Can you handle failure?

Handling failure and blame is key to managerial success. But roughly 70 % of Americans have a personality type that tends to react inappropriately when things go wrong. Some people are extrapunitive, always pointing a finger at someone else. Others are impunitive, denying there's a problem or that they played any role. And still others are intrapunitive, heaping too much blame on themselves and seeing disasters where none exist. Fortunately, there are ways to fix such flawed responses. The first step is to cultivate self-awareness; several personality tests can help you assess your interaction…

Personality and the risk of cancer.

BACKGROUND: The role of personality in the causation of cancer has been controversial. We examined this question in a large, prospective study. METHODS: From June through August 1990, 30 277 residents of Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan completed a Japanese version of the short form of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised and a questionnaire on various health habits. There were 671 prevalent cases of cancer at baseline, and 986 incident cases of cancer were identified during 7 years of follow-up, through December 1997. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate the re

[Psychological findings in a group of patients with perioral dermatitis].

Female patients suffering from perioral dermatitis were given the Raven Test, two personality inventories (MMPI and FPI) and the Rorschach Test. The results of these four tests show statistically significant differences from controls, indicating emotional immaturity combined with high intelligence level, inability to achieve satisfactory interpersonal relationships contrasting with an overemphasis upon social conformity, and a tendency to 'hysteriform' reactions.

Psychological characteristics of breast cancer patients.

Two breast cancer groups (mastectomised or chemotherapeutic intervention) and a control group of healthy female nurses were given a demographic questionnaire and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The personality profiles of all three groups emerged as significantly different from each other on all scales with the exception of social introversion and psychopathic deviance. Both cancer groups displayed inflated scores on the clinical scale Depression. A separate series of univariate F tests revealed that the mastectomised patients were characterised by elevated scores on the clini

How will I be when I will grow up? The importance of psychological intervention in pediatric patients to prevent symptoms from becoming chronical.

Psychological discomforts in pediatric patients, if not identified, and considered as personality traits can lead to abnormalities in the development. Identifying psychological problems and treating them with psychological intervention could avoid the raise of psychological disease in adulthood. The aim of this study is to evaluate the perception of self-image and interpersonal relationships of children affected by juvenile idiopathic arthritis (chronic pathology); to compare those data with those published in a previous research about enuretic children (functional pathology) and children affe

Prevalence and moderators of personality disorders in adults with ADHD: A meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis investigated the prevalence and moderators of personality disorders (PDs) in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), synthesizing data from 11 studies encompassing 2120 participants across clinical and nonclinical settings. The results indicate a substantial but highly variable burden of personality pathology, with a pooled prevalence for the presence of at least one comorbid PD estimated at 57 % (95 % CI [42-71]). However, this figure was largely driven by specialized outpatient populations, and statistical heterogeneity was exceptionally high (I² > 90

Two-year retest reliability and predictive validity of the Self- and Informant-Personality Inventory for ICD-11 in older adults.

The International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition (ICD-11) adopted a fully dimensional model of personality disorder. The Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD) and Informant-Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (IPiC) were developed to assess the ICD-11 trait model, and the PiCD has since received significant validation support. However, there has only been one prior study of longitudinal predictive validity of the PiCD, two relatively short test-retest reliability studies of the PiCD, and no prior longitudinal tests of the IPiC. Longitudinal psychometric support for psychological asses

Associations between Gilbert's syndrome and personality characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Gilbert's syndrome (GS) is a benign genetic disorder that is characterized by intermittent mild jaundice in which the liver doesn't process bilirubin properly. The aim of this study was to determine whether GS patients have a different personality structure and if there are associations between properties of temperament and character and total bilirubin levels. METHODS: A total of 1665 young male individuals aged from 19 to 30 who were admitted for occupational examinations were included in this study. Careful patient history was taken, a detailed physical examination was conducted

A taxometric analysis of psychopathy in a Chinese prison sample.

As psychopathy is one of the major personality disorders-relating to severe pathological syndromes of personality-clarity concerning the nature of the latent structure of psychopathy is necessary for accurate assessment. In the present study, psychopathy was assessed in 339 Chinese male prisoners aged 18 to 35 years with three subscales of the Youth Psychopathy Trait Inventory - Short Version (YPI-SV). Three different taxometric analyses were used to assess the taxonicity of psychopathy, and a three-factor solution to the YPI-SV was used as the basis of the analysis. Consistency tests of the t

Personality and risk of physical illness.

Several personality characteristics have been linked in multiple well-designed prospective studies to subsequent physical health outcomes, such as longevity and the development and course of cardiovascular disease. The evidence is strongest for negative affectivity/neuroticism, anger/hostility and related traits, and optimism. Models of mechanisms underlying these associations have emphasized physiological effects of stress, exposure to stressors, and health behavior. Preliminary evidence supports the viability of some mechanisms, but formal mediational tests are lacking. In addition to addres

When to discharge and when to voluntary or compulsory hospitalize? Factors associated with treatment decision after self-harm.

Clinicians assessing suicidal patients in emergency departments (EDs) must decide whether to admit the person to a psychiatric ward with voluntary or compulsory hospitalization or to discharge him/her as an outpatient. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify independent predictors of this decision among a large sample of self-harm (SH) patients. It used data from all patients admitted to four Swiss EDs between 2016 and 2019. Socio-demographic, clinical, and suicidal process-related characteristics data were evaluated against the decision for voluntary or compulsory hospitalization using t

Diversities of behavioral traits and neuropsychological function in different substance addiction.

OBJECTIVE: There are various temperaments and personality characters that modulate the development of substance addiction. The pharmacological properties of substances would alter the homeostasis of brain function and influence the neuropsychological performance through different neurotransmissions which then facilitate diverse emotional and behavioral responses. Our goal is to assess the interaction between personality characteristics, neuropsychological performances and Stroop interference in alcoholics, heroin and amphetamine dependent persons. METHODS: Subjects with alcohol (N=95), heroin

[Polymorphic markers of the dopamine D4 receptor gene promoter region and personality traits in mentally healthy individuals from the Russian population].

The dopamine receptor gene D4 is a highly polymorphic gene, which, according to a number of studies, is associated with the personality traits characterizing human activity. Earlier, a VNTR polymorphic marker in exon 3 and single-nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region were shown to be associated with novelty seeking. However, these results were not supported by all subsequent studies, which suggest a possible effect of other polymorphic regions of this gene. The aim of the present work was studying the effect of gene DRD4 on activity-related human personality traits in Russians, using
