Association of Melatonin Production with Seasonal Changes, Low Temperature, and Immuno-Responses in Hamsters.

Seasonal changes impact the melatonin production and immuno-activities in vertebrates. This is believed due to the photoperiodic alterations of the different seasons which impact the functions of pineal gland. The short photoperiod promotes pineal melatonin production. As a result, during the winter, animals have significantly higher levels of melatonin than in summer. However, the seasonal changes also include temperature changes. This factor has never been systemically investigated in animals. In the current study, we observed that increased temperature had limited influence on melatonin pro…

Melatonin and the seasonal control of reproduction.

Many mammalian species from temperate latitudes exhibit seasonal variations in breeding activity which are controlled by the annual photoperiodic cycle. Photoperiodic information is conveyed through several neural relays from the retina to the pineal gland where the light signal is translated into a daily cycle of melatonin secretion: high at night, low in the day. The length of the nocturnal secretion of melatonin reflects the duration of the night and it regulates the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. Changes in GnRH release induce correspond…

The role of melatonin in the human fetus (review).

Melatonin, an indole amine, primarily derived from the pineal gland is secreted during the hours of darkness. Melatonin acts as a hormonal transduction of photoperiod influencing the timing of seasonal and daily (circadian) physiological rhythms. Maternal melatonin crosses the placenta and enters the fetal circulation providing photoperiodic information to the fetus influencing the subsequent circadian and seasonal rhythms of the offspring. The function of melatonin in humans is more obscure. However, melatonin has attained prominence as a treatment for disturbed circadian rhythms and sleep pa…

Pineal melatonin rhythms and the timing of puberty in mammals.

The direction of change in daylength provides the seasonal time cue for the timing of puberty in many mammalian species. The pattern of mela … ccur until the postnatal period, the rodent and ovine foetus has the ability to respond in utero to photoperiodic cues to which its mother is exposed in late gestation. Transplacental passage of maternal melatonin is likely to be the mechanism by which photoperiodic cues reach the foetus. Species which do not exhibit seasonal patterns of puberty, such as the …

Variables associated with peripartum traits in dairy cows. IX. Relationship of season and other factors to blood plasma concentrations of progesterone and the estrogens.

Least-squares associations of month, average daily temperature, photoperiod (h daylight/24 h) and other factors with plasma concentrations of hormones during the prepartum period were examined in 172 Holstein cows and heifers. The data were summarized and expressed as values for prepartum d 7, 4 and 1, which represented the means for d 8 to 6, 5 to 3, and 2 to 0. respectively. All animals calved during a period of 19 consecutive months. Across days, least-squares means for plasma hormones were 4.0 ng/ml for progesterone (P4), 232 pg/ml for estradiol-17 beta (E beta), 478 pg/ml for estradiol-17…

Effects of melatonin on thyroid physiology of female hamsters.

The effects of melatonin administration on thyroid physiology of female hamsters was investigated. A protocol of 25 micrograms given daily as subcutaneous injections late in the light period was found to inhibit blood levels of thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyrotropin (TSH). The free T4 index (FT4I) and the free T3 index (FT3I) were also significantly inhibited by melatonin injections. Decreasing the photoperiod under which the hamsters were kept, from 14 h light/10 h dark (14L/10D) to 10L/14D also resulted in decreased blood levels of these hormones. A protocol of melatonin inject…

Rewiring the SVP-AGL24 module into a flowering-promoting cascade via legume-specific E1 repressors in soybean.

Photoperiodic flowering is a critical determinant of soybean regional adaptation and yield, and is predominantly governed by the legume-specific E1 repressor family. How evolutionarily conserved MADS-box transcription regulators such as AGAMOUS-LIKE 24 (AGL24) and SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE (SVP) integrate into the E1 module remains unclear. Here, we show that soybean GmSVP1 and GmSVP2 promote flowering under long-day conditions. GmSVP1/2 directly bind to and repress the E1 family genes, and genetic analyses demonstrate that this repression accounts for the flowering-promoting activity of endogeno…

Prolactin (PRL) induction of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) expression and prostaglandin (PG) production in hamster Leydig cells.

