Normalization of horizontal pseudoneglect following right, but not left, upper limb amputation.

OBJECTIVES: Subjects who have suffered limb amputations are known to have physiological alterations of their body's representation, or schema. Such changes of brain function might alter the right-left spatial allocation of attention. The goal of this study was to learn if, compared to normal subjects, limb amputees had alterations of right-left spatial attention. METHODS: The subjects were veterans with amputation of one upper or lower limb. All subjects performed horizontal line bisections in their left, middle and right body-centered space. RESULTS: Following right upper limb amputation, t

Masker phase effects in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners: evidence for peripheral compression at low signal frequencies.

The presence of cochlear-based compression at low frequencies was investigated by measuring phase effects in harmonic maskers. In normal-hearing listeners, the amount of masking produced depends strongly on the phase relationships between the individual masker components. This effect is thought to be determined primarily by properties of the cochlea, including the phase dispersion and compressive input-output function of the basilar membrane. Thresholds for signals of 250 and 1000 Hz were measured in harmonic maskers with fundamental frequencies of 12.5 and 100 Hz as a function of the masker p

[Tinnitus--classification, causes, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis].

Up to 45% of all adults in the industrialized countries are afflicted by noises in the ears--approximately one million people require treatment in Germany alone. Classification of tinnitus is oriented to the duration of symptoms and their severity, the latter taking into account the victim's distress both at work and during leisure time. Acute tinnitus is often caused by an ear condition or psychosocial stress. Chronic tinnitus can be caused by persistent exposure to noise, whiplash injuries or functional disorders of the cervical spine. The diagnosis is based on audiometric and otoneurologic

Effect of monaural and binaural altered auditory feedback on stuttering frequency.

The effect of monaural and binaural alterations in auditory feedback on stuttering frequency was investigated. Eleven participants who stutter read aloud under nonaltered auditory feedback (NAF) and monaural and binaural conditions of frequency altered feedback [(FAF), on-quarter octave shift upward] and delayed auditory feedback [(DAF), 50-ms delay] at a normal speech rate. Relative to the NAF condition, reductions in stuttering frequency of approximately 60%-75% were found with the altered auditory feedback conditions. Post hoc single-df comparisons revealed a reduction in stuttering frequen

Age-associated degeneration of backward masking task performance: evidence of declining temporal resolution abilities in normal listeners.

A backward masking paradigm was employed to investigate temporal resolution capabilities in normal-hearing subjects of increasing chronological age. Results have documented: (1) a 2-, 4-, 8-, and 11-fold decibel magnitude difference for averaged psychoacoustic functions when comparing data obtained from young adults to those of elderly listeners; (2) that backward masking function slopes become significantly steeper with age, especially at very short interstimulus intervals; (3) a significant interaction between age and target frequency; (4) a linear age-associated decrement in presumed tempor

The effect of interaural delay of the masker on masking-level differences in young and old adults.

Diotic (SoNo) thresholds and dichotic (S pi N pi tau) thresholds were measured for young and old adults using a 500-Hz pure-tone signal and broadband burst masking noise at 37 dB SPL/Hz. In the dichotic condition both the signal and the masker were phase reversed and the masker was presented with an interaural delay of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 3, or 5 ms. Masking-level differences (MLDs) were determined by subtracting dichotic thresholds from diotic thresholds. The SoNo thresholds for the old subjects did not differ significantly from those for the young subjects; however, when

Binaural hearing after middle ear surgery. Masking-level difference for interaural time and amplitude cues.

Previous investigations have shown that binaural hearing is often abnormal in patients having conductive hearing losses, and even in patients who have had hearing thresholds corrected by middle ear surgery. The present study assessed further the masking-level difference (MLD) in patients who had previously undergone middle ear surgery. The stimuli were chosen such that the sensitivity to interaural time difference cues and to interaural amplitude difference cues could be assessed independently. Results indicated that the MLD is abnormal in more than a third of 15 patients, even after surgery h

Susceptibility to intraspeech spread of masking in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.

Previous research with speechlike signals has suggested that upward spread of masking from the first formant (F 1) may interfere with the identification of place of articulation information signaled by changes in the upper formants. This suggestion was tested by presenting two-formant stop consonant--vowel syllables varying along a/ba--/da/--/ga/ continuum to hearing-impaired listeners grouped according to etiological basis of the disorder. The syllables were presented monaurally at 80 dB and 100 dB SPL when formant amplitudes were equal and when F 1 amplitude was reduced by 6, 12, and 18 dB.

Cortical speech-in-noise processing reflects subcortical syllable encoding and lexical attention.

Speech-in-noise performance varies among individuals with similar hearing sensitivity. Such variability may manifest as varying cortical representations of speech in noise, which may stem from peripheral sensory fidelity and the efficacy of top-down attention. The present study examined how subcortical speech-syllable encoding and lexical attention shape cortical speech-in-noise representation, as measured by neural signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on the amplitude ratio of auditory-evoked responses to the target speech onset and the noise onset. The result indicated that neural SNR significa

Evaluation of a semi-supervised self-adjustment fine-tuning procedure for hearing aids for asymmetrical hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated a previously evaluated self-adjustment procedure with respect to its applicability for asymmetrical hearing loss (AHL). Self-adjusted settings were evaluated for speech recognition in noise and sound preference. DESIGN: Participants were given the possibility to adjust the left and right hearing aid separately using a two-dimensional user interface. Two different adjustment sequences were tested. Realistic everyday sound scenes in a laboratory environment were presented. The difference between the ears regarding their speech recognition in noise was tested w

A Hearing-Model-Based Active-Learning Test for the Determination of Dead Regions.

