Psychophysical observations indicate that the spatial profile of visuospatial attention includes a central enhancement around the attentional focus, encircled by a narrow zone of reduced excitability in the immediate surround. This inhibitory ring optimally amplifies relevant target information, likely stemming from top-down frontoparietal recurrent activity modulating early visual cortex activations. However, the mechanisms through which neural suppression gives rise to the surrounding attenuation and any potential hemispheric specialization remain unclear. We used transcranial magnetic stimu

OBJECTIVES: The mental parsing of linguistic hierarchy is crucial for language comprehension, and while there is growing interest in the cortical tracking of auditory speech, the neurophysiological substrates for tracking written language are still unclear.
METHODS: We recorded electroencephalographic (EEG) responses from participants exposed to auditory and visual streams of either random syllables or tri-syllabic real words. Using a frequency-tagging approach, we analyzed the neural representations of physically presented (i.e., syllables) and mentally constructed (i.e., words) linguistic u

Lifelong auditory and visual sensory deprivation have been demonstrated to alter both perceptual acuity and the neural processing of remaining senses. Recently, it was demonstrated that individuals with anosmia, i.e. complete olfactory sensory deprivation, displayed enhanced multisensory integration performance. Whether this ability is due to a reorganization of olfactory processing regions to focus on cross-modal multisensory information or whether it is due to enhanced processing within multisensory integration regions is not known. To dissociate these two outcomes, we investigated the neura

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the characteristics of visual processing in the auditory-associated cortex in adults with hearing loss using event-related potentials.
METHODS: Ten subjects with bilateral postlingual hearing loss were recruited. Ten age- and sex-matched normal-hearing subjects were included as controls. Visual ("sound" and "non-sound" photos)-evoked potentials were performed. The P170 response in the occipital area as well as N1 and N2 responses in FC3 and FC4 were analyzed.
RESULTS: Adults with hearing loss had higher P170 amplitudes, significantly higher N2 amplit

Cross-modal auditory influence on cell activity in the primary visual cortex emerging at short latencies raises the possibility that the first-order visual thalamic nucleus, which is considered dedicated to unimodal visual processing, could contribute to cross-modal sensory processing, as has been indicated in the auditory and somatosensory systems. To test this hypothesis, the effects of sound stimulation on visual cell activity in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus were examined in anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Visual responses evoked by light

It is controversial whether covariation between neuronal activity and perceptual choice (i.e., choice correlation) reflects the functional readout of sensory signals. Here, we combined choice-correlation measures and electrical microstimulation on a site-to-site basis in the medial superior temporal area (MST), middle temporal area (MT), and ventral intraparietal area (VIP) when macaques discriminated between motion directions in both fine and coarse tasks. Microstimulation generated comparable effects between tasks but heterogeneous effects across and within brain regions. Within the MST and

Sound is a sensory stimulant ubiquitously found throughout our environment. Humans have evolved a system that effectively and automatically converts sound sensory inputs into emotions. Although different emotional responses to sounds with different frequency characteristics are empirically recognized, there is a paucity of studies addressing different emotional responses to these sounds and the underlying neural mechanisms. In this study, we examined effects of pure tone (PT) and white noise (WN) inputs at ordinary loudness levels on emotional responses. We found that WN stimuli produced more

Instinctive defensive behaviors are essential for animal survival. Across the animal kingdom, there are sensory stimuli that innately represent threat and trigger stereotyped behaviors such as escape or freezing [1-4]. While innate behaviors are considered to be hard-wired stimulus-responses [5], they act within dynamic environments, and factors such as the properties of the threat [6-9] and its perceived intensity [1, 10, 11], access to food sources [12-14], and expectations from past experience [15, 16] have been shown to influence defensive behaviors, suggesting that their expression can be

Neuroimaging studies of aesthetic appreciation have shown that activity in the lateral occipital area (LO)-a key node in the object recognition pathway-is modulated by the extent to which visual artworks are liked or found beautiful. However, the available evidence is only correlational. Here we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate the putative causal role of LO in the aesthetic appreciation of paintings. In our first experiment, we found that interfering with LO activity during aesthetic appreciation selectively reduced evaluation of representational paintings, leaving

We investigate whether the loss of one eye leads to enhanced multisensory processing. Previously, we measured discrimination of auditory, visual and audiovisual targets in people with one eye compared to controls viewing binocularly or with one eye patched. Both control groups demonstrated typical visual dominance (the Colavita effect) whereas people with one eye show no Colavita effect, and instead show equal preference for visual and auditory stimuli. Here, we loaded temporal processing in an attempt to favour audition and thereby reverse Colavita visual dominance with a modified repetition

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the occipital pole can produce an illusory percept of a light flash (or 'phosphene'), suggesting an excitatory effect. Whereas previous reported effects produced by single-pulse occipital pole TMS are typically disruptive, here we report the first demonstration of a location-specific facilitatory effect on visual perception in humans. Observers performed a spatial cueing orientation discrimination task. An orientation target was presented in one of two peripheral placeholders. A single pulse below the phosphene threshold applied to the occipital pol

The role of sensory feedback in the control of movements was investigated in two deafferented patients with complete loss of cutaneous touch and movement/position sense below the neck and two control groups of different ages. In a synchronized repetitive finger-tapping task in time with a regular auditory pacing signal, the deafferented participants showed a strong influence of extrinsic feedback. In contrast to controls who demonstrated a typical asynchrony between their taps and the pacing signal in all feedback conditions, the deafferented participants, with auditory feedback and visual mon

Sensitivity to dynamic visual and auditory stimuli was assessed in dyslexic children (Grade 7) who at school entrance had suffered from the well-established double-deficit of impaired phonological sensitivity and deficient rapid naming performance. A visual magnocellular deficit was assessed by the coherent motion detection task of the Oxford group. An auditory magnocellular deficit was assessed by the illusory sound movement perception task of Hari and Kiesilä. On both tasks our dyslexic subjects' performance was similar or even better than the performance of normally reading controls. Differ

Enhancement of beta power in the spontaneous EEG under the influence of benzodiazepine medication is a well known phenomenon under waking conditions as well as during sleep. On the other hand, in certain frequency bands EEG activity following external stimulation is also enhanced. Therefore, the question arises what relationship exists between pre- and poststimulus EEG under the influence of benzodiazepines. Is an augmentation of beta activity during benzodiazepine medication further enhanced when external stimulation is applied? In order to address this question we compared the spectral power

This study explored the hypothesis that Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome involves a disturbance in arousal modulation. The experimental group consisted of 20 unmedicated subjects with the Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, and the control group of 20 subjects with chronic medical illnesses (haemophilia, von Willebrandt's disease and diabetes). There were differences between groups in the manner in which log conductance level changed over time during sound and light habituation experiments involving mild levels of stimulation with the Gilles de la Tourette group showing less change in arousal le

BACKGROUND: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is among the most prevalent forms of inherited generalized epilepsy in adolescents. It is characterized by photosensitivity and seizures triggered by photic stimulation. Previous magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies have demonstrated abnormal neural dynamics in JME; however, the ability of advanced electroencephalography (EEG) analysis to characterize these abnormalities remains unclear. This exploratory study investigated EEG-derived neurophysiological alterations in patients with JME and their potential relationship to photosensitivity.