Serum prolactin (PRL) variations play a crucial role in the photoperiodic-induced testicular regression-recrudescence transition in hamsters. We have previously shown that cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins (PGs), is expressed mostly in Leydig cells of reproductively active hamsters with considerable circulating and pituitary levels of PRL. In this study, we describe a stimulatory effect of PRL on COX2/PGs in hamster Leydig cells, which is mediated by IL-1β and prevented by P38-MAPK and JAK2 inhibitors. Furthermore, by preparative isoelectric focusing (…

Sex-specific responses to GnRH challenge, but not food supply, in kittiwakes: Evidence for the "sensitivity to information" hypothesis.

Seasonal timing of breeding is usually considered to be triggered by endogenous responses linked to predictive cues (e.g., photoperiod) and supplementary cues that vary annually (e.g., food supply), but social cues are also important. Females may be more sensitive to supplementary cues because of their greater role in reproductive timing decisions, while males may only require predictive cues. We tested this hypothesis by food-supplementing female and male colonial seabirds (black-legged kittiwakes, Rissa tridactyla) during the pre-breeding season. We measured colony attendance via GPS devices…

Melatonin entrainment of circannual rhythms.

A melatonin-based photoperiod timing mechanism and a circannual rhythm-generating system interact to govern seasonal cycles in physiology and behavior in many vertebrates. This paper focuses on the pars tuberalis (PT) of the mammalian pituitary gland as a model melatonin-responsive tissue to investigate the molecular basis of these two basic long-term timing processes.

The pigment-dispersing factor receptor (PDFR) gene is involved in circadian rhythm and moulting in Hyphantria cunea.

The pigment-dispersing factor neuropeptide receptor (PDFR) has a key role in establishing and maintaining the circadian rhythm, such as repr … ssues. Additionally, a significant rhythmic expression of HcPDFR was observed in the head under the photoperiod of 16L:8D and 12L:12D, while it showed no rhythmicity under 24L:0D. Melatonin acts at the suprachiasmatic nucleus to attenuate behavioral symptoms of infection.

In common with reproduction, immune function exhibits strong seasonal patterns, which are driven by annual changes in day length (photoperiod) and melatonin secretion. Whereas changes in melatonin communicate seasonal time into the reproductive axis via subcortical receptors, the relevant melatonin targets for communicating seasonal time into the immune system remain unspecified. The authors report that melatonin implants targeting the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) induced a winter phenotype in the immune system. SCN melatonin implants attenuated infection-induced anorexia and cach…

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) does not mediate the stimulatory action of norepinephrine on testosterone production by the testis of the golden hamster.

The role of cAMP in mediating the stimulatory effects of norepinephrine (NE) on testosterone (T) production by hamster testes in vitro was examined using tissue from both gonadally active and gonadally regressed hamsters. As expected from our previous studies, the NE-induced increase in T accumulation in this system was prevented by alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonist prazosin, but not by beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist propranolol. In incubations of regressed testes from short photoperiod-exposed hamsters, NE stimulated accumulation of cAMP in media and tissue. These effects were prevented by prop…

Functional development of the zebrafish pineal gland: light-induced expression of period2 is required for onset of the circadian clock.

In zebrafish, the pineal gland is a photoreceptive organ that contains an intrinsic circadian oscillator and exhibits rhythmic arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase (zfaanat2) mRNA expression. In the present study, we investigated the role of light and of a clock gene, zperiod2 (zper2), in the development of this rhythm. Analysis of zfaanat2 mRNA expression in the pineal gland of 3-day-old zebrafish embryos after exposure to different photoperiodic regimes indicated that light is required for proper development of the circadian clock-controlled rhythmic expression of zfaanat2, and that a 1-h ligh…

Neuroendocrine interactions and seasonality.

Sheep in temperate latitudes are seasonal breeders. Of the different seasonal cues, photoperiod is the most reliable parameter and is used by animals as an indication of the time of the year to synchronize endogenous annual rhythms of reproduction and physiology. The photoperiodic information is transduced into neuroendocrine changes through variations in melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Melatonin triggers variations in the secretion of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone (LHRH/LH/FSH) responsible for seasonal changes in reprodu…