This article describes a Bayesian active-learning procedure for estimating the edge frequency, fe, of a dead region, that is, a region in the cochlea with no or very few functioning inner hair cells or neurons. The method is based on the psychophysical tuning curve (PTC) but estimates the shape of the PTC from the parameters of a hearing model, namely fe, and degree of outer hair cell loss. It chooses the masker frequency and level for each trial to be highly informative about the model parameters in the context of previous data. The procedure was tested using 14 ears from eight subjects previ

Adversarial relationship between combined medial olivocochlear (MOC) and middle-ear-muscle (MEM) reflexes and alarm-in-noise detection thresholds under negative signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

The role of auditory efferent feedback from the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) and the middle-ear-muscle (MEM) reflex in tonal detection tasks for humans in the presence of noise is not clearly understood. Past studies have yielded inconsistent results on the relationship between efferent feedback and tonal detection thresholds. This study attempts to address this inconsistency. Fifteen human subjects with normal hearing participated in an experiment where they were asked to identify an alarm signal in the presence of 80 dBA background (pink) noise. Masked detection thresholds were estimat

Otoacoustic emission estimates of human basilar membrane impulse response duration and cochlear filter tuning.

This study describes a method based on temporal suppression of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) to estimate the time course and duration of human basilar membrane impulse responses (BM IRs). This was achieved by tracing the suppression of dominant peaks in the CEOAE spectrum as a function of the temporal separation between two equal-level stimulus clicks. The relationship between the suppression pattern and underlying BM IR duration near the generation site of the CEOAE frequency was established using model simulations. To relate BM IR duration estimates to cochlear filter tuning (Q

Is 20/20 vision good enough? Visual acuity differences within the normal range predict contour element detection and integration.

Contour integration (CI) combines appropriately aligned and oriented elements into continuous boundaries. Collinear facilitation (CF) occurs when a low-contrast oriented element becomes more visible when flanked by collinear high-contrast elements. Both processes rely at least partly on long-range horizontal connections in early visual cortex, and thus both have been extensively studied to understand visual cortical functioning in aging, development, and clinical disorders. Here, we ask: Can acuity differences within the normal range predict CI or CF? To consider this question, we measured bin

A comparison of gain for adults from generic hearing aid prescriptive methods: impacts on predicted loudness, frequency bandwidth, and speech intelligibility.

BACKGROUND: Prescriptive methods have been at the core of modern hearing aid fittings for the past several decades. Every decade or so, there have been revisions to existing methods and/or the emergence of new methods that become widely used. In 2001 Byrne et al provided a comparison of insertion gain for generic prescriptive methods available at that time. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to compare National Acoustic Laboratories-Non-linear 1 (NAL-NL1), National Acoustic Laboratories-Non-linear 2 (NAL-NL2), Desired Sensation Level Multistage Input/Output (DSL m[i/o]), and Cambridge M

Overshoot measured physiologically and psychophysically in the same human ears.

A nonlinear version of the stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emission (SFOAE) was measured using stimulus waveforms similar to those used for behavioral overshoot. Behaviorally, the seven listeners were as much as 11 dB worse at detecting a brief tonal signal (4.0 kHz, 10 ms in duration) when it occurred soon after the onset of a wideband masking noise (0.1-6.0 kHz; 400 ms in duration) than when it was delayed by about 200 ms, and the nonlinear SFOAE measure exhibited a similar effect. When either lowpass (0.1-3.8 kHz) or bandpass noise (3.8-4.2 kHz) was used instead of the wideband noise, the ph

Children with minimal conductive hearing impairment: speech comprehension in noise.

Based on a study sample of 1071 primary school children (5.3-11.7 years), 10.2% of the children were found to have conductive hearing loss in 1 or both ears. Binaural speech comprehension scores of a subset of 540 children were analyzed. The results showed that children with bilateral conductive hearing loss had the lowest mean scores of 60.8-69.3% obtained under noise conditions. These scores were significantly lower than the corresponding scores of 69.3-75.3% obtained by children with possible middle ear disorders but no apparent hearing loss, 70.5-76.5% obtained by children with a unilatera

Context-dependent encoding in the human auditory brainstem relates to hearing speech in noise: implications for developmental dyslexia.

We examined context-dependent encoding of speech in children with and without developmental dyslexia by measuring auditory brainstem responses to a speech syllable presented in a repetitive or variable context. Typically developing children showed enhanced brainstem representation of features related to voice pitch in the repetitive context, relative to the variable context. In contrast, children with developmental dyslexia exhibited impairment in their ability to modify representation in predictable contexts. From a functional perspective, we found that the extent of context-dependent encodin

The Words-in-Noise (WIN) test with multitalker babble and speech-spectrum noise maskers.

The Words-in-Noise (WIN) test uses monosyllabic words in seven signal-to-noise ratios of multitalker babble (MTB) to evaluate the ability of individuals to understand speech in background noise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the criterion validity of the WIN by comparing recognition performances under MTB and speech-spectrum noise (SSN) using listeners with normal hearing and listeners with hearing loss. The MTB and SSN had identical rms and similar spectra but different amplitude-modulation characteristics. The performances by the listeners with normal hearing, which were 2 dB bet

Olivocochlear efferent suppression in classical musicians.

Suppression of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions was recorded from 29 members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and 28 non-musician control subjects matched for age and gender. Binaural broad band noise was used as the suppressor stimulus in a forward masking paradigm. Results showed musicians to have significantly more suppression than non-musicians for both the right and left ears. Two possible explanations for this functional difference between groups are that moderately loud music serves as a sound conditioning stimulus and that music can be a mechanism for strengthening central
