Explaining the Family-Centred Care of Young People With Depressive Disorders and Suicidal Ideations: A Grounded Theory Study.

AIM: This study aimed to develop a theory to guide family members caring for young people with depressive disorders and suicidal ideations. DESIGN: Strauss and Corbin's Grounded Theory. METHODS: Theoretical sampling was used to recruit primary family caregivers (aged 22-60) of young people experiencing depressive disorders and suicidal ideations from hospitals and psychiatric clinics in Taiwan. Data were collected using interviews (n = 23) in 2023. Data were analysed using Corbin & Strauss' analytical framework, including open, axial and selective coding until theoretical saturation was reac

Treating the mentally disordered criminal offender in a hospital setting.

The author outlines the legislation and treatment system for mentally disordered criminal offenders in Japan, and reviews the recent studies on the treatment of refractory patients in mental hospitals. Involuntary admission of patients referred by a public prosecutor or by a head of a correctional institution is problematic regarding the judgment criteria for admission and discharge, and imposes a burden on practitioners. The author outlines the main problems of the treatment of criminal offenders in a hospital setting: reaction to the hospital environment, lack of motivation for treatment, th

Psychiatric disorders and crime: a study of pretrial psychiatric examinations.

A study of 50 consecutive individuals referred for pretrial psychiatric examination, presumably because of previous psychiatric hospitalization (82 percent), indicated that antisocial personality, alcoholism, or drug dependence was present in 80 percent. Schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder was seen in about a third of the subjects, usually associated as well, however, with antisocial personality, alcoholism, or drug dependence. There were no significant differences in index crime between those with or without schizophenia bipolar affective disorder. It is concluded that the latter cond

A scoping review of programmes that address the daily living functioning of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: People diagnosed with borderline personality disorder experience persistent functional impairment despite current evidence-based treatment. Domains of daily living functioning, such as establishing a routine, household management and self-care, can be important goals for rehabilitation. This review aimed to scope and synthesise programmes that address the daily living functioning of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. METHODS: This review followed the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodological g

Using a trauma-informed care framework to explore social climate and borderline personality disorder in forensic inpatient settings.

Tensions between therapeutic and security needs on forensic wards can create a social climate which is challenging for both mental health nurses and patients. Social climate refers to the physical, social and emotional conditions of a forensic ward which influence how these environments are experienced. For patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), previous trauma means that the social climate of forensic settings may be experienced as retraumatising, negatively impacting the outcomes and wellbeing of both patients and mental health nurses. Trauma-informed care (TIC) has been offere

Tertiary Syphilis (General Paralysis of the Insane) and Bipolar Disorder; the role of these two disorders in the life of famous composers.

Syphilis is a complex disease, which can lead to General Paralysis of the Insane if left untreated. Before antibiotics this was the natural progression of the disease, with many people being admitted to mental asylums with the diagnosis of GPI, and going on to die there. Diagnoses however, were difficult, as it was difficult to distinguish between GPI and other mental conditions such as bipolar disorder. We can use the works of the classical composers Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Smetana, who all suffered from mental illness, to gain an insight into what it is like to live with these cond

Gender differences in psychiatric comorbidity and personality characteristics among adults seeking treatment for problematic internet use.

In the present study, we investigated gender differences in personality and psychiatric correlates among adults (N = 115) seeking treatment for problematic internet use (PIU) at a specialized clinic in São Paulo, Brazil. All participants were assessed at the beginning of their treatment for co-occurring psychiatric conditions, other addictive behaviors, and personality characteristics. Women (n = 20) were more likely to present with greater rates of psychiatric comorbidity compared to men (n = 95), including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stres

The occurrence of comorbidities with affective and anxiety disorders among older people with intellectual disability compared with the general population: a register study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the burden of comorbidities among older people with intellectual disability (ID) who have affective and anxiety disorders. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the occurrence and risk of psychiatric and somatic comorbidities with affective and/or anxiety disorders in older people with ID compared to the general population. METHODS: This population study was based on three Swedish national registers over 11 years (2002-2012). The ID group was identified in the LSS register, which comprises of data on measures in accordance with the Act Concerning Support and

Comorbidity, neurobiology, and pharmacotherapy of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder is a common psychiatric illness that imposes persistent functional impairment and disability on persons who have the disorder. The disorder is characterized by a marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment may occur. It is the most prevalent of any anxiety disorder and is the third most common psychiatric disorder after depression and alcohol abuse. Social anxiety disorder typically begins during childhood with a mean age at onset between 14 and 16 years and is sometimes preceded by a history of social inhibition or shyness. Per

Distressing memories: A continuum from wellness to PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traumatic events is a frequent source of distress, provoking isolated symptoms such as distressing memories (DM) to full-blown post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to assess the continuum theory using DM as an isolated symptom, and to examine trauma consequences in a exposed to traumatic events. METHODS: Using data from the National Epidemiologic Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions III, we assessed the prevalence of DM in a trauma exposed sample, and examined their sociodemographic and lifetime psychiatric correlates, comparing three groups: (i) controls

Neurological soft signs in homicidal men with antisocial personality disorder.

Neurological soft signs (NSS) are characterized by abnormalities in motor, sensory, and integrative functions. NSS have been regarded as a result of neurodevelopmental dysfunction, and as evidence of a central nervous system defect, resulting in considerable sociopsychological dysfunction. During the last decade there has been growing evidence of brain dysfunction in severe aggressive behavior. As a symptom, aggression overlaps a number of psychiatric disorders, but it is commonly associated with antisocial personality disorder. The aim of the present study was to examine NSS in an adult crimi

Risk of psychiatric disorders in patients with burn injury after rehabilitation therapies: a nationwide population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Burn injury (BI) is associated with substantial psychosocial burden and an increased risk of psychiatric disorders. However, the potential role of post-BI rehabilitation, particularly the association between physical and occupational therapies (PT/OT) and risk of psychiatric disorders, remains unclear. METHODS: Using data from the Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we conducted a nationwide, register-based retrospective cohort study. Patients with BI between 2000 and 2015 were identified and categorized according to receipt of PT/OT. A comparison cohort

Ethical dangers of facial phenotyping through photography in psychiatric genomics studies.

Psychiatric genomics research protocols are increasingly incorporating tools of deep phenotyping to observe and examine phenotypic abnormalities among individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. In particular, photography and the use of two-dimensional and three-dimensional facial analysis is thought to shed further light on the phenotypic expression of the genes underlying neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as provide potential diagnostic tools for clinicians. In this paper, I argue that the research use of photography to aid facial phenotyping raises deeply fraught issues from an ethic

Epidemiology of hallucinogen use in the U.S. results from the National epidemiologic survey on alcohol and related conditions III.

BACKGROUND: Population-based data regarding the epidemiology of hallucinogen use and co-occurring psychiatric disorders is largely absent from the literature. We aim to present findings on the prevalence, sociodemographic correlates, psychiatric comorbidity, treatment utilization, social support and associated disability of hallucinogen use using nationally representative data. METHOD: We analyzed data from the National Epidemiologic Study on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (2011-2012, N = 36,309). We conducted multivariate logistic regression analyses in unadjusted and adjusted models in
