang 9:182-198, 1980) fast transitions account of RD children's speech perception problem…

Amateur singers' advantage in Mandarin tone perception and imitation.

Musical advantage in speech perception has been widely studied for instrumentalists, but it remains unclear whether singers share this benefit. In speech production, although singers' superiority has been observed relative to non-musicians, little is known about how they achieve this advantage. To address these gaps, this study investigated (i) whether singers outperformed non-musicians in Mandarin tone perception and imitation, (ii) whether singers' potential advantage in imitation depended on auditory feedback, and (iii) whether both groups' imitation improved across repetitions. Singers and…

Can trigeminal sensations impact saltiness perception? A mini-review.

Many food companies have begun to reduce the salt content in their products due to health concerns; however, this reduction in salt content … as burning, heat, cooling, and fizziness. This trigeminal stimulation can potentially increase the perception of other tastes and odours. A relationship between trigeminal stimulants (e.g., capsaicin) and the perceived salty taste of food products has been identified. However, this effect on saltiness perception can often be eclipsed by accompanying undesir …

Shyness and Facial Emotion Perception: A Cross-Cultural Study.

The perception of emotional expression is influenced by cultural background and individual personality traits. This study examined whether the personality trait, shyness, moderated the relation between the intensity of facial emotional expressions and their perceived intensities from a cross-cultural perspective. The study included 160 young adult participants from Canada (White and East Asian) and Mainland China. Participants completed the Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale and rated the emotional intensity of same-race facial expressions (happiness, anger, fear, and sadness) at different intensity…

Convergent binocular stereo: Depth perception for humanoid robot vision.

The design of robotic binocular camera systems has been inspired by human vision, as has their use in humanoid robots. One aspect of this inspiration has yet to play a major role, namely, that humans determine depth using a convergent binocular imaging geometry with both eyes pointing at the same location. Although some robot heads have the functionality to use vergence and version movements and thus alter binocular imaging geometry, a method to exploit it for depth computation has not been explored. Even though to an observer, their motions and appearance might resemble that of humans, in det

Electrophysiological evidence that musical experience affects spatial auditory perception.

Musical experience is associated with enhanced auditory abilities, but it remains unclear how these benefits are expressed across different stages of spatial auditory processing. Therefore, we examined participants with and without musical experience using a spatial auditory oddball paradigm with multiple spatial deviations under both unattended and attended conditions. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials, and phase-locking value (PLV)-based functional connectivity were jointly analyzed to characterize spatial auditory processing at behavioral, local neural, and network levels. Nociceptive sensitization and pain perception are dissociable in humans.

Although pain and nociception are conceptually distinct, whether nociceptive sensitization can occur without pain remains unknown. Here, we show that convergent innocuous thermal stimulation elicits primary mechanical and secondary hyperalgesia without pain perception. In a preregistered study, we compared thermal grill illusion (TGI) responders (n = 96) and nonresponders (n = 64) by quantifying primary mechanical and secondary hyperalgesia following thermal grill stimulation. In responders, we further compared thermal grill-induced sensitization with that evoked by its innocuous component tem…

A comprehensive EEG dataset for investigating visual touch perception.

Visual touch perception is fundamental to body awareness and social bonding, helping us perceive ourselves and connect with others. However, understanding its neural basis has been limited by a lack of comprehensive public datasets. To address this, we present an electroencephalography (EEG) and self-report dataset from 80 participants. It includes neural responses from 2,880 trials per participant, during which participants viewed touch interactions between two hands involving either direct skin contact or object-mediated touch. Complementing the EEG data are self-report measures on empathy, …

Reduced Dissociation Between Perception and Action in Autistic Individuals.

PURPOSE: Changes in perceptual behaviors are a core phenotype of autism (in acknowledgment of the ongoing discourse regarding terminology about individuals diagnosed with autism, we use "autistic individuals" and “non-autistic individuals” in line with recent conventions), yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In order to explore this, we tested the hypothesis that these changes arise from reduced cortical specialization by examining the well-established functional dissociation between visual processing for perception and action. METHODS: We examined the effects of spatial context (Exp…

Overdriving Visual Depth Perception via Sound Modulation in VR.

Our ability to perceive and navigate the spatial world is a cornerstone of human experience, relying on the integration of visual and auditory cues to form a coherent sense of depth and distance. In stereoscopic 3D vision, depth perception requires fixation of both eyes on a target object, which is achieved through vergence movements, with convergence for near objects and divergence for distant ones. In contrast, auditory cues provide complementary depth information through variations in loudness, interaural differences (IAD), and the frequency spectrum. We investigate the interaction between …

Subtle to significant: Enhancing heaviness perception with stochastic resonance.

Dynamic touch allows individuals to perceive object properties such as weight and length through movement-based exploration. This study examined how subthreshold vibrotactile stimulation influences heaviness perception by leveraging the principles of stochastic resonance, which suggests that adding structured noise can enhance weak sensory signals. Specifically, we tested whether pink-noise stimulation (which mimics natural movement variability) improves perceptual accuracy more effectively than white noise or no stimulation. Ten participants completed wielding tasks while blindfolded, estimat…

Orientation ensemble perception is highly dependent on spatial attention.

The visual world is complex; however, we still access its richness despite computational limits in our visual system. Ensemble perception overcomes this bottleneck by extracting statistics, such as the mean, standard deviation, or other distributional characteristics, of feature sets like orientations or facial expressions, without processing each object individually. The role of attention in ensemble processing is debated: can we extract statistical information about a set when we do not attend to it? To address this question, we used the Posner cueing paradigm in which participants (N = 30, …

Beyond detoxification: xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes rewire mosquito sensory perception.

Mosquito olfaction regulates host-seeking, ecological adaptation, and vectorial capacity. Beyond the classical receptor-centric paradigm, we argue that xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes form a dynamic perireceptor layer that actively sculpts odor identity, signal intensity, and duration. This metabolism gain control mechanism may integrate olfactory sensitivity and behavioral plasticity within a unified sensory framework.

Dynamic, minimally invasive electrical brain stimulation improves speech perception.

Electrical brain stimulation (EBS) has been studied as a tool to improve speech perception. Available EBS methods compromise between precision and power and rarely consider temporal dynamics. Noninvasive EBS delivers currents to wide areas but may lack regional specificity and is susceptible to current shunting through the skin. We introduce a novel minimally-invasive electrical brain stimulation approach using clinically implanted epicranial electrodes and cranial bolts, circumventing the current shunting limitations of traditional transcranial stimulation. Two types of contacts were used in …
