Clinical Implications of ICD-11 for Diagnosing and Treating Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11) introduced a new approach to personality disorders and related traits. This paper reviews recent literature on the assessment of ICD-11 personality disorders and implications for clinical diagnosis, decision-making, and treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: We reviewed findings on two measures developed for the ICD-11 model of personality dysfunction and six inventories for the ICD-11 trait specifiers. The psychometric qualities of these tools are promising, and they allow for both rapid screening and fine-grained as

A Hierarchical Integration of Normal and Abnormal Personality Dimensions: Structure and Predictive Validity in a Heterogeneous Sample of Psychiatric Outpatients.

Hierarchical, quantitative models of psychopathology focus primarily on higher-order constructs, whereas less is known about the structure and content comprising lower-order dimensions of psychopathology. Here, we address this gap in the literature by using targeted factor analysis to integrate the 25 maladaptive facet-level traits of the Personality Inventory for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-Fifth edition and the 10 aspect-level traits of the normal personality hierarchy within a sample of 198 psychiatric outpatients. A 10-factor solution replicated previous work, with

Affective instability as rapid cycling: theoretical and clinical implications for borderline personality and bipolar spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders guidelines provide only a partial solution to the nosology and treatment of bipolar disorder in that disorders with common symptoms and biological correlates may be categorized separately because of superficial differences related to behavior, life history, and temperament. The relationship is explored between extremely rapid switching forms of bipolar disorder, in which manic and depressive symptoms are either mixed or switch rapidly, and forms of borderline personality disorder in which affective lability is a prominent sy

Study of psychosocial factors affecting premature ejaculation from the perspective of personality traits: a large sample cross-sectional study from Anhui, China.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are the intrinsic factors of mental health, and may play a role in the pathogenesis of premature ejaculation (PE), but few studies have evaluated the association between personality traits and the 4 types of PE. AIM: We aim to investigate the personality traits associated with PE in 4 types of PE and their associations with PE. METHODS: Between February 2024 and February 2025, we conducted a survey in Anhui, China, and enrolled 1708 males. Personality traits were independently assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The index of PE was used to evalu

The Burden of the Perfect Frame: A Scoping Review on Personality and Muscle Dysmorphia.

Research on muscle dysmorphia (MD), currently conceptualized as a clinical specifier for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), is rapidly expanding. Although personality traits and disorders have been proposed as relevant risk factors for the development of BDD, their role in MD remains insufficiently understood. This scoping review aims to synthesize the existing empirical literature on the associations between MD and personality, while identifying key research gaps and clinical challenges. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across PsycArticles, PubMed, Scopus, W

DRD3 variation associates with early-onset heroin dependence, but not specific personality traits.

Dopamine D3 receptor-mediated pathways are involved in the mechanism of addiction, and genetic factors play a role in the vulnerability to heroin dependence. The aim of this study was to examine whether the corresponding gene, DRD3, is associated with the development of heroin dependence and specific personality traits in HD patients. Eight polymorphisms in DRD3 were analyzed in 1067 unrelated Han Chinese subjects (566 heroin dependence patients and 501 controls). All participants were screened using the same assessment tool and all patients met the criteria for heroin dependence. A Tridimensi

The longitudinal relationships of interpersonal openness trait, hostility, and hostile attribution bias.

While the relationship between personality, hostility, and hostile attribution bias (HAB) has been explored in previous studies, their longitudinal relationship is unclear, and no related study has utilized the indigenous Chinese personality. This research explored the longitudinal relationships of interpersonal openness (IO; an indigenous Chinese personality construct), hostility, and HAB. The 942 valid participants (38.5% male, mean age = 20.83, standard deviation =  1.04) were from six different provinces in China. Measurements were completed on two separate occasions (Times 1 and 2), with

Externalizing and internalizing subtypes of combat-related PTSD: a replication and extension using the PSY-5 scales.

