Association between introduction of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and burden of hospitalized adult pneumococcal disease in Taiwan - a retrospective database study.

This study estimated the incidence rate (IR), case fatality rate (CFR), healthcare resource utilization, and costs of pneumococcal disease before and after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) into Taiwan's childhood immunization programme (CIP) in 2015. Adults aged ≥18 years hospitalized with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumonia from 2011 to 2019 were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Baseline and trend of IRs were compared between pre-introduction (2011-2014) and post-introduction (2016-2019) of PCV13 usin

Pneumococcal vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and practices among surveyed U.S. adults aged 19-64 years at increased risk for pneumococcal disease.

Pneumococcal disease contributes to significant morbidity in the United States. Before October 2024, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended pneumococcal vaccination for risk-eligible adults aged 19-64 years; however, as of 2023, vaccination coverage remained low (33.1 %). To understand factors associated with low vaccination coverage, in January 2024, a web-based survey was conducted among risk-eligible adults aged 19-64 years examining their knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward pneumococcal vaccination. Of 1533 eligible participants, 39.2 % self-reported having rec

Impact of national introduction of ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease in Bangladesh: Case-control and time-trend studies.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh introduced the ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) into its national immunization program in March 2015 creating an opportunity to assess the real-world impact of PCV on invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). METHODS: Between January 2014 and June 2018, children aged 3-35 months in three rural sub-districts of Sylhet district of Bangladesh were visited every two months to collect morbidity and care-seeking data. Children attending sub-district hospitals with pneumonia, meningitis, or sepsis were assessed for IPD after obtaining informed consent. Blood and ce

Impact and effectiveness of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease among children under 5 years of age in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In 2011, the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was replaced by the 10-valent vaccine (PCV10) in the Netherlands. We report on impact and effectiveness against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children aged under 5 years by switching from PCV7 to PCV10. METHOD: We included IPD cases between 2004 and 2019 in children aged < 5 years reported via the national surveillance system. To assess the impact of the PCV10 vaccination program we compared IPD incidence 6-8 years after PCV10 introduction (2017-2019) to the two years just before the switch to PCV10 (2009-2011).

Pneumococcal bacteremia in febrile infants presenting to the emergency department 8 years after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the Basque Country of Spain.

We included 3088 well-appearing infants aged between 3 and 36 months with fever without a source with a blood culture done as part of their study of fever. Rate of positive blood cultures for Streptococcus pneumoniae occult bacteremia (OB) was 0.58%. Rate of OB caused by PCV7-serotypes and nonvaccine serotypes were 0.16% and 0.42%, respectively. A total of 18 cases of S. pneumoniae OB were identified between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2009. None of the 5 infants who had S. pneumoniae OB caused by vaccine serotypes had received PCV7. The decline in pneumococcal OB rates observed after PCV

Age-stratified prevalences of pneumococcal-serotype-specific immunoglobulin G in England and their relationship to the serotype-specific incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease prior to the introduction of the pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine.

Recent changes to the childhood immunization schedule in the United Kingdom have resulted in the inclusion of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. However, the seroprevalence of pneumococcal antibodies in the population was unknown. To address this, we measured pneumococcal, age-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations specific for nine serotypes by an assay run on the Bioplex platform, using 2,664 serum samples collected in England from 2000 to 2004. The lowest concentrations of IgG specific to all serotypes and the proportions of serotype-specific IgG concentrations of >/=0.35

Immunogenicity of the 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugated Vaccine Followed by the 23-Valent Polysaccharide Vaccine in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.

Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) have a 29- to 36-fold increased risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) compared to healthy adults. Therefore, most guidelines recommend vaccination with the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugated vaccine (PCV13) followed 2 months later by the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). Because both CLL as well as immunosuppressive treatment have been identified as major determinants of immunogenicity, we aimed to assess the vaccination schedule in untreated and treated CLL patients. We quantified pneumococcal IgG concentrations against five serot

Vaccination as primary prevention? The effect of anti-pneumococcal vaccination on the outcome of patients suffering traumatic skull base fractures.

BACKGROUND: As many as 360,000 people suffer yearly from skull base fractures (SBF). These may be associated with a dural tear, hemosinus, otorrhea or rhinorrhea. The most common causative agent of post-traumatic meningitis is Streptococcus Pneumonia (Pneumococcus). PNEUMOVAX 23 is a potent vaccine against Pneumococcus, but head trauma involving any skull fractures are not defined indications for its use. Our aim was to identify the effect of PNEUMOVAX on the natural course and incidence of infections and infectious prognosis following SBF. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients sufferin

Otitis media in children vaccinated during consecutive 7-valent or 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccination schedules.

BACKGROUND: In 2001 when 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was introduced, almost all (90%) young Australian Indigenous children living in remote communities had some form of otitis media (OM), including 24% with tympanic membrane perforation (TMP). In late 2009, the Northern Territory childhood vaccination schedule replaced PCV7 with 10-valent pneumococcal Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV10). METHODS: We conducted regular surveillance of all forms of OM in children in remote Indigenous communities between September 2008 and December 2012. This analysis

Evaluation of pneumococcal vaccination rates after vaccine protocol changes and nurse education in a tertiary care teaching hospital.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal vaccination in eligible patients is recommended by the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Because hospitalization provides an opportunity to vaccinate patients at high risk for developing serious pneumonia complications, eligibility screening and administration of the pneumococcal vaccine prior to discharge in qualified patients are evaluated by the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of pneumococcal vaccination core quality measures. Cost effectiveness of adding 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate (PCV-7) vaccine to the Norwegian childhood vaccination program.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a frequent bacterial cause of serious infections that may cause permanent sequelae and death. A 7-valent conjugate vaccine may reduce the incidence of pneumococcal disease, but some previous studies have questioned the cost-effectiveness of the vaccine. The aim of this study was to estimate costs and health consequences of adding this pneumococcal vaccine to the Norwegian childhood vaccination programme, taking the possibility of herd immunity into account. METHODS: We developed a simulation model (Markov-model) using data on the risk of pneumococcal di

Assessing the potential impact of the 20-valent (PCV20) and an adult 21-valent (aPCV21) pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease in England.

BACKGROUND: Several higher-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have been licensed recently, including a 20-valent PCV (PCV20) for children and adults and 21-valent PCV (aPCV21) licensed for adults. We assessed the potential for aPCV21 to further reduce the burden of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in England. METHODS: IPD cases are electronically reported to the UKHSA and pneumococcal isolates are routinely submitted to the UKHSA national reference laboratory for confirmation and serotyping. We used national enhanced surveillance data for all IPD cases confirmed in England (July

Effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on pneumococcal carriage in hospitalised children aged 2-59 months in Mongolia: an active pneumonia surveillance programme.

BACKGROUND: Data on changes in pneumococcal serotypes in hospitalised children following the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in low-income and middle-income countries are scarce. In 2016, Mongolia introduced the 13-valent PCV (PCV13) into the national immunisation programme. We aimed to describe the trend and impact of PCV13 introduction on pneumococcal carriage in hospitalised children aged 2-59 months with pneumonia in Mongolia over a 6-year period. Rising Pneumococcal Antibiotic Resistance in the Post-13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Era in Pediatric Isolates From a Primary Care Setting.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae strains may cause infections that fail to respond to antimicrobial therapy. Results reported from hospitalized patients with invasive, bacteremic infections may not be the same as those observed in a primary care setting where young children receive care for noninvasive infections. Young children experience the highest burden of pneumococcal disease.
