Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an evolving biofabrication approach in regenerative medicine with the potential to overcome many limitations of conventional reconstructive techniques, including donor-site morbidity, limited tissue availability, and suboptimal restoration of form and function. Recent advances in biofabrication have accelerated the development of patient-specific living constructs for reconstructive applications. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on the use of 3D bioprinting in reconstructive surgery, emphasizing developments most relevant to plastic

Goals in plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine include minimizing healing complications, optimize aesthetic outcomes and improve patient satisfaction. Platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) is among the most potent natural activators of healing. A pharmaceutical copy of natural PDGF-BB, (rhPDGF-BB or pure PDGF) is the active ingredient in four US Food and Drug Administration-approved therapies to stimulate healing of skin, mucosa, gingivae or bone. Here we describe the mechanism of action and clinical uses of off-the-shelf pure PDGF in plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine as a post-tre

This article uses the author's experience of researching historical photographs of facial injury and surgical reconstruction to think through the ethics of writing about and publishing images of patients anonymised by excising or covering their eyes. This article specifically highlights tensions between the British Medical Journal's guidelines for patient anonymity in imagery and those of the archives of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. The rules for reproducing these sensitive images are not standardised across disciplines nor across journals and medi

Global disparities in surgical access remain a major health challenge, with an estimated 5 billion people lacking safe and affordable care. Plastic and reconstructive surgery plays a key role in addressing this gap, particularly through the management of trauma, burns, and congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate. Although nonprofit organizations and surgical mission trips have delivered high procedure volumes, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to face substantial unmet need. Concerns over sustainability, long-term outcomes, and reliance on foreign teams highlight the

BACKGROUND: Medical and surgical tourism is a rapidly growing phenomenon in post-pandemic Europe. The exodus of patients abroad to perform surgery, especially cosmetic treatments, is spreading recently in industrialized countries. In the social media era, the ease of access to advertising about surgical procedures and their costs favors traveling. However, the information given is not always punctual, and there is often a lack of patient awareness about the risks related to the procedures.
METHODS: The objective of the manuscript is to investigate, through clinical examples, the path that a p

The authors discuss the incidence, the embryological development, the classification, the presentation and the treatment options of this rare reproductive tract abnormality. In the past, the treatment proposed almost unanimously was hysterectomy and subsequent construction, when necessary, of a neovagina. In recent decades, numerous experiences of conservative therapies have accumulated that allow the restoration of menstrual function and in some rare cases even the achievement of a pregnancy. However, complications associated with recanalization of the cervix frequently resulted in the need f

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) encompasses the evaluation and application of best available evidence, incorporation of clinical experience, and emphasis on patient preference and values. Different scales are used to rate levels of evidence. Translating available data for interventions to clinical practice guidelines requires an assessment of both the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendation. Essential to the practice of EBM is evaluating the effectiveness of an intervention through outcome measures. This article discusses principles essential to EBM, resources commonly used in EBM

Ophthalmic plastic or oculoplastic surgery is the current term for the surgical treatment of disorders of the eyelid, the lacrimal apparatus and the orbit. The most frequent causes are congenital malformations, malpositions, abnormal motility, tumors and injuries. A good functional result with the best possible appearance is the goal; cosmetic surgery is performed only when the underlying cause is a malformation or disease. Several specialties have qualifications relevant to this field or parts of it; this article describes the tasks of an ophthalmologist working in this field and what he can

Robot-assisted ureteral reconstructive surgery (RAURS) has become an increasingly important approach for ureteral stricture disease, ureteral injury, ureteral reimplantation, ureteroplasty, and other complex reconstructive scenarios. However, the global publication profile, knowledge structure, and developmental trajectory of RAURS remain insufficiently characterised from a bibliometric perspective. This study aimed to delineate publication patterns, scholarly output, collaboration networks, co-citation-based knowledge domains, and emerging research interests in RAURS. RAURS-related records we