This study replicated and extended prior findings of internalizing and externalizing subtypes of posttraumatic response (M. W. Miller, J. L. Greif, & A. A. Smith, 2003). Cluster analyses of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory--2 Personality Psychopathology--Five (MMPI-2 PSY-5; A. R. Harkness, J. L. McNulty, Y. S. Ben-Porath, 1995) profiles obtained from 736 veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) partitioned the sample into a low pathology cluster defined by personality scores in the normal range, an externalizing cluster characterized by low constraint and high negative

Do cerebral motivational asymmetries mediate the relationship between handedness and personality?

Handedness has long been tied to personality, but detailed explanations for the association are lacking. Importantly for purposes of theory development, measures of approach and withdrawal associated with Big Five personality traits have also been traced back to activity in brain areas that relate to handedness. Specifically, increased right-hemisphere frontal activity appears to be linked to both withdrawal motivation and left/inconsistent-handedness, while increased left-hemisphere frontal activity is associated with approach motivation and right/consistent-handedness. Cerebral motivational

A longitudinal examination of different etiological pathways to alcohol use and misuse.

BACKGROUND: Sher, Grekin, and Williams (2005) pointed out the existence of 4 main etiological, but not mutually exclusive, models that might explain the development of alcohol use and misuse. The aim of the present study was to explore 3 of these 4 pathways in which psychological (personality and drinking motives) and environmental (child maltreatment) variables may play a relevant role: positive affect regulation, negative affect regulation, and deviance proneness. METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen young adults in the 18 to 29 year age range completed different personality, alcohol use, an

Sex differences in psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. A review and integration.

Although the correlates and causes of psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) have been the subject of extensive investigation, researchers in this area have until recently focused almost exclusively on males. As a consequence, relatively little is known about psychopathy and ASPD in females. In this paper, we review the empirical literature on sex differences in the base rates, mean symptom levels, correlates, and factor structure of psychopathy and ASPD. In addition, we discuss the potential sex-differentiated phenotypic expressions of psychopathy and ASPD (e.g., somatization

Exploring the links between childhood emotional abuse and empathy: The mediating roles of alexithymia and sensory processing sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to childhood emotional abuse amplifies the personality traits of alexithymia and sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) a … : The findings provide important insights into how childhood exposure to emotional abuse can impact personality development and, indirectly, the development of empathy. They also highlight the importance of considering the relative strength of specific traits associated with both alexithymia and SPS when trying to predict individual differences in empathy. Probabilistic graphical model for the evaluation of the emotional and dramatic personality disorders.

Personality disorders are psychological ailments with a major negative impact on patients, their families, and society in general, especially those of the dramatic and emotional type. Despite all the research, there is still no consensus on the best way to assess and treat them. Traditional assessment of personality disorders has focused on a limited number of psychological constructs or behaviors using structured interviews and questionnaires, without an integrated and holistic approach. We present a novel methodology for the study and assessment of personality disorders consisting in the dev

Transmissibility and familiality of NEO personality dimensions in a sample of Korean families with schizophrenia.

Categorical syndromes such as schizophrenia may represent complexes of many continuous psychological structural phenotypes along several dimensions of personality development/degeneration. The present study investigated the heritability and familiality of Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness to experience (NEO) personality dimensions in Korean families with schizophrenic linkage disequilibrium (LD).We have recruited 204 probands (with schizophrenia) with their parents and siblings whenever possible. We have used NEO questionnaires for measuring personality and symptomatic dimensions. Heritabiliti…

Assessment of personality functioning in ICD-11 posttraumatic stress disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder.

The newly added diagnosis complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) includes a domain of disturbances in self-organization (DSO), in addition to PTSD. The DSO construct appears to have definitional overlap with the dimensional personality pathology severity measure, personality functioning. This study investigated the association between personality functioning and ICD-11 CPTSD, and the associations between DSO clusters and personality functioning domains. The sample comprised 83 outpatients with ICD-11 PTSD or CP
