Subjective memory complaints in people with epilepsy: Are there "signature" complaints associated with anxiety and depression?

OBJECTIVE: While there is a relatively weak association between cognitive complaints and performance on standardized tests of memory function, elevated levels of depression and anxiety are highly correlated with subjective memory complaints in people with epilepsy (PWE). The study examined whether there are "signature" constellations of memory complaints that are associated with anxiety and depression in PWE. If identified, these signatures may alert clinicians to the likelihood of mood playing a role when presented with these complaints in the neurology clinic. METHODS: Three hundred and sev

Allogeneic bone paste versus bone powder for oral guided bone regeneration: A randomized, noninferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: There is demand for new biomaterials that reduce the morbidity associated with a second graft site needed for autologous bone grafting and facilitate the surgical procedure. Here we compared bone volume gain using a supercritical CO2-processed allogeneic bone paste and bone powder in partially edentulous patients requiring bone augmentation of alveolar ridges by guided bone regeneration (GBR) to place one or more implants. METHODS: Eighty-six patients with bone defects requiring horizontal and/or vertical bone augmentation were randomly assigned to receive allogeneic bone paste or

How to report neurotechnology and artificial intelligence studies in epilepsy: Peer-review-inspired recommendations.

OBJECTIVE: The integration of neurotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI) in epilepsy research has led to significant advancements in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. However, the impact of these innovations is often diminished by inadequate and inaccurate reporting, limiting their reproducibility and implementation. This study aimed to identify common peer review concerns and develop reporting recommendations specific to neurotechnology and AI studies in epilepsy. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative analysis of peer review comments from original research article submissions to Epil

Taurine levels in periodontitis: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. It is closely associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Taurine, a semi-essential amino acid recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has not been extensively investigated in the context of periodontitis. This pilot study sought to evaluate the levels of taurine and inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of individuals with p

Association between periodontitis and prostate cancer: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that chronic inflammation may play a role in the development and clinical course of cancer. In this context, periodontitis (PE) has been associated with prostate cancer (PC), but the results are still inconsistent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential association between PE and PC, and their shared risk factors. METHODS: This case-control study comprised 152 cases with PC and 220 controls. All participants underwent a complete periodontal examination, and sociodemographic and medical variables of interest were collected. The assoc

Associations Between a Genetic Liability Toward Externalizing and Behavioral Outcomes Spanning Toddlerhood Through Early Adulthood in Five Developmental Cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding how genetic risk unfolds across development will be important for using genetics to inform prevention and early intervention. The current study leverages information from 5 large datasets to characterize behavioral manifestations of a genetic liability toward externalizing from ages 6 months to 26 years. METHOD: We used polygenic scores (PGS) derived from a multivariate genome-wide association study (GWAS) of externalizing that identified hundreds of significantly associated genetic variants (EXTPGS) to estimate associations of genetic liability with relevant phenotyp

Non-synaptic interictal epileptiform discharges propagating from CA3 to CA1 induce synaptic depression in the hippocampus.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with epilepsy contend with memory impairment associated with the prevalence of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). IEDs can propagate without synaptic transmission in both in vivo and in vitro rodent hippocampi. We focused our investigation on the effects of these non-synaptically propagating IEDs on synaptic plasticity. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that such IEDs generate long-term depression. METHODS: IEDs were induced in mouse longitudinal hippocampal slices (i.e., cut along the septotemporal axis of the hippocampus) using 4-aminopyridine (4-AP). Change

Retro molar papilla pedunculated flap: A retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce a new flap design to improve keratinized tissue (KT) around implants in the posterior mandible, avoiding the need for harvesting tissue from the palate, which is associated with significant discomfort for patients. METHODS: Eleven patients requiring implants in the molar regions with a KT width (KTW) < 2 mm at the buccal aspect were treated using this surgical technique. Outcomes, including the increase in KT width and postoperative discomfort, were measured at intervals of 1, 4, and 10 months. RESULTS: An average increase of 4.2

Biologically-oriented alveolar ridge preservation to correct bone dehiscence at immediate implant placement.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present case study is to describe the application of a modification of the Biologically-oriented Alveolar Ridge Preservation (BARP) principles in cases of peri-implant bone dehiscence (PIBD) due to a compromised alveolus at immediate implant placement (IIP). METHODS: The technique is based on the stratification of three layers: a deep layer with a collagen sponge (CS) in the apical part of the alveolus (where the buccal bone plate was still present) to support the blood clot; a graft layer to correct the PIBD; and a superficial collagen layer to cover the graft

Tooth loss trajectories and their association with frailty risk: A 10-year population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies concerning tooth loss and frailty risk primarily employed the number of teeth to categorize the extent of tooth loss. However, tooth loss is a dynamic process. Hence, this study aimed to identify the dynamic trajectories of tooth loss and analyze the relationship between tooth loss trajectories and frailty risk. METHODS: This analysis included 3355 participants enrolled in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The number of teeth and the frailty index were evaluated in 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018, and the tooth loss trajectories were establishe

MRI evidence for material-specific encoding deficits and mesial-temporal alterations in presurgical frontal lobe epilepsy patients.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging studies reveal frontal lobe (FL) contributions to memory encoding. Accordingly, memory impairments are documented in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Still, little is known about the structural or functional correlates of such impairments. Particularly, material specificity of functional changes in cerebral activity during memory encoding in FLE is unclear. METHODS: We compared 24 FLE patients (15 right-sided) undergoing presurgical evaluation with 30 healthy controls on a memory fMRI-paradigm of learning scenes, faces, and words followed by an out-of-scanner recognition t

Surgical management of status epilepticus: A systematic review.

Status Epilepticus (SE), unresponsive to medical management, is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Surgical management is typically considered in these refractory cases. The best surgical approach for affected patients remains unclear; however, given the lack of controlled trials exploring the role of surgery. We performed a systematic review according to PRIMSA guidelines, including case reports and series describing surgical interventions for patients in SE. Cases (157 patients, median age 12.9 years) were followed for a median of 12 months. Patients were in SE for a median of 21
