Developing functional hydrogels for treatment of oral diseases.

Oral disease is a severe healthcare challenge that diminishes people's quality of life. Functional hydrogels with suitable biodegradability, biocompatibility, and tunable mechanical properties have attracted remarkable interest and have been developed for treating oral diseases. In this review, we present up-to-date research on hydrogels for the management of dental caries, endodontics, periapical periodontitis, and periodontitis, depending on the progression of dental diseases. The strategies of hydrogels for treating oral mucosal diseases and salivary gland diseases are then classified. Afte

Scanning electron microscopy of bacteria in the apical part of root canals in permanent teeth with periapical lesions.

The most apical 2 mm of the root canals of periapically diseased roots were examined for microorganisms by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bacteria in this area were observed in 10 out of 12 (83.3%) cases. The two remaining cases exhibited bacteria more coronally, with tissue remnants between the bacterial front and the apical foramen. Rod-shaped bacteria dominated, but filaments, spirochetes and cocci were also seen. Cocci and rods sometimes formed micro-colonies. Occasionally, cocci were seen attached to filaments forming "corn-cob"-like structures. Deposits resembling bacterial plaque w

The Intraoral Ultrasonography in Dentistry.

Ultrasonography (USG) is a diagnostic method that the ultrasonic image is created by ultrahigh-frequency sound waves, which have an acoustic frequency above the threshold of human hearing. Compared to other medical imaging methods, USG has several advantages of being real time, portable, inexpensive, radiation free, and noninvasive. In the medicine, most of the USG applications are transcutaneous. However, intraoral USG has been a relatively rare application, it has recently been drawing more interest. Intraoral USG is also used in dentistry for examining the salivary glands and ducts, as well

Root canal treatment of compromised teeth as alternative treatment for patients receiving bisphosphonates: 60-month results of a prospective clinical study.

AIM: This 60-month prospective study aimed to evaluate tooth survival and healing rates after root canal treatment in patients taking bisphosphonates (BPs). Secondary outcomes were complications and clinical variables observed during and after treatment. METHODS: Root canal treatment was performed using manual K-file canal instrumentation and a carrier-based filling technique with an epoxy resin-based sealer. Teeth without adequate root/crown integrity were restored by trained operators at the tissue level (TL group) to prevent occlusal/mechanical stress and to enable periapical lesion healin

Butyrate Stimulates Histone H3 Acetylation, 8-Isoprostane Production, RANKL Expression, and Regulated Osteoprotegerin Expression/Secretion in MG-63 Osteoblastic Cells.

Butyric acid as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor is produced by a number of periodontal and root canal microorganisms (such as Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, etc.). Butyric acid may affect the biological activities of periodontal/periapical cells such as osteoblasts, periodontal ligament cells, etc., and thus affect periodontal/periapical tissue destruction and healing. The purposes of this study were to study the toxic effects of butyrate on the matrix and mineralization marker expression in MG-63 osteoblasts. Cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tet…

Pulp regeneration with hemostatic matrices as a scaffold in an immature tooth minipig model.

Control of blood clotting in root canal systems is one of the most critical and difficult concerns for regenerative endodontics therapy (RET). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using gelatin- and fibrin-based hemostatic hydrogels as a scaffold on pulp regeneration in a minipig model. Cell viability of human dental pulp stem cells cultured three-dimensionally in gelatin-based and fibrin-based scaffolds was evaluated by MTT and live/dead assay. RET was performed on 24 immature premolars with an autologous blood clot (PC), gelatin-based and fibrin-based hemostatic matric

Cemental tear: An overlooked finding associated with rapid periodontal destruction. A case series.

Cemental tear is defined as cementum fragment completely or partially detached from the root surface, and it has been associated with localized rapid periodontal breakdown. Although history of trauma and/or attrition may be risk factors, the etiopathology of cemental tear remains unknown. This case series aims to discuss the clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of cemental tears to aid clinicians in making differential diagnosis. Three teeth from three patients presenting a periradicular lesion underwent an exploratory surgery to determine the cause and provide treatment. Soft a

Management of mucosal fenestrations by interdisciplinary approach: a report of three cases.

