Pain symptoms caused by bone lesions of multiple myeloma can be relieved by a local irradiation treatment. To estimate the influence of systemic treatment on the palliative effect of local radiotherapy the records of 70 myeloma patients treated with chemotherapy combined with or followed by local irradiation were reviewed. Therapy of neurocysticercosis with cysticidal drugs is frequently complicated by the exacerbation of symptoms that follows the inflammation triggered by the acute destruction of cysticerci. Plasma cortisol levels were estimated in twenty two culture positive cases of enteric fever and in equal number of patients with fever due to non-enteric causes. The authors studied 36 acutely psychotic inpatients who were diagnosed as having either a schizophrenic (N = 30) or other psychotic (N = 6) disorder. After a washout phase averaging 18 days, all patients were placed on trifluoperazine 5 mg orally twice a day. Plasma levels of trifluoperazine were obtained on days 11 and 15 of treatment and then compared with clinical response. After 2 weeks of treatment an inverted U-shaped relationship was found between change scores on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and trifluoperazine plasma levels.

Karyotypic abnormalities were studied in multiple myeloma and were correlated with clinical features. Among 115 evaluable patients, 46% had an abnormal karyotype. Trisomy 3, 5, 9, and 15 and monosomy 13 and 16 were the most common clonal abnormalities. Translocations described previously in other B cell malignancies occurred in nine patients, including four with t(8;14)(q24;q32) translocations. Immunoturbidimetric assay technique was used to determine plasma fibronectin concentration in healthy Nigerian children (age 2-14 years), patients with sickle cell disease in steady state and patients with sickle cell disease in crises.
