Tibial and peroneal nerve conduction studies in ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb injuries and ankle sprain occur frequently among football players, due to the high incidence of physical contact. As a result, lower limb nerves are subject to injury. This project aims to evaluate the lower limb nerve conduction among students playing football to investigate the probable relationship between ankle sprain in football and nerve conductivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty volunteer students aged between 19 and 25 were studied. They fell into three groups; one comprising of 20 healthy football players whose football experience exceeded three years, the seco

Peroneal nerve motor conduction to the extensor digitorum brevis.

Peroneal motor studies to the extensor digitorum brevis are commonly performed in electrodiagnosis. They have been investigated by many authors to derive the normal ranges for latency, amplitude, and nerve conduction velocity. Many of these studies, particularly the older ones, have methodological limitations, especially in light of modern technique and statistical applications. They often used small sample sizes. The objective of this study was to generate an expanded database of normative values for the peroneal nerve. In this study, 242 asymptomatic subjects without risk factors for neuropa

[Polyneuropathy index-revised in the evaluation of diabetic neuropathy].

The polyneuropathy index-revised(PNI-R), based on 8 electrophysiological parameters(conduction velocities and F-latencies), was constructed to obtain an overall estimation of peripheral nerve conduction in diabetic patients, taking PNI as a model. PNI was calculated as a mean percentage of the normal on 12 velocity or latency parameters on motor nerve conduction studies. PNI-R is composed of 8 parameters; motor nerve conduction velocities in the forearm or leg segment and F-wave latencies after wrist or ankle stimulation concerning to the median, ulnar, peroneal and posterior tibial nerves. F-

[Pain caused by ephaptic transmission occurring in the recovery phase of diabetic vascular mononeuropathy was effectively suppressed with L-threo-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-serine].

A 59-year-old man with an 8-years history of diabetes mellitus had an acute onset of sharp pain in the anterior part of right lower leg. One month later, the pain changed to deep dull nature in the deeper site of the peroneal region. The pain increased, when he stood up, walked, and stayed in the cold room and decreased by rest. It was more painful in the evening than in the morning. The first sharp pain was thought to be caused by ischemia due to diabetic vascular neuropathy. The next dull pain was considered to be originated from ephaptic transmission between sympathetic efferent fibers to g

Fibular Nerve Repair by Lateral Sural Cutaneous Nerve Graft: Anatomic Feasibility Study and Clinical Results.

OBJECTIVE: The common fibular nerve (CFN) is the most frequently injured nerve in the lower limbs. Surgical management is necessary in approximately two thirds of patients and includes neurolysis, suture, graft repair, or nerve transfer. The distal sural nerve is the preferred donor for grafting, but it is not without complications and requires a second incision. We sought to study the surgical anatomy of the lateral sural cutaneous nerve (LSCN) with the aim of repairing CFN injuries through the same incision and as a potential source for grafting in other nerve injuries. METHODS: The poplite

Common peroneal nerve palsy following total hip arthroplasty: prognostic factors for recovery.

BACKGROUND: Common peroneal nerve palsy, although rare, is a serious complication of total hip arthroplasty. Although several publications have dealt with the risk factors for peroneal nerve palsy, there is little literature regarding the time it takes for the nerve to recover and the factors that influence its recovery. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the clinical course of this injury and identify prognostic factors for recovery. METHODS: From January 2000 to December 2007, 7969 primary and 1601 revision total hip arthroplasties were performed at our institution. Common peroneal

An unusual cause of paralysis of the peroneal nerve: a report of 3 cases.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

We present 3 cases of a 12-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy with progressive paresis of the peroneal nerve. Peroneal intraneural ganglia are a rare cause of paralysis of the lower limb in children; more often these symptoms occur because of exostosis. Ultrasound imaging in both patients showed a cystic mass near the fibular neck. Magnetic resonance imaging examination revealed that the ganglion is communicating with the proximal tibiofibular joint. Surgical exploration in these patients confirmed a cystic formation involving the common peroneal nerve. The ganglion origina

Peripheral neuropathy as initial manifestation of primary systemic vasculitides.

