To test the hypothesis that the crescendo-decrescendo type of pattern of periodic breathing is more common in infants than in adulthood, we examined the morphologies of periodic breathing in four groups of subjects: group 1 (n=10, gestational age 30+/-1 week), group 2 (n=10, GA 31+/-1 week), group 3 (n=10, GA 38+/-1 week), and group 4 (n=10, age 50+/-4 years). Hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis(HYPP) is characterized by intermittent episodes of muscular tremor, weakness, and collapse, and is probably caused by abnormal electrolyte transport in the muscle cell membrane. The aim of this prospective study is to asses, the possibility to use Remestyp after the delivery of the head as a prophylaxis of blood lost during the third stage of labor. The material includes 209 cases: 82 with bolus dose of 0.2 mg Methergin, 54 cases with 10 ME Oxytocin, 32 parturition with 200 mg Remestyp, and 41 controls without any uterostonics during the placental period. Opioids are the most commonly used medication for patients with acute pain. Morphine is the prototype with which all other opioids are compared. Synthetic and semisynthetic derivatives of morphine have unique properties, allowing for the use of a larger selection of medication. An understanding of the mechanisms of action, adverse effects, and routes of administration of the various potent opioids is important for good postoperative pain management.

This study was a retrospective review of 252 brain-dead potential donors from 1990 to 1996, including 5 organ donors in the peripartum period. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of pregnancy on organ donor management and recipient outcome. Case analysis of 5 pregnant donors identified problems with hemodynamic stability and electrolyte abnormalities, including hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, and hypocalcemia. Massive myocardial calcification (MMC) in the perinatal period is an unusual finding considered to be a unique tissue reaction. This report summarizes the clinical and pathologic findings of seven cases of perinatal MMC. All patients presented clinical evidence of myocardial damage. A 22-year-old black woman presented with symptoms suggestive of Cushing's syndrome three years after chemotherapy for a presumed teratoma with cervical lymphadenopathy. Initially, the absence of clinical signs and the demonstration of two normal 24 h urinary free cortisols appeared to exclude the diagnosis, but an ectopic adrenocorticotropin-producing thymic carcinoid was subsequently removed surgically. Cushing's syndrome due to ectopic adrenocorticotropin production can be difficult to diagnose, particularly if there is periodic hormonogenesis.
