BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown that using uterotonics to augment or induce labor before arrival at comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEmONC) settings (henceforth, "outside uterotonics") may contribute to perinatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. We estimate its effect on perinatal mortality in rural Bangladesh.
METHODS: Using hospital records (23986 singleton term births, Jan 1, 2009-Dec 31, 2015) from rural Bangladesh, we use a logistic regression model to estimate the increased risk of perinatal death from uterotonics administered outside a CEmONC fac…

BACKGROUND: Ebstein anomaly and tricuspid valve dysplasia are rare congenital tricuspid valve malformations associated with high perinatal mortality. The literature consists of small, single-center case series spanning several decades. We performed a multicenter study to assess the outcomes and factors associated with mortality after fetal diagnosis in the current era.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Fetuses diagnosed with Ebstein anomaly and tricuspid valve dysplasia from 2005 to 2011 were included from 23 centers. The primary outcome was perinatal mortality, defined as fetal demise or death before neo…

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mortality remains a challenge in the care of pregnant women world wide, particularly, in low-resource settings. Each year, 8 million perinatal deaths occur through out the globe; 98% of them in developing countries. Data on the frequency and distribution of adverse birth outcomes and their related risk factors are important for planning maternal and child health care services in developing countries. Such information is scarce from developing settings including Ethiopia.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation and predictive value of past reproductive performances to the…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to identify the major causes of perinatal mortality and to determine the main maternal factors which affect perinatal mortality at the King Fahd Hospital of the University (KFHU), Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted covering a period of ten years from January 1987 to December 1996. All 548 perinatal deaths, which occurred during that period, were analyzed according to Wigglesworth classification.
RESULTS: The study revealed a perinatal mortality rate of 19.2:1,000 births. Lethal malformations accounted for 116 (21.1%) of fe…

In this retrospective eight-years-study we examine factors to be considered responsible for higher perinatal mortality in twins, especially in twins with discordant body weight. As a main risk factor for this we find vaginal delivery, i.e. from a non-vertex position. Other additional reasons for the higher perinatal mortality of twins are prematurity (less than 34 weeks of gestation) and birthweight lower than 1500 grams. Early hospitalisation has a positive influence on that risk. The perinatal mortality in the second twin (6.7%) is twice as high as in the first twin. The highest perinatal mo…

In Ethiopia, the reduction in perinatal mortality rates is still falling short of national and global targets set for 2030. Additionally, accurate recording is challenging, as many births occur at home. This study aimed to assess the trends and determinants of perinatal mortality using population-based longitudinal data from 2009 to 2016 across three Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS) in Ethiopia: Gelgel-Gibe, Dabat, and Kilite-Awlaelo. Data on vital events and pregnancies were continuously collected at these HDSS sites. The study utilized follow-up data from prospective linked…

PURPOSE: To assess the association between maternal potentially life-threatening conditions (PLTC), maternal near miss (MNM), and maternal death (MD) with perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study in 27 Brazilian referral centers from July, 2009 to June, 2010. All women presenting any criteria for PLTC and MNM, or MD, were included. Sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics were evaluated in each group of maternal outcomes. Childbirth and maternal morbidity data were related to perinatal adverse outcomes (5th min Apgar score < 7, fetal death, neonatal death, or any of these). Th

Objective: In the last few decades, attention has been focused on morbidity and mortality associated with late preterm delivery (34-36 + 6/7 weeks), accounting for 60-70% of all preterm births. This study is aimed to determine (1) the prevalence of late preterm deliveries (spontaneous and medically indicated) in our population; and (2) the rate of neonatal morbidity and mortality as well as maternal complications associated with the different phenotypes of late preterm deliveries. Study design: This retrospective population-based cohort study, included 96,176 women who had 257,182 deliveries,

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between advanced paternal age and offspring health is unclear, owing to familial confounders. This study examined the association of paternal age with offspring's under-five mortality and perinatal outcomes, using sibling comparison analyses to account for familial confounding factors.
METHODS: A nationwide birth cohort study was designed based on Taiwan's single-payer compulsory National Health Insurance programme. Individuals born between 2001 and 2015 were included, resulting in 2454 104 live-born singletons. Among them, 1513 222 individuals had full sib

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Ghana's free maternal health care policy on stillbirth and perinatal death since its implementation a decade ago.
STUDY DESIGN: The study used the propensity score matching method, a quasi-experimental design technique and secondary data to construct two groups of mothers with a history of perinatal deaths who subscribed to the 'free' maternal health care policy versus mothers who did not.
METHOD: The study merged two rounds of repeated cross-sectional data sets obtained from the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS), 2008 and 2014,
