An in-season ecological program performed by soccer players changes pelvic kinematics during static, linear sprinting and sport-specific tasks: Implications for hamstring injuries.

An association has been reported between anterior pelvic tilt (APT) and hamstring injuries; however, no research has examined if an ecological training-based intervention could alter APT in soccer specific tasks. This study investigated the effects of a multicomponent intervention, combining lumbopelvic control exercises and running technique training, on pelvis structure during static, high-speed running (HSR), and high-speed soccer running (HSSR) tasks, and lower limb kinematics, in semi-professional soccer players over a 6-week in-season period. Seventeen players were randomly assigned to a

Training alters joint power distributions during running in National Football League Draft Preparation Players.

The aim of this study was to compare joint-specific contributions to total lower limb joint power during a speed run in American style football players before and after a 6-week National Football League (NFL) draft preparation camp. Fifty-two players performed one 5-second treadmill run at 5.5-6.5 m/s before and after camp. Speed was consistent between tests. Bilateral hip, knee, and ankle power generation (positive) and absorption (negative) were calculated from kinematics and kinetics using inverse dynamics. Negative total limb power decreased for both limbs, significantly for the left (Z =

Player Activity and Load Profiling with Hidden Markov Models: A Novel Application in Rugby League.

Player movement in rugby league is complex, being spatiotemporal and multifaceted. Modeling this complexity to provide robust measures of player activity and load has proved difficult, with important aspects of player movement yet to be considered. These include the influence of time-varying covariates on player activity and the combination of different dimensions of player movement. Few studies have simultaneously categorized player activity into different activity states and investigated factors influencing the transition between states, or compared player activity and load profiles between

Injury in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that can lead to injuries both in training and in competition. There is a paucity of data regarding injuries sustained while training in BJJ, in both competitive and noncompetitive jiu-jitsu athletes. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that most BJJ practitioners sustain injuries to various body locations while in training and in competition. Our primary objective was to describe injuries sustained while training for BJJ, both in practice and in competition. Our secondary objectives were to classify injury type and to explore part

Jérôme Lejeune (1926-1994): A Pioneer in Uncovering the Connection Between Congenital Conditions and Chromosomal Anomalies.

Jérôme Lejeune was a French physician and geneticist whose crucial contribution to the field of medicine was the discovery of an extra copy of chromosome 21 in those presenting with a range of physical and developmental anomalies known as Down syndrome. From this discovery on, the condition had a new name (trisomy 21) and a specific scientific explanation that left no room for discrimination against those affected and their parents. Lejeune promoted the idea that a medical doctor should hate the condition and love the patient: while working to find a cure for trisomy 21, Lejeune was also able

Benefits under the Sea: The Role of Marine Compounds in Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Marine habitats offer a rich reservoir of new bioactive compounds with great pharmaceutical potential; the variety of these molecules is unique, and its production is favored by the chemical and physical conditions of the sea. It is known that marine organisms can synthesize bioactive molecules to survive from atypical environmental conditions, such as oxidative stress, photodynamic damage, and extreme temperature. Recent evidence proposed a beneficial role of these compounds for human health. In particular, xanthines, bryostatin, and 11-dehydrosinulariolide displayed encouraging neuroprotecti

Cutaneous manifestations of child abuse.

Dermatologists and child abuse are not frequently associated in the minds of most physicians. Yet the most common manifestations of child abuse are cutaneous. This article reviews cutaneous manifestations of physical abuse, including bruises, lacerations, abrasions, human bites, and burns. It also discusses ways that dermatologists can differentiate abusive injuries from accidental ones as well as from the many dermatologic conditions that can mimic child abuse. Finally, we review what actions the dermatologist should take when suspecting abuse in a patient.

[Novel brain stimulation techniques: therapeutic perspectives in psychiatry].

Recent advances have allowed the development of new physical techniques in neurology and psychiatry, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). These techniques are already recognized as therapeutic approaches in several late stage refractory neurological disorders (Parkinson's disease, tremor, epilepsy), and currently investigated in psychiatric conditions, refractory to medical treatment (obsessive-compulsive disorder, resistant major depression). In Paralell, these new techniques offer a new window to understand the neur

An online survey of encouragement strategies for older adults' daily worries: a conversational robot versus a human partner.

Conversational robots are increasingly proposed to provide everyday emotional support for older adults. However, it remains unclear which encouragement strategies are perceived as effective and whether interpersonal strategy preferences transfer to Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). This study compared the perceived effectiveness of five encouragement strategies when delivered by a conversational robot versus a human partner, examined moderation by worry type, and explored associations with recipients' emotional states. Japanese young-old adults aged 65-74 (final N = 55) completed an online scenar

A sense of losing one's hand induced by visuotactile conflict in virtual reality.

Embodiment of external objects has been widely studied to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of human body perception, whereas disembodiment has received only limited attention despite its importance. To address this gap, we designed a sensorimotor feedback paradigm using virtual reality to induce bodily disappearance, referred to here as the sense of body loss. Participants wearing a head-mounted display moved a virtual right hand-synchronized with their real right hand-to repeatedly touch the index finger of a virtual left hand. Two factors were manipulated during the experiment: spatial co

Chronic Polyhydramnios: A Medical Entity Which Could Be a Model of Muscle Development in Decreased Mechanical Loading Condition.

Polyhydramnios is a condition related to an excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid in the third trimester of pregnancy and it can be acute and chronic depending on the duration. Published data suggest that during muscle development, in the stage of late histochemical differentiation decreased mechanical loading cause decreased expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) type 1 leading to slow-to-fast transition. In the case of chronic polyhydramnios, histochemical muscle differentiation could be affected as a consequence of permanent decreased physical loading. Most affected would be muscles whic
