Impulsivity, aggressiveness, and DSM-IV personality disorders.

The aim of this study is to assess whether impulsive and aggressive traits can be placed on a continuum with DSM-IV Cluster B Personality Disorders (PDs) and to determine if different aspects of these personality traits are specifically associated with individual Cluster B PDs. The study group comprised 461 outpatients admitted consecutively to a clinic that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of PDs. Principal component analyses clearly suggested a five-factor structure of both normal and psychopathological personality traits. Importantly, measures of impulsivity, aggressiveness and no…

Social-emotion recognition in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal disturbances, but the neurocognitive aspects of these symptoms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with BPD have impaired perception of emotional expressions, which are related to symptoms of interpersonal dysfunction. To control potential confounding factors, this study excluded subjects with comorbid diagnoses known to be associated with impaired affect perception. We tested 43 outpatients with BPD and 26 healthy controls on emotion recognition tasks (facial, prosodic, and integrated facial/prosodic), no…

Borderline personality and substance use in women.

The association between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and substance use disorder (SUD) was examined in a predominantly psychiatric (77.6%) sample of 232 women. BPD proved to be a significant predictor of a lifetime diagnosis of SUD across four different categories: any SUD (including alcohol); alcohol use; drug use; and heroin, cocaine, or poly-substance use. BPD continued to be a predictor of SUD even when the effects of other cluster B and all cluster C PDs were controlled statistically. Antisocial personality disorder generally yielded larger odds ratios than BPD and emerged as a pa…

[Eating psychopathology and personality in eating disorders].

OBJECTIVE: The question of how many psychopathologic factors are involved in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) has no definite answer. The combination of psychopathology and personality research may shed a light upon the determinants of eating pathology. METHODS: The study consists in the administration of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Eating Disorder Inventory 2 (EDI-2) to 95 outpatient anorectic women (50 restrictive and 45 binge-purging) and to 92 bulimic outpatient women (78 with and 14 without purging behaviours). The respective scores of each DCA sub…

Diagnosis of personality disorders in learning disability.

BACKGROUND: Though contentious, the diagnosis of personality disorders in persons with learning disability is clinically relevant because it affects many aspects of management. AIMS: To examine published literature on the diagnosis of personality disorders in learning disability. METHOD: Selective review with computerised (Medline, Embase and PsychInfo) and manual literature searches. RESULTS: The variation in the co-occurrence of personality disorder in learning disability, with prevalence ranging from less than 1% to 91% in a community setting and 22% to 92% in hospital settings, is very …

Personality profiles in patients with eating disorders.

The present review focused on the personality profiles of patients with eating disorders. Studies using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorder showed high rates of diagnostic co-occurrence between eating disorders and personality disorders. The most commonly observed were histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, avoidant, dependent and borderline personality disorders. Studies using the Cloninger's personality theory suggested that high Harm Avoidance might be relevant to the pathology of anorexia nervosa and high Novelty Seeking and Harm Avoidance to bulimia nervosa. Mo…

Violent women, blame attribution, crime, and personality.

BACKGROUND: The attribution of blame for criminal act has an impact, both on the way the offender must come to terms with the offence and on the risk of recidivism. Blame attribution has been found to be related to the type of crime and personality. AIMS: This study examined the relationship of blame attribution and feelings of guilt in violent female offenders, according to factors related to crime, background and personality. METHODS: The Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory (BAI) and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) were administered to 58 violent female offenders. The Hare Psychop…

Personality traits in childhood and adolescent headache.

We evaluate personality traits, anxiety and depression in a population of paediatric and adolescent patients, correlating personality characteristics with headache and sociodemographic variables. The clinical features of headache include specific personality traits. We report a clinical study of 57 patients (age 8-18 years), divided up as follows: 12 migraine with aura, 29 migraine without aura and 16 tension-type headache. One of Cattel's tests was administered to every patient; the Children's Depression Inventory test was administered to 53 patients and the Test Anxiety Inventory test to 43 …

[Studies of the personality of nursing students].

This study evaluates diverse psychological variables in 35 third-year nursing students. Personality is studied according to Eysenck's theories, by means of the E.P.Q. questionnaire; assertive behavior is studied by means of the Gambrill and Richey assertiveness questionnaire; and the hostility set is also measured by means of the Buss-Durkee questionnaire. Likewise, due to the results obtained, the authors point out the necessity to work on the theme of assertiveness in nursing students.

Relationship between depression and borderline personality disorder.

The frequent occurrence of depressive symptoms in patients with borderline personality disorder has generated considerable interest in the nature of the relationship between borderline personality disorder and the depressive disorders. Data from the perspectives of phenomenology, biology, family history, course of illness, comorbidity patterns, and treatment response have been brought to bear on the question. Reviews based on research available by 1985 and 1991, respectively, arrived at differing conclusions: (1) that both disorders shared common but non-specific sources, and (2) that the two …

Personality, smoking and suicide: a prospective study.

From a random sample of Swiss army conscripts, 28 cases of suicide, 36 deaths due to accident and 2754 controls were analyzed for social and psychological features, in particular for personality factors at age 19 years; further information was collected during a follow-up study to age 36 years. Among the subjects who committed suicide low school achievement, smoking, and psychiatric disorders were overrepresented. In both groups of deaths aggressiveness (excitability, reactive aggression, spontaneous aggression) and depression scores were higher than among controls. The findings are compatible…

["Multiple personality disorder" in childhood and adolescence].

UNLABELLED: Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) (ICD 10, DSM-III-R) or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DSM IV) is seen as a dissociative disorder. The diagnosis is mainly made only in adults. Descriptions of MPD in children or adolescents are rare in scientific literature. Both sexual and physical abuse are seen as the most important etiological factors. The diagnostic criteria include the presence of two or more identities within one person, the alternating control of the person's actions by the different personalities and amnesia with regard to episodes in one's life history which cannot be …

The hysterical personality disorder: a phenomenological approach.

The background of the present study is a general uncertainty as to what comprises the essence of hysterical (histrionic) personality disorder. Using phenomenological methodology, phenomena observable in the 'classic' hysterical personality are analysed, described, named, and classified according to the basic functions of human experience and behaviour. The resulting psychopathological picture of the hysterical personality facilitates a differential diagnosis that is often decidedly difficult. The phenomenon of dissociation of the mental processes is demonstrated for the various basic functions…

A spectrum for obsession and personality disorders.

Obsession was introduced by Kraepelin in 1915 and has been studied extensively since. When a person with obsession becomes physically exhausted with chronic rumination accompanied by suspicion, he or she is driven to impulsive acts, and develops a personality disorder that displays persistent abnormal activities. Obsession is related closely to depression and schizophrenia. Obsession is induced when uncertainty and instability dominates intelligence and creativity. The current social hierarchy of a strongly controlled society rejects diversity of humanity and often triggers personality disorde…

Personality development of adolescents with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is a disorder of puberty characterized by absence of spontaneous sexual maturation. 8 male adolescents with this disorder, who were treated with pulsatile GnRH administration, were examined psychologically by means of standardized interviews. Problems were found in the development of independence (specifically relating to own body image and social functioning) and in identity development (particularly on personal characteristics).