Peripheral neuropathies are well-known complications of primary systemic vasculitides. In rare cases, peripheral neuropathies are among the first symptoms of these diseases. In this prospective study, 89 consecutive adult patients with newly diagnosed primary systemic vasculitis were screened, of whom 22 patients (25 %, 12 men, ten women, mean age, 59 years, range, 26-82 years) suffered from peripheral neuropathy due to systemic vasculitis at initial presentation. Peripheral neuropathy was most frequent in newly diagnosed patients with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strau

Undiagnosed Peripheral Nerve Disease in Patients with Failed Lumbar Disc Surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study (level of evidence=3). PURPOSE: We examine the relationship between residual symptoms after discectomy for lumbar disc herniation and peripheral nerve (PN) neuropathy. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Patients may report persistent or recurrent symptoms after lumbar disc herniation surgery; others fail to respond to a variety of treatments. Some PN neuropathies elicit symptoms similar to those of lumbar spine disease. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data for 13 patients treated for persistent (n=2) or recurrent (n=11) low back pain (LBP) and/or leg pain after p

[Treatment of foot drop in orthopaedic practice].

Foot drop is a symptom of many diseases and leads to an unaesthetic limping gait, falls and injuries. The most common cause of foot drop is injury to the common peroneal nerve, which innervates ankle joint and foot extensors. Other causes of foot drop include: sciatic nerve injury, lumbar plexopathies, L4/L5 radiculopathy, central nervous system related neuropathies (anterior horn cell disease, brain tumor). Also compartment syndromes of the lower leg can lead to foot drop deformity. Ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) are helpful in the treatment of paralyzed extensor muscles of the foot. The surgical

[Disseminated herpes zoster complicated by lumbosacral polyradiculoneuritis and fibular neuropathy: A case report].

A 74-year-old woman who presented with a skin eruption involving the left lateral leg along the L5 dermatome and widespread eruptions on the buttocks and trunk was diagnosed with disseminated herpes zoster (HZ). She also had left lower extremity muscle weakness. The pattern of distribution of muscle weakness and gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging findings indicated polyradiculoneuritis mainly affecting the L5 spinal root. Moreover, we observed severe weakness of the left tibialis anterior muscle. Weakness of the other L5 myotomes reduced after antiviral treatment; however, left tib

Efficacy of functional electrical stimulation in rehabilitating patients with foot drop symptoms after stroke and its correlation with somatosensory evoked potentials-a crossover randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The connectivity between somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and cortical plasticity remains elusive due to a lack of supporting data. This study investigates changes in pathological latencies and amplitudes of SEPs caused by an acute stroke after 2 weeks of rehabilitation with functional electrical stimulation (FES). Furthermore, changes in SEPs and the efficacy of FES against foot drop (FD) stroke symptoms were correlated using the 10-m walk test and foot-ankle strength. METHODS: A randomised controlled two-period crossover design plus a control group (group C) was designed. G

Great toe drop following knee ligament reconstruction: A case report.

Case Description: A 17-year-old male post anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction complained of the inability to extend his great toe immediately following surgery. Background: Neurological injuries following knee arthroscopy have been reported to occur between 0.6%-2.5%. The most commonly injured nerves are the saphenous and common fibular nerve (CFN). Great toe-drop secondary to isolated denervation of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL), has only been reported one time in the literature. This report describes a case of isolated denervation of the EHL following knee cruciate ligament recons

Ganglion Cyst at the Proximal Tibiofibular Joint in a Patient with Painless Foot Drop.

Entrapment neuropathies of the fibular nerve and its branches are often underdiagnosed due to the lack of reliable diagnosis using clinical examination and electrophysiologic evaluation. Most fibular nerve compressions may be classified into 2 broad categories: (a) mechanical causes, which occur at fibrous or fibro-osseous tunnels, and (b) dynamic causes related to nerve injury during specific limb positioning. Foot drop resulting from weakness of the dorsiflexor muscles of the foot is a relatively uncommon presentation and closely related to L5 neuropathy caused by a disc herniation. However,