INTRODUCTION: Mucosal fenestrations are infrequently encountered in clinical practice, and as such, their management has not been reported often. Their treatment might be further complicated by communication, with the oral environment making them susceptible to the deposition of plaque and calculus, a secondary factor in preventing reformation of mucosal covering. METHODS: Three cases of mucosal fenestrations are presented, of which 2 were nonvital and were treated endodontically. Full-thickness flap was elevated; root-end resection and root-end filling with light-cured glass ionomer were don

Pulpotec® Beyond Pulpotomy: A Case Series of Versatile Applications in Vital Pulp Therapy Procedures in Permanent Teeth.

Vital pulp therapy is a conservative approach aimed at preserving pulp vitality in teeth affected by deep caries or pulp exposure. Pulpotec® has been widely used as a pulpotomy medicament in primary teeth; however, its application in permanent teeth remains limited. This case series illustrates the use of Pulpotec® in five permanent molars that underwent indirect pulp capping, direct pulp capping, and pulpotomy. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed over a follow-up period of up to six months. All treated teeth remained asymptomatic with no tenderness, swelling, or signs of peri

Root Canal Treatment of a Geminated Maxillary Second Molar with C-shaped Canal System: A Case Report.

Gemination is a rare phenomenon in the maxillary posterior teeth. Endodontic treatment of these teeth requires special care due to the bizar … both parts of the tooth. Two months follow-up revealed well-functioning teeth with normal status of periapical tissue with no mobility or abnormality. Successful treatment of unusual anatomical teeth requires adherence to biomechanical principles of canal preparation and coronal restoration.

Cervicofacial Actinomycosis and its Management.

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is an invasive destructive infectious syndrome, caused by Gram-positive, branching filamentous bacteria, Actinomyces. Most of the cases are traced to an odontogenic source with periapical abscess and posttraumatic or surgical complications with poor hygiene and immunosuppression as contributing factors. Diagnosis is often delayed because of nonspecific and prolonged symptoms usually mimicking a malignant or a granulomatous lesion. Solitary or multiple abscesses and fistula formation across normal tissue planes accompany chronic draining lesions and may lead to invas

Type 2 diabetes mellitus impairs tooth supraeruption by disrupting periapical alveolar bone remodeling.

OBJECTIVE: The mechanisms by which type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) impairs tooth supraeruption following tooth loss remain incompletely understood, with evidence suggesting disruption of alveolar bone remodeling. This study aimed to investigate the effects of T2DM on apical alveolar bone remodeling during tooth supraeruption in a mouse model. METHODS: A T2DM mouse model with unopposed mandibular molars was established, including a control group (n = 70) and an experimental T2DM group (n = 70). We systematically analyzed periapical alveolar bone volume, periodontal ligament morphology, suprae

Clinico-pathologic study of odontogenic cysts in a Mexican sample population.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts are uncommon lesions that frequently behave agressively and attain a large size. Unfortunately, information on the relative incidence of these cysts from different populations is not abundant. In Mexico, for example, only a few examples have been reported. The aim of this study was to ascertain the frequency of odontogenic cysts in a Mexican sample and to compare these data with previously reported studies from other countries. METHODS: The files of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Diagnosis Service at the School of Dentistry at the Universidad Nacional Autón

Clinical trials using dental stem cells: 2022 update.

For nearly 20 years, dental stem cells (DSCs) have been successfully isolated from mature/immature teeth and surrounding tissue, including dental pulp of permanent teeth and exfoliated deciduous teeth, periodontal ligaments, dental follicles, and gingival and apical papilla. They have several properties (such as self-renewal, multidirectional differentiation, and immunomodulation) and exhibit enormous potential for clinical applications. To date, many clinical articles and clinical trials using DSCs have reported the treatment of pulpitis, periapical lesions, periodontitis, cleft lip and palat

The three-layer technique for immediate implants on teeth without a buccal bone wall: a case report.

The buccal bone wall is the part of the socket of an anterior tooth that is most susceptible to resorption. Immediate implants offer advantages in terms of time, comfort, and esthetics, especially regarding the maintenance of the papillae architecture. However, the loss of the buccal bone wall is often a limitation for such a therapy. This case report describes a clinical procedure designed to reconstruct the buccal bone wall to restore an anterior tooth where this wall was absent. The approach involved a flapless immediate implant based on the principles of guided bone regeneration (GBR), and
